Pike usually refers to the northern pike (Esox lucius), a freshwater fish native to the Northern Hemisphere. Its natural range spans northern North America, Europe and Asia, including Alaska, Canada, the Great Lakes, the Mississippi River basin and Siberia. Pike favor cool, vegetated water—especially lake margins, quiet river pools, sluggish streams and backwaters—but their exact location changes with the season.
Where northern pike live around the world
Northern pike have a holarctic distribution, meaning they occur across high-latitude parts of North America, Europe and Asia. They are freshwater fish; the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service notes that they can occur in water as deep as 100 feet.

A pike reported outside these broad native areas may be a stocked or nonindigenous population. Local wildlife records are the best way to determine whether a particular water is within the native range or reflects an introduction.
What habitat do pike prefer?
Pike are cool-water fish that combine cover with access to open water. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service describes them in “clear, vegetated lakes, quiet pools and the backwaters of creeks and small to large rivers, lakes and reservoirs.”

Vegetated lake margins
Shallow, plant-filled shorelines provide cover for young pike and places for adults to ambush prey. Larger fish often hold along the outside edge of the vegetation, where deeper water meets the weed line.
Rivers, streams and backwaters
In flowing systems, pike commonly use sluggish streams, quiet pools, oxbows and river backwaters rather than the fastest current. Connected wetlands and flooded margins can also provide important seasonal habitat.

Deeper water
Although many pike are associated with shallow weeds, adults can move into deeper parts of lakes, reservoirs and river pools after spawning or when conditions change. Depth alone does not identify pike water; the combination of cool conditions, cover and nearby prey is more informative.
Are pike found in lakes or rivers?
They are found in both. Lakes and reservoirs offer vegetated bays, shorelines and deeper edges. Rivers provide suitable habitat in slow channels, backwaters, tributary mouths and protected pools. A waterway is most likely to hold pike where these features occur together, especially where aquatic vegetation borders a drop into deeper water.

Where pike go to spawn
When ice breaks up in late winter or spring, adults move into very shallow water. Spawning sites include flooded wetlands, vegetated lake margins and shallow tributary streams. Pike scatter their eggs over aquatic plants and other submerged cover rather than building a nest.
After spawning, adults generally leave these shallow areas and return toward deeper edges, pools, lakes or backwaters. This seasonal movement is why a lake can produce pike in weeds during spring but along deeper vegetation lines later in the year.

Where can you catch pike?
For anglers, the most useful starting points are legal waters with a confirmed pike population and visible habitat such as weed beds, reed lines, quiet bays, tributary mouths and slow backwaters. Smaller pike tend to remain within dense vegetation; larger fish often position just outside it or near a nearby depth change.
Local regulations determine open seasons, size limits, possession limits and permitted bait. Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources identifies live fish bait and wobbling spoons among pike-angling methods, but the appropriate tackle and rules vary by water.

Why local status matters
Northern pike have been stocked or recorded as nonindigenous in several U.S. states. California is a specific example: the California Department of Fish and Wildlife states that northern pike are not currently found there after eradication efforts. Therefore, a map or catch report should be checked against the current state or provincial wildlife agency rather than treated as proof that pike are established everywhere nearby.
