Some sounds can startle or stress cats, but there is no universal list of sounds every cat hates. These seven are common potential triggers, not a ranking: a cat’s response can depend on how loud, sudden, or unfamiliar a sound is—and on the individual cat. Watch your cat’s behaviour rather than assuming a particular noise will bother every cat.
Why some sounds bother cats
Cats hear a broader range of high-frequency sound than people. Cornell reports that humans hear up to about 20,000 vibrations per second, while cats typically sense sounds at 60,000 vibrations per second or greater. That difference helps explain why some sounds may be more noticeable to cats, but it does not mean ordinary noises are painful to every cat.
Sudden, loud, or unpredictable noise can be stressful. Cats in noisy shelter or clinic settings have shown more fear behaviours than cats in quiet environments. When judging a sound, consider its volume, abruptness, predictability, and—most importantly—your cat’s observed response. The available guidance does not establish a universal fear ranking or a decibel threshold for distress.

1. Fireworks and explosive bangs
Fireworks combine loud, sudden bangs with unpredictable bursts. In a 2023 Cats Protection survey, 64% of respondents who had witnessed their cat experience fireworks said the cat showed at least one sign of stress. That is a result from that survey group, not an estimate of how many cats are distressed by fireworks or by noise in general.
2. Thunder and sudden storm noise
Thunder can be startling because it is loud and difficult to predict. A cat may also react to the surrounding changes in a storm, so look for signs of distress rather than attributing every behaviour to the sound alone.

3. Vacuum cleaners
A vacuum cleaner can bring loud motor noise close to the cat, along with movement through its space. Cats may be startled by the noise, the machine’s movement, or both. If your cat retreats when it is running, let it stay in a quiet area rather than bringing the vacuum closer.
4. Alarm clocks and other sudden alarms
An alarm’s abrupt onset can startle a cat, especially when it sounds nearby or at an unexpected time. A cat’s reaction to one alarm does not predict how it will respond to other tones.

Fear is not always obvious: some cats hide their distress. Pay attention to changes from your cat’s usual behaviour, especially around a particular noise. Possible signs include:

Quick Recap
What to do when your cat is frightened by noise
- Reduce the noise where you can. Turn down loud television or radio, and avoid startling your cat. Cornell’s James Flanders, DVM, associate professor of surgery, advises: “Avoid startling the animal.”
- Offer a quiet hiding place. Make a familiar retreat available, such as a cardboard box or a cat bed lined with blankets. Your cat should be able to enter and leave freely.
- Let your cat choose whether to approach. Do not force cuddling or pull a hiding cat out. Give it space unless it seeks contact.
- Take extra precautions during fireworks. Keep your cat indoors and secure doors, windows, and cat flaps. Reducing outside noise can also help.
- Ask a veterinarian about persistent or severe distress. Seek advice if your cat remains distressed or its reaction is severe.
