Terriers were developed to investigate, chase, and tackle problems that many dogs would avoid. That working background still shows up in the modern terrier: a small body can contain remarkable stamina, determination, and enthusiasm for anything that moves.
The 18 breeds below are energetic terriers, but they are not interchangeable. Some are satisfied with a brisk daily outing and games, while others need demanding exercise, training, or organized dog sports. Energy is also separate from prey drive: a terrier may be physically tired and still unsafe off leash near squirrels, cats, or other small animals.
What makes a terrier “energetic”?
“Energetic” is not a formal breed rating, and no single exercise schedule suits every dog. Age, health, weather, conditioning, and personality all matter. A puppy, an adult in peak condition, and a senior of the same breed may have very different limits.
For these breeds, activity should usually combine movement with a job for the brain. Walks, retrieving, scent games, obedience, agility, rally, earthdog, barn hunt, tracking, and puzzle feeding can all help. Repeating the same drill or walking the same route forever may not satisfy a clever terrier.

1. Airedale Terrier
The Airedale is the largest terrier and combines strength with a busy, intelligent mind. Daily play is important, but a simple block walk may not be enough for every individual. Varied training, retrieving, scent games, and safe opportunities to run can help prevent boredom. Its size means that poorly managed adolescent energy can be considerably more disruptive than the antics of a tiny terrier.
2. Australian Terrier
This compact working terrier is very active and benefits from daily play as well as regular walks or hikes. Its hunting instinct is a practical management issue, not just a personality detail: walks should generally be on leash, and off-leash exercise belongs in secure fencing. The Australian Terrier can adapt to different homes, provided activity and companionship do not disappear.
3. Border Terrier
The Border Terrier is active without always demanding the relentless intensity associated with the most driven Russell types. For many healthy adults, a brisk half-hour walk or a lively play session may be a useful part of the day, with additional activity depending on the dog. Because Borders may chase, open fields and unfenced trails are poor places to test recall.

Playful, muscular, and exuberant, the Bull Terrier needs regular physical outlets and interaction with its people. Daily moderate exercise, including longer walks, can be appropriate, while retrieving, trick training, and suitable dog sports add mental work. Its enthusiasm can become rough or inconvenient if exercise, manners, and impulse control are treated as separate concerns.

- [Treat Distribution] Our food dispenser has differently sized spheres at both ends. As dogs push the toy, it moves within a fixed area, allowing dogs to continuously chase and play with it. During movement, food is dispensed from the food holes on both sides of the toy.
- [Adjustable Switch] Each of the two spheres with a food dispensing switch, making it suitable for various sizes and types of pet dry food or snack. The switch can be adjusted according to the different sizes of dog food. It also allows control over the amount of food dispensed, extending or shortening the time it takes for pets to obtain food. It is more conducive to a healthy dog diet.
- [Increase Pet Intelligence] This dog treat puzzle toy combines intellectual training with food rewards. When pets push this toy, it will not only be to get delicious food, but it will also stimulate their intelligence and hunting instinct. This design not only meets the needs of pets but also encourages them to learn and grow in the game.
- [Prolonged Play] The dog enrichment toy is designed to limit the amount of treats your dog gets while encouraging more extended playtime. This is intended for effective playtime for dogs and is NOT a chewed toy. It is also dog boredom buster toys and best dog gift to keep them busy when dogs are left home alone, relief anxiety.
- [Attract Dogs' Attention] With barbell shaped design and bright color, the dog puzzle toy ball can attract your dog's attention, stimulate their curiosity and drive them crazy to roll it. Size: 6.1*3.44*3.44in/15.5*8.7*8.7cm.
5. Irish Terrier
The Irish Terrier is lively, outgoing, and described by the American Kennel Club as possessing abundant energy. Several walks a day may be useful when a secure yard is unavailable. Play and training should be part of the routine, rather than relying on the dog to entertain itself safely outdoors.
6. Lakeland Terrier
The Lakeland is zesty and clever; its challenge is mental engagement as much as raw stamina. A long daily walk or brisk jog, combined with regular chances to run in a securely fenced area, can suit an adult. Training should change often because repetitive exercises can bore this breed. Scent work, trick training, and earthdog-style activities offer more satisfying variety than endless repetition.
7. Standard Manchester Terrier
The Standard Manchester Terrier is swift, athletic, and built for active participation. It generally benefits from a couple of good walks each day plus chances to chase toys, run, and play vigorously in a safe setting. A reliable-looking recall should not override its chase instinct around wildlife or fast-moving animals.
8. Norfolk Terrier
The Norfolk is a small working terrier with what the AKC calls “boundless energy.” Long walks, fetch, and social activity can provide appropriate outlets, but its extremely high prey drive affects everyday planning. A leash and secure fencing are essential around roads, open land, and small pets.
9. Norwich Terrier
Inquisitive and energetic, the Norwich needs enough exercise to support both physical and mental health. Its size can make the activity seem deceptively easy to provide, but a few hurried trips outside may leave the dog looking for its own project. Games, training, and secure outdoor exploration work better than unsupervised freedom, since hunting instincts remain strong.

