Cats make noises to communicate with people and other animals, express needs or emotional states, and respond to situations such as mating, fear, or pain. A sound is a clue, not a fixed translation: consider what is happening, your cat’s body language, and what is normal for that cat. If vocalizing changes suddenly or becomes persistent, contact a veterinarian.

What common cat noises may mean

Sound Possible context How to read it
Meow Greeting, attention, play, food, access, or a request for help The same cat may use different meows for different purposes. Notice the situation and what happens next.
Purr May accompany contentment, attention-seeking, stress, or illness A purr alone does not establish that a cat is happy or healthy.
Yowl or howl Mating behavior, distress, or a need for attention Sound alone cannot identify the cause, especially if the pattern is new or persistent.
Hiss Fear, defensive warning, or discomfort Give the cat space. Pain can also contribute to defensive behavior.
Growl Warning or threat-related behavior Consider the surroundings and body posture; do not try to handle a distressed cat.

Why do cats meow?

Adult cats often direct meows at people. They may be greeting someone, asking for attention or play, requesting food, asking to be let in or out, or signaling that something is wrong. Kittens also meow to their mothers. Adult cats may yowl to one another during breeding season. The ASPCA describes meowing as normal communication behavior and notes that its purpose depends on the circumstances.

Older cats experiencing confusion may meow, and illness can also lead to unusually frequent vocalizing. Rather than treating every meow as a request for food or attention, note when it happens and whether anything else about your cat’s behavior has changed.

Why do cats purr?

Purring occurs in more than one context, so it is not a reliable standalone measure of contentment. Look at posture and behavior, and consider what is happening around the cat. A relaxed cat seeking contact and a cat that seems distressed should not be interpreted identically just because both are purring. PetMD and the Library of Congress describe purring in varied circumstances.

The Library of Congress explains that purring involves the larynx, laryngeal muscles, and a neural oscillator. It also mentions possible links between purring and bone strengthening, pain relief, or wound healing; these are proposed links, not proof that purring treats an injury or illness.

Why do cats hiss or growl?

Hissing and growling are warning or defensive clues, not invitations to approach. Fear, a perceived threat, discomfort, and pain can affect a cat’s behavior. Cornell Feline Health Center guidance describes signs of fear-related aggression that can include flattened ears, hissing, bared teeth, and a crouched posture. A cat in pain may also react defensively to avoid touch or movement that could worsen it.

Give a defensive cat room and avoid reaching toward or handling it. The sound and posture can alert you to distress, but neither reveals the cause on its own.

Why might a cat yowl?

Yowling can occur during mating behavior, particularly in cats that have not been spayed or neutered, but it can also signal distress or a need for attention. A new or persistent pattern should not be diagnosed by sound alone. Consider the cat’s circumstances and whether there are other signs of illness or distress.

When does meowing become excessive?

There is no single amount of meowing that is excessive for every cat. The useful comparison is with that individual cat’s usual pattern. A marked increase, an abrupt change, a different-sounding vocalization, or repeated vocalizing that seems connected to distress warrants attention. The ASPCA recommends a veterinary check when a cat meows a lot because a medical condition may be causing distress or increased vocalization.

How to respond to a change in your cat’s noises

  1. Notice the pattern. Record when the sound happens and what precedes or follows it. Tracking patterns can help you identify whether it is tied to a particular situation.
  2. Read the whole cat. Consider posture, ears, tail, activity, appetite, and surroundings alongside the sound. None of these clues alone proves an emotion or diagnosis.
  3. Keep your distance if the cat is defensive. A hissing or growling cat may be frightened, uncomfortable, or in pain. Avoid touching it or a potentially painful area.
  4. Contact a veterinarian about significant changes. Seek advice if vocalizing becomes excessive, changes abruptly, sounds different, or occurs with signs of distress or illness. A veterinarian can assess possible medical causes.

Chirps, trills, and chattering are also familiar cat noises, but their meanings cannot be confidently reduced to a single explanation here. As with other sounds, avoid treating a noise as a precise translation without considering the individual cat and the situation.
