The pollen “pockets” you see on some bees are baskets on their hind legs that carry pollen back to the nest or colony. Their scientific name is corbiculae. They are not hollow bags, and not all bees have them: some carry pollen in specialized hairs instead.
What is a bee’s pollen pocket?
A pollen basket, or corbicula, is a modified area on the hind-leg tibia—the segment below the knee-like joint. Its shallow, concave surface and surrounding hairs help hold a load of pollen. The basket is an external structure, not a pocket through the leg. It can also carry propolis, a resinous material bees collect, according to Michigan State University’s honey bee anatomy guide.
How does a bee pack pollen into it?
A honey bee grooms pollen from its body and directs it toward the hind legs. Just below the basket is a pollen press: as the leg joint moves, it presses the loose grains into a denser mass that can be carried in the corbicula. The visible clump on a returning bee’s leg is therefore compacted pollen cargo, not pollen sitting in a hollow pouch. The University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture Extension describes this packing mechanism.
Why do bees carry pollen home?
Pollen is food for the colony. Honey bee workers condition the pollen they bring back with glandular secretions and microbes; stored, conditioned pollen is often called bee bread. The University of Florida IFAS Extension gives an estimated annual pollen requirement of 15–55 kg for a honey bee colony. That is an estimate, not a fixed requirement for every colony.

Do all bees have pollen baskets?
No. Honey bees and bumble bees carry pollen in corbiculae, while many other bee species use pollen-collecting hairs, called scopae, on the legs or other body areas, including beneath the abdomen. The exact carrying structure and location vary among bees; it is not accurate to assume every bee has the same kind of basket.
| Bee group or carrying method | Structure and location | How it carries pollen |
|---|---|---|
| Honey bees and bumble bees | Corbicula on the hind-leg tibia | Compacted pollen is carried in the basket. |
| Many other bee species | Pollen-collecting hairs (scopae) on the legs or other body areas | Pollen is held among specialized hairs rather than in a corbicula. |
Penn State Extension describes these broad differences. The way pollen packs can matter, too: the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources notes that some stringy primrose pollen is difficult for honey bees to pack into corbiculae, while some native bees can carry it among sparse hairs.
