No home remedy reliably kills every flea life stage. Adult fleas live on your cat, while eggs, larvae, and pupae are usually scattered through bedding, carpets, furniture, and floor cracks.
That is why an established infestation can take two to three months to bring under control. Use the methods below alongside advice from your veterinarian—especially for kittens, sick cats, or heavily infested animals.
1. Comb your cat with a flea comb
A fine-toothed flea comb is one of the safest ways to physically remove adult fleas. Comb slowly, paying particular attention to the:
- Neck and around the ears
- Armpits and groin
- Belly
- Base of the tail
After each pass, dip the comb into lukewarm water containing a little soap. This kills the fleas and prevents them from jumping back onto your cat. Dark, pepper-like specks on the comb may be flea dirt—digested blood that indicates an infestation.

Comb daily during an active infestation. This can be especially useful for kittens or cats that cannot yet use a particular flea medication. However, combing removes adult fleas only. It does not kill eggs, larvae, or pupae in your home, and it does not prevent new fleas from jumping onto the cat.
2. Give an occasional cat-safe bath
A lukewarm bath can wash away adult fleas and flea dirt. If you bathe your cat, use a shampoo labeled specifically for cats and your cat’s life stage. Rinse thoroughly and dry your cat completely in a warm, draft-free area.
Baths provide no lasting flea protection, and most cats do not need routine bathing. Never use human shampoo, household cleaners, or repeated dish-soap baths. Dish soap may kill or drown some adult fleas, but it can strip oils from the skin, cause irritation, and does nothing to control fleas developing in the environment. If it is considered at all, it should be a short-term emergency measure discussed with a veterinarian.
Take extra care with young kittens. Very small kittens can become dangerously cold after a bath. Ask your veterinarian for age- and weight-appropriate flea advice rather than assuming a bath is sufficient.
3. Vacuum thoroughly and often
Vacuuming is one of the most useful non-chemical steps because it removes flea eggs, larvae, flea dirt, and debris that larvae feed on. It can also encourage adult fleas to emerge from protective cocoons, where they can then be removed during later vacuuming.

Vacuum daily for several weeks if possible. Concentrate on:
- Carpets and rugs
- Pet beds and sleeping spots
- Upholstered furniture
- Floor edges and cracks
- Areas under beds and sofas
- Places where your cat spends time
Empty the vacuum immediately after each use. Seal and discard vacuum bags outdoors. For bagless machines, empty the contents outside into a sealed bag, then clean the container according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Otherwise, live fleas may escape from the vacuum.
4. Wash bedding and other fabrics
Wash your cat’s bedding, blankets, removable furniture covers, and other frequently used fabrics in hot, soapy water. Dry them thoroughly, using the warmest setting the material safely allows. Start with the places where your cat sleeps, since eggs and larvae often accumulate there.

Vacuum items that cannot be washed, or isolate them temporarily when that is practical. Washing bedding once will not necessarily end an infestation; repeat it regularly while you continue vacuuming and monitoring.
5. Steam-clean carpets and upholstery
Steam extraction can kill flea stages in treated carpets and upholstery. Focus on areas where your cat rests instead of steam-cleaning the entire home indiscriminately. Let treated surfaces dry fully before allowing your cat back into the area.

Steam cleaning is not a replacement for treating the cat or other pets. Flea pupae can remain protected inside cocoons, so new adults may appear after cleaning. Repeat treatment and monitoring may be needed as those adults emerge.
6. Set up a flea light trap for monitoring
A flea light trap can help confirm that fleas are present and show whether numbers are falling. At night, place a shallow pan of warm water with a few drops of liquid soap beneath a light. Adult fleas may jump toward the light and become trapped in the water.
This is a monitoring tool, not a complete treatment. It does not remove fleas from your cat and does not address eggs, larvae, or pupae. Keep electrical equipment away from water, children, and pets, and prevent your cat from drinking the soapy water.
7. Make outdoor areas less attractive to fleas
Outdoor flea development is most likely in shaded, damp, protected places where animals rest. Check beneath porches, decks, shrubs, doghouses, and similar areas.
To reduce these habitats:
- Remove leaf piles, brush, and outdoor clutter.
- Keep grass maintained.
- Limit your cat’s access to heavily infested resting areas.
- Clean outdoor pet bedding regularly.
Do not routinely spray large, sunny, open areas of lawn. Flea larvae prefer protected habitats, so treating those exposed areas usually offers little benefit and may create unnecessary pesticide exposure.

8. Consider beneficial nematodes outdoors
Beneficial nematodes are microscopic organisms that can target soil-dwelling flea larvae in some outdoor areas. They are most relevant when fleas are developing outside in suitable soil and moisture conditions.

Nematodes are living organisms and can be damaged by unsuitable conditions. They do not treat fleas already on your cat and are unlikely to solve an indoor infestation by themselves.
9. Reduce indoor humidity where practical
Flea larvae are vulnerable to dry conditions. Under the conditions described in veterinary references, prolonged relative humidity below approximately 50% can be lethal to larvae. A dehumidifier may therefore help in a damp basement or persistently humid room.
Use a hygrometer to measure humidity rather than guessing. Do not make the home uncomfortably dry for your cat, and do not rely on humidity control alone. Combine reasonable moisture reduction with vacuuming, laundering, and veterinary flea control when needed.

When natural methods are not enough
Physical removal and environmental cleaning can reduce flea numbers, but a significant infestation often requires a veterinarian-approved, cat-labeled preventive. Treat every pet in the household as directed; treating only the cat you see scratching allows fleas to keep reproducing elsewhere.
Contact a veterinarian promptly if your cat is a kitten, appears weak or lethargic, has pale gums, is heavily infested, develops hair loss or inflamed skin, or may have swallowed fleas. Fleas can cause flea-allergy dermatitis, transmit infections and tapeworms, and cause anemia. Severe infestations can be life-threatening.