10. Parson Russell Terrier
The Parson Russell is a high-energy terrier with a powerful prey drive and a strong history as a hunting dog. It is best matched with an active household prepared to provide long walks, vigorous play, and consistent training. Outside secure areas, leash use is the sensible default. This is commonly called a Jack Russell in everyday conversation, but Parson Russell Terrier is the current AKC breed name; it is distinct from the AKC Russell Terrier.
11. Rat Terrier
The Rat Terrier may be calmer than some other terriers, but “calmer” does not mean sedentary. Daily walks, play, training, and time with its people help meet its needs. Its prey drive also makes unrestricted off-leash activity risky in open areas. Food puzzles and scent games can give this adaptable breed a useful job indoors.
12. Russell Terrier
The Russell Terrier is not a good fit for a household that prefers quiet, minimal activity. Its energy can seem nearly limitless, particularly when the dog has not been given a clear outlet. Hikes, long walks, games, mentally demanding training, and—where safely managed—bike-run activities can help. As with the Parson Russell, the hunting instinct requires secure management, not merely more exercise.
13. Smooth Fox Terrier
The Smooth Fox Terrier is lively and athletic, with an appetite for movement and interaction. Long walks, retrieving games, and play in a large secure area can exercise both body and brain. Training should include polite behavior and impulse control because an energetic dog that also enjoys chasing can quickly turn ordinary distractions into a pursuit.
14. Teddy Roosevelt Terrier
The Teddy Roosevelt Terrier is an energetic, capable companion that often enjoys learning as much as running. Agility, obedience, and rally are especially useful ways to combine movement, attention, and teamwork. Short training sessions spread through the week can be more productive than one exhausting session, particularly for a young dog still learning self-control.

15. Toy Fox Terrier
The Toy Fox Terrier proves that a small dog can still be athletic. It may enjoy walking, running, hiking, and indoor play, and its size can make it adaptable to apartment living. That adaptability depends on regular activity and engagement; a small home is not a substitute for exercise. Protect this lightweight breed from unsafe play with much larger dogs and from outdoor chase situations.

The Welsh Terrier is high-energy and benefits from a long walk about every day, along with running time in an enclosed area. Regular attention and exercise can reduce the unwanted behavior that often appears when a working terrier is under-stimulated. Games, training, and sniffing opportunities add variety without requiring every outing to become a long-distance expedition.
17. West Highland White Terrier
The West Highland White Terrier is alert, active, and intelligent, with a tendency to chase moving objects. Walks and play are a starting point; agility, obedience, rally, earthdog, and similar activities can provide a more complete outlet. Keep the Westie leashed or behind secure fencing around traffic and wildlife, regardless of how obedient it seems at home.
18. Silky Terrier
The Silky Terrier is a genuine terrier in temperament and working heritage, even though the AKC places it in the Toy Group. Its “energetic high spirits” make it a lively companion rather than a decorative lapdog. Walks, interactive play, and short training games can suit its size, while careful supervision is important around larger dogs and small animals.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to live successfully with an energetic terrier
- Build activity gradually. Puppies and dogs returning to exercise after illness or inactivity need conditioning, not an immediate marathon.
- Mix physical and mental work. Follow a walk with scent searching, a few obedience repetitions, a food puzzle, or a retrieving game.
- Use secure equipment and boundaries. A leash, properly fitted harness or collar, and reliable fencing matter more than confidence in a dog’s recall.
- Teach an off-switch. Reward settling on a mat, resting after play, and calm behavior around household activity.
- Watch the dog, not the stopwatch. Heat, pavement, age, weight, joint health, and conditioning change what is safe. Stop for concerning fatigue, lameness, breathing difficulty, or behavior that is unusually withdrawn.
Apartment living is not automatically disqualifying for an energetic terrier. Several small breeds can adapt to limited indoor space when their daily exercise, training, companionship, and bathroom routine are dependable. Conversely, a large yard does not solve the problem by itself: many terriers will dig, patrol, bark, or chase rather than exercise constructively when left to their own devices.

FAQ
Which energetic terrier is best for an active owner?
There is no universal best choice. Russell, Parson Russell, Airedale, Welsh, Smooth Fox, and Irish Terriers may suit people who want substantial daily activity and training. A Border or Toy Fox Terrier may be a better match for someone seeking an active but smaller companion. Meet adult dogs and discuss temperament with responsible breeders or rescue organizations before deciding.
Are small terriers easier to exercise than large dogs?
Not necessarily. Norfolk, Norwich, West Highland White, Silky, and Toy Fox Terriers are small but can be highly active and strongly motivated to chase. Their bodies require less distance to tire than a large dog’s, but they still need regular movement, attention, and mental stimulation.
Can an energetic terrier live in an apartment?
Often, yes, if the household provides dependable daily walks, play, training, and opportunities to use the dog’s nose and brain. Apartment residents also need a plan for barking, hallway distractions, stairs or elevators, and safe leash management. A yard is helpful but does not replace interaction.
How much exercise does an energetic terrier need each day?
Breed profiles generally use terms such as daily, regular, ample, or moderate exercise rather than one medically appropriate number of minutes. Start with age- and health-appropriate activity, increase gradually, and adjust based on the individual dog. Ask a veterinarian about limits for puppies, seniors, overweight dogs, or dogs with health problems.

The Bottom Line
Energetic terriers can be rewarding partners for walking, hiking, training, and dog sports, but their needs go beyond simply burning calories. Choose a breed whose drive matches your routine, provide varied physical and mental work, and manage prey instincts with leashes and secure fencing. The right terrier is not merely tired—it has had a safe, purposeful day.
