Big Bend National Park is temporarily closing selected trails, roads and campsites in early October 2026 so National Park Service and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department crews can conduct helicopter operations to control non-native Barbary sheep, also called aoudad. The effort is intended to protect the park’s native desert bighorn sheep. The closures are safety measures for the aerial work, not a park-wide shutdown.
Why are Big Bend trails and roads closing?
The National Park Service says the closures will make the areas safe for helicopter operations targeting aoudad. The agency describes the work as part of its long-term effort to manage invasive species under the Exotic Animal Management Plan and Environmental Assessment finalized in June 2018. Barbary sheep are native to the dry mountains of Northern Africa. The NPS says they have adapted to West Texas over roughly 30 years and now number in the hundreds. They share habitat with Big Bend’s small native desert-bighorn population; the agency identifies competition for food and water, risks to biodiversity and effects on visitors’ experience of natural scenery among the concerns.

The NPS says each survey-area closure is expected to last one full day, but weather or mechanical delays may extend it. The Houston Chronicle also reports that Persimmon Gap remains open and that recreation north of Boquillas Canyon Road, including Marufo Vega and Ore Terminals, is affected by the broader closure. Check the park’s latest announcement before setting out, since access may change.

Is Mesa de Anguila open? Can I hike Santa Elena or Boquillas Canyon?
Mesa de Anguila is scheduled to close starting October 1, with access restrictions beginning the prior evening. The NPS says Santa Elena Canyon Trail remains open during that operation. For the October 2 work around Deadhorse Mountains, the Boquillas Canyon Trail remains open. These are area-specific exceptions, not a guarantee that every route or approach will be accessible; verify current alerts before driving or hiking.
How long will the aoudad closures last?
Plan for a full day of closure in each survey area. The NPS warns that the schedule can run longer if weather or mechanical problems delay helicopter operations. Evening-before restrictions mean visitors should not assume they can enter a closure area late the previous day.

Check for other road closures before driving
The October aerial-work closures are separate from weather-related road closures. The NPS conditions page, last updated September 23, 2026, listed closures on the paved road between Cottonwood Campground and Santa Elena Canyon, Hot Springs Road and Black Gap Road. Conditions can change, so consult Big Bend’s current conditions page before travel. The park advises using appropriate four-wheel-drive vehicles on primitive roads.
Big Bend’s management challenges include water concerns, endangered species and exotic-species invasions. The aoudad operation reflects the park’s need to balance visitor access with protection of rare and fragile ecosystems.
