For most gouramis, a practical general target is 75–80°F (about 24–27°C), the range recommended by Aqueon. Other broad care guides allow a wider span: OATA lists 20–28°C (68–82°F) for gouramis and paradise fish. These are group-level recommendations, not a single exact optimum for every gourami species.
Recommended temperature ranges for gouramis
Care guides differ because they give broad advice for groups of fish rather than a species-specific temperature prescription. Use the range that applies to your fish and prioritize a stable aquarium temperature.

These recommendations do not come from a controlled comparison establishing one exact best temperature. For a common gourami, Aqueon’s narrower 75–80°F range is a useful starting point; the wider OATA and Petco ranges show that general guidance varies.
Why your gourami’s species matters
“Grammy fish” is likely a misspelling of “gourami fish,” not a separate species. Gourami is a broad common name covering multiple types, and a general care sheet cannot establish the ideal conditions for each one. Identify your fish as specifically as possible. If it is an uncommon, specialist, or wild-caught fish, seek care guidance for that particular type rather than assuming the broad group range is exact.

Keep the aquarium temperature steady
A suitable reading matters, but avoidable swings can make conditions less consistent. OATA recommends a heater to maintain a suitable temperature throughout the year and advises keeping the aquarium away from drafts and heat sources to minimize fluctuations. Aqueon recommends a heater when the room is below 75°F.
- Check the aquarium temperature rather than relying only on the room temperature.
- Place the tank away from drafts and direct heat sources, which can contribute to fluctuations.
- Use a heater if needed to maintain the appropriate range consistently; choose its capacity based on tank volume and room conditions.
- Monitor the water so you can spot changes instead of assuming the heater is maintaining the set temperature.
OATA’s care sheet calls for temperature monitoring but does not specify a standalone thermometer. A thermometer can help you check the aquarium water directly.
