Some dogs may fit a busy household better than others, but none is effortless. These 10 breeds are the examples featured in Daily Paws’ lifestyle-oriented selection—not a scientific ranking—and each brings different needs for grooming, exercise, company, handling, or breed-specific care. The right match depends on the time and resources you can reliably provide.
What “easy to care for” really means
Low maintenance is not one trait. A short coat may take less styling but still shed; a dog that needs less vigorous exercise may need more companionship or careful heat management. Daily Paws notes that every dog needs care, exercise, and training. Before choosing, consider brushing and bathing, daily activity and enrichment, how long the dog will be alone, safe handling, and any recurring grooming costs.
The profiles below summarize the breeds in Daily Paws’ list. Breed tendencies are not guarantees about an individual dog.
Ten breeds to consider
Basset Hound
A Basset Hound’s short coat is easy to keep at a manageable length, but it can shed profusely. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recommends weekly brushing with a soft brush or shedding tool, regular nail trims, occasional bathing, and a daily moderate walk. Daily Paws also flags weekly ear cleaning. Factor in shedding, ear care, and a scent-led dog’s need for activity—not just coat length.

Brussels Griffon
This small breed may suit a smaller home, but it still needs activity and human company. AKC distinguishes smooth and rough coats and recommends at least a half-hour of moderate exercise daily. The breed’s flat face can mean breathing concerns in hot or humid conditions, and its strong attachment to people may make long periods alone difficult. Small size does not automatically mean low grooming or low companionship needs.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Daily Paws describes Cavaliers as friendly companions, but cautions that they may develop separation anxiety if left alone for long stretches. Their affectionate reputation is not a reason to assume they will be comfortable with a household’s long daily absences.
Rank #2
Chihuahua
Daily Paws says both Chihuahua coat types need only a quick weekly brushing. Their small size also means they can be delicate around young children, so consider whether everyone in the household can handle a small dog gently and safely.
Dachshund
Daily Paws describes a routine built around a couple of neighborhood walks and interactive toys, and advises care around stairs because of potential back injury. Coat care depends on type: AKC says smooth-coated Dachshunds need little beyond wiping, while other coat types differ. Maintaining a healthy body condition and muscle tone through proper diet and exercise remains important.

French Bulldog
French Bulldogs may need less strenuous activity than dogs suited to long workouts, but they are not a low-vigilance choice. AKC recommends weekly brushing and keeping facial folds clean and dry. Because hot or humid weather can be dangerous for a flat-faced dog, avoid exertion in those conditions and plan outings with heat in mind.

Greyhound
Daily Paws characterizes Greyhounds as calm indoors, with short bursts of exercise and walks. That description may appeal to someone looking for a quieter home companion, but it does not remove the need for regular activity and attention. Evaluate the individual dog’s needs rather than treating a breed label as a guarantee.
Rank #4
Italian Greyhound
Italian Greyhounds have a simple short coat, but that is only one part of their care. Daily Paws describes them as sensitive and attached to favorite people. AKC says they are active and need regular exercise; it also recommends regular, preferably daily, tooth brushing. Do not let an Italian Greyhound off lead outdoors in an unfenced area, since it may chase small animals.
Pug
Daily Paws describes Pugs as relatively low-energy and suggests weekly brushing and monthly bathing to help with wrinkle and skin hygiene. Treat “low activity” as a relative description, not a sign that the dog needs no exercise or routine care.

Shih Tzu
Shih Tzus can be manageable in exercise needs—AKC says short daily walks and indoor play suit them—but their coat requires substantial attention if kept long. AKC recommends daily combing of the mustache and topknot, cleaning the corners of the eyes, bathing about every three or four weeks, and regular nail trimming and ear cleaning. A professional groomer can give the dog a shorter puppy trim; that reduces coat length but means budgeting for grooming appointments.

Compare your household’s actual routine with the dog’s likely needs rather than looking for a breed that is “easy” in every respect. A dog that needs less coat styling may still shed, need exercise, or prefer close company. A dog with modest exercise needs may call for careful heat management or frequent grooming. Think through:
- Coat and cleaning: How much brushing, bathing, shedding cleanup, ear or face care, and nail trimming can you handle?
- Activity and enrichment: Can you provide the walks, play, and interaction the individual dog needs?
- Time alone: Will the dog be comfortable with your normal schedule, or will you need to arrange company?
- Handling and safety: Can children and other household members interact safely with a small or delicate dog?
- Special precautions and costs: Are you prepared to manage heat limits, routine care, or regular professional grooming?
Meet the individual dog and discuss its routine with a responsible breeder, rescue, or veterinarian before deciding. A breed profile can help narrow the search, but it cannot tell you exactly how a particular dog will fit your home.
