Usually, an Alaskan Malamute is the bigger, more powerfully built dog, while a Siberian Husky is lighter and built for efficient travel over distance. Blue eyes are another useful clue: the Siberian Husky standard allows them, but the Alaskan Malamute standard lists blue eyes as a disqualifying fault. Both breeds have thick double coats, so fur alone is not enough to tell them apart.
How to tell a Malamute from a Husky at a glance
Start with the dog’s overall build and eyes, then check the head, ears, and coat. These clues describe breed-standard tendencies, not a guarantee about an individual dog; appearance alone cannot confirm a dog’s breed.
- Build: Malamutes are generally larger and more heavily built. Huskies are medium-sized and lighter.
- Eyes: Blue eyes are permitted in the Siberian Husky standard. The Alaskan Malamute standard requires brown eyes and identifies blue eyes as a disqualifying fault.
- Head and ears: A Malamute has a broader head and bulkier muzzle; a Husky’s muzzle is medium-width. Husky ears are set high and point straight up, while Malamute ears are set lower and point slightly forward.
- Coat: Both breeds have a thick double coat. The Husky’s coat tends to lie smoothly and look more uniform in length; the Malamute’s is coarser and longer in areas such as the shoulders, back, rump, breeching, and plume.
How much bigger is a Malamute?
The breed standards make the difference in working build clear, but their figures are not promises about every dog. The Siberian Husky standard gives males a weight range of 45–60 pounds and females 35–50 pounds. The Alaskan Malamute standard describes desirable freighting sizes of 85 pounds for males and 75 pounds for females. These are standard figures, not survey averages or a way to determine an individual dog’s health.
The American Kennel Club’s Malamute breed profile gives a height range of 23–25 inches and a weight range of 75–85 pounds. The profile’s ranges are breed information; individual dogs can fall outside a stated ideal or profile range.

What do their eyes, muzzles, and ears look like?
Eye color
Siberian Huskies may have brown or blue eyes, one of each, or parti-colored eyes. The Alaskan Malamute standard specifies brown eyes; blue eyes are a disqualifying fault under that standard. This makes eye color a helpful standards-based clue, though it should not be treated as proof of breed on its own.
Head and ears
A Malamute’s head and muzzle look broader and bulkier than a Husky’s medium-width muzzle. Huskies have high-set ears that point straight up. Malamute ears are set lower and angle slightly forward. Consider these features together with the dog’s build rather than relying on a single detail.

How are their coats different?
Both dogs have thick double coats suited to cold-weather heritage. The Husky coat is typically more even in length and smooth-lying. The Malamute coat is coarser, with more length over the shoulders, back, rump, breeching, and tail plume. Coat appearance can vary, so it is a supporting clue rather than a reliable standalone identifier.
For routine grooming, a suitable undercoat rake is one tool category owners of either double-coated breed may consider. The breed comparison sources describe coat type but do not endorse a particular tool.

Why were Huskies and Malamutes bred differently?
The Siberian Husky originated in Siberia and was developed to pull lighter loads over long distances. The Alaskan Malamute originated in Alaska and was developed for heavier freighting work over shorter distances. The American Kennel Club comparison quotes Siberian Husky Club of America president Lenore Demmin describing the Husky as a “marathon runner” and the Malamute as a “weightlifter.”
That history helps explain the contrast in their typical build: a lighter, more efficient Husky and a larger, stronger Malamute. It does not mean every dog today performs the work its ancestors were bred for.

Do their activity levels and behavior differ?
The AKC comparison describes Huskies as especially driven to run and potentially prone to escape attempts, so owners should take secure containment seriously. It also describes Malamutes as active dogs that may need careful management around dogs of the same sex. These are reported tendencies, not fixed rules for every individual; training, environment, and the dog’s own temperament matter.
Can appearance alone identify the breed?
No single visual clue settles the question. Standards describe an ideal breed type, and real dogs may not match every standard feature. Coat color and a snowy setting are especially weak evidence because both breeds have thick double coats and Arctic sled-dog histories. If breed identity matters, rely on reliable records or an appropriate identification process rather than a quick visual guess.
