A dog that carries, cuddles, or appears to feed a stuffed toy may be showing maternal behavior. In a female dog, this can sometimes accompany pseudopregnancy (also called false pregnancy), especially after a recent heat and alongside nesting or physical changes. But the toy behavior by itself cannot diagnose false pregnancy, confirm that a dog sees the toy as a puppy, or rule out a real pregnancy or another medical issue.
What Winny’s toy-feeding behavior can—and cannot—tell us
Winny’s nightly routine is consistent with a dog treating an object in a mothering way. The Merck Veterinary Manual describes dogs in false pregnancy nesting with inanimate objects such as toys or shoes. That makes pseudopregnancy one possible explanation for the behavior, not a conclusion about Winny: her spay status, heat-cycle timing, chance of mating, other signs, and veterinary findings are not given.
There is an important distinction between an observed behavior and biological maternal care. A peer-reviewed review of domestic dogs describes maternal care of actual puppies, including nursing and early-life care. A dog carrying or appearing to feed a toy is an interpretation of what she is doing with an object; it does not establish that she believes the toy is a puppy. When false pregnancy may be relevant
Pseudopregnancy is associated with the hormonal changes that follow heat. UC Davis describes it as typically appearing 45–60 days after a normal estrous (heat) period. The signs are linked to declining progesterone and rising prolactin; UC Davis notes that prolactin is responsible for most behaviors seen during an episode. This timing is a clinical description, not a prevalence statistic or a way to diagnose a dog from timing alone. Signs that can occur together
- Nesting or mothering inanimate objects, including toys.
- Mammary enlargement.
- Milk production.
Not every dog will show every sign, and any one sign—including toy-mothering—needs to be considered alongside the dog’s history and physical condition.
How a veterinarian checks what is going on
Similar signs do not establish whether a dog is experiencing pseudopregnancy or is actually pregnant. Merck says a veterinarian can assess the medical history and physical examination and use X-rays or ultrasonography to eliminate the possibility of true pregnancy. If Winny has had access to an intact male, recently finished a heat, or developed physical signs, share those details with her veterinarian rather than relying on the toy behavior to decide.

What to do if the behavior comes with physical signs
For an uncomplicated false-pregnancy episode, Merck says signs usually resolve on their own in 1–3 weeks and treatment is often unnecessary. Do not express or milk the mammary glands: stimulation can encourage further milk production. If Winny seems uncomfortable or the behavior and physical signs are troublesome, contact a veterinarian to assess her and discuss whether care is needed.
UC Davis notes that reducing stimulation—such as interrupting self-nursing or removing toys—may help in some cases, while most episodes resolve with time. Whether to change a dog’s access to a valued toy depends on her symptoms and situation, so ask a veterinarian for advice rather than abruptly taking it away as a universal remedy.
