How to Create a Pet First Aid Kit, According to a Vet

A vet-guided checklist for assembling a pet first aid kit, tailoring it to your animal, and keeping emergency medicines and evacuation supplies in perspective.

A useful pet first aid kit holds basic wound-care and handling supplies, emergency contacts, and your pet’s medical information. Keep it where you can reach it quickly, tailor it with your veterinarian, and use it only as a bridge to veterinary care—not as a substitute for it.

What should go in a pet first aid kit?

Start with a sturdy, water-resistant container. Label it, choose an accessible place, and make sure everyone in the household knows where it is. Keep records in a water-protected sleeve or pouch. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) 2025 checklist and Red Cross guidance support these basics:

  • Contacts and records: your regular veterinarian, the nearest after-hours emergency veterinary hospital, and animal poison-control details. Add animal control if it is relevant locally. Include a copy of your pet’s medical records and a current list of medications.
  • For checking and cleaning: a digital thermometer, small flashlight, tweezers, saline solution, sterile lubricating jelly, and an eye dropper or large syringe without a needle.
  • For wounds and bandaging: gauze pads and roll, nonstick pads or clean cloth, nonstick or self-adhering bandage, adhesive tape, blunt-ended scissors, and disposable gloves.
  • For safe handling and transport: clean towels, a spare leash and collar or harness, and a carrier suited to your pet. A muzzle may be useful for some dogs when appropriate and safe; never muzzle a pet that is vomiting.
  • For a broken nail: styptic powder is included in Red Cross pet first-aid guidance.

A towel may help with gentle restraint for some cats, but restraint can increase risk if an animal is frightened or in pain. Avoid forcing a struggling pet; ask your veterinarian how to handle your animal safely.

How to assemble a kit that fits your pet

Choose supplies you can use safely

Check that supplies are clean, intact, and appropriate for your animal. Some items may be shared with a household human first-aid kit, but do not assume that every product or tool is suitable for a pet. Make sure the carrier, leash, harness, and any restraint equipment fit your pet.

Assemble your own or inspect a ready-made kit

You can assemble a kit at home or buy one through a pet retailer, as the ASPCA notes. There is no single established best brand. For any ready-made kit, compare its contents with the checklist above, check that sizes and restraint items suit your pet, and inspect expiry dates and replenishment needs. Confirm that the container is portable and protects contents from water. If a kit includes medication or treatment products, ask your veterinarian whether and how they should be used.

Personalize it with your veterinarian

Ask your veterinarian what your pet’s health, age, species, or routine makes especially important to have on hand. Keep current medication information with the kit, but do not add medicines on the assumption that a human dose or general online instruction will be safe for your pet.

What not to do with medicines or suspected poisoning

First aid is not a replacement for professional treatment. The AVMA puts it plainly: “First aid care is not a substitute for veterinary care, but it may save your pet’s life until you can get them veterinary care.”

Do not give human medicines or induce vomiting based on a general kit checklist. The AVMA’s mention of activated charcoal and 3% hydrogen peroxide is conditional: use activated charcoal only if a veterinarian or poison-control center directs you to, and contact a veterinarian or poison-control center before inducing vomiting. Do not repeat a dose unless instructed. Hydrogen peroxide must not be used on wounds.

If you suspect poisoning, promptly call your veterinarian, a local emergency veterinary hospital, or an animal poison-control service. Follow their directions rather than trying a treatment from the kit on your own.

When the kit is not enough

A kit can help with immediate basic care while you arrange veterinary help, but it cannot diagnose an injury or illness. Contact a veterinarian or emergency hospital when your pet may need professional assessment or treatment; in suspected poisoning, make that call promptly. Keep emergency contact details in the kit so you do not have to search for them under pressure.

Keep evacuation supplies separate from first aid

A first-aid kit is for immediate supplies; an evacuation kit is for keeping your pet safe and cared for if you must leave home. The two can be stored together, but an evacuation bag needs more than bandages. The Red Cross disaster checklist includes secure carriers, leashes or harnesses, food and water, bowls, a litter pan and litter for cats, medications, medical records, photographs, feeding and behavior notes, and veterinary contact information. Protect records from water.

For its emergency go bag, the ASPCA’s guidance published September 1, 2026 recommends at least seven to ten days of food and water and two weeks of medication. These are evacuation-supply recommendations, not contents or quantities for a small first-aid kit; adjust supplies to local needs and your veterinarian’s advice. Rotate food and other perishable or expiring items, and check the kit regularly so it remains usable.
