Spider webs come from silk that the spider makes inside its body. Silk glands produce a protein-based material, which leaves through structures called spinnerets on the abdomen. The spider draws the silk into threads and arranges those threads into a web or another silk structure.
How a spider turns silk into a web
- Silk is produced internally. Glands in the spider’s abdomen make silk as a protein-based material. It is liquid inside the spider rather than a ready-made thread.
- Silk leaves through spinnerets. Spinnerets are usually on the rear underside of the abdomen. Tiny openings called spigots at their ends release the silk.
- The spider draws out the thread. Gravity or a hind leg can help pull the liquid silk into a solid filament as it leaves the spinnerets.
- The spider arranges the threads. Legs and body movements place strands into the pattern suited to that species. There is no single construction sequence that applies to every kind of web.
Why webs look different
Web design reflects the spider’s species, habitat and hunting strategy. Some spiders make familiar orb webs with radiating supports and spiral capture threads. Others build sheets, tangles, funnels or three-dimensional structures. The threads can differ in thickness, strength and other properties because silk is produced for different jobs.

Not every strand is sticky. A web may include structural lines, signal lines and capture lines, and those silk types do not all have the same function or surface.
What spiders use silk for besides prey-catching webs
- Safety lines and draglines: A spider can leave a continuous line while moving, escaping or dropping from a surface.
- Egg cases: Silk protects eggs and helps hold them together.
- Retreats and shelters: Some spiders line hiding places or build silken tubes and retreats.
- Prey snares: A web can intercept prey, restrain it or provide a surface from which the spider can detect movement.
Some spiders make silk but hunt actively instead of building a web to catch food. Web building and silk production are therefore related, but they are not the same behavior.

Do all spiders make webs to catch prey?
No. The Natural History Museum states that fewer than half of Britain’s 37 spider families make webs to catch prey. That is a Britain-specific comparison of spider families, not a worldwide percentage and not a claim that fewer than half of all individual spiders build webs.
#1 Best Overall
Many web-building species still spend time away from a capture web, while other species rely mainly on ambush, pursuit or other active hunting methods.
Is a spider web made from material gathered outside?
No. The spider manufactures the silk in its own silk glands and extrudes it through its spinnerets. Dust, pollen and other particles may later collect on an abandoned web, but they are not the source of the web’s threads.
What is a spider web made of?
It is made of spider silk: protein-based fibers produced by the spider. “Spider web” usually means a silk structure used for prey capture, but the same animal-produced material can also form egg cases, safety lines, shelters and retreats. Different silk types give those structures different physical properties and functions.

Web versus silk: the useful distinction
Spider silk is the material. A web is one arrangement of that material. A spider can produce silk without making a prey-catching web, and a single web can contain several kinds of silk threads. This distinction explains why finding silk does not necessarily mean that a spider is waiting in a conventional web.
