Birds that sing at night vary by region: in North America, a varied, imitative song may point to a Northern Mockingbird, while in Britain and Ireland common night singers include robins, blackbirds, song thrushes, and nightingales. Nightjars such as the Eastern Whip-poor-will and Chuck-will’s-widow also sing after dark; some other birds may call at night without being regular night singers.

At a glance: nine nighttime birds

This is a reader-friendly set of examples, not a scientific ranking or a claim that all nine sing at night in the same way. The first seven are supported examples of night singing; the Northern Bobwhite and Eastern Screech-Owl may be heard calling at night, but should not be treated as equivalent regular night singers.

Bird Region Nighttime sound and context
Northern Mockingbird North America Varied, imitative song; may sing at night, especially unmated males.
European Robin Britain and Ireland A common night singer in the BTO’s regional guide; not the American Robin.
Common Blackbird Britain and Ireland One of the common night singers identified by the BTO.
Song Thrush Britain and Ireland One of the common night singers identified by the BTO.
Common Nightingale Europe Famous for night song, but not the only bird that sings after dark.
Eastern Whip-poor-will Eastern North America Male repeats its namesake call as a breeding-season song.
Chuck-will’s-widow Southeastern North America Nocturnal nightjar with a repeated four-syllable namesake song.
Northern Bobwhite North America May be heard calling at night; not a regular, persistent night singer in the cited account.
Eastern Screech-Owl Eastern North America May call at night; describe it as a call rather than assuming it is a song.

Birds known for singing after dark

Northern Mockingbird

A Northern Mockingbird’s varied song may include imitations and repeated phrases. Cornell Lab of Ornithology says mockingbirds sing at night, with most nocturnal singers in its account being unmated males; it also notes that night singing is more common during a full moon. These are patterns, not a guarantee about any individual bird. See the Cornell Lab Northern Mockingbird overview.

Why a mockingbird sings at night is not fully understood. Audubon describes pair-bonding and territorial display as possible explanations and notes that bright street and house lights may contribute. Avoid treating lighting or any single explanation as proven for every bird. (Source: National Audubon Society birding FAQ.)

European Robin

In Britain and Ireland, the European Robin is among the common night singers named by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO). It is a different species from the American Robin, so location matters when identifying a bird by name. The BTO guide to nightingale and other night singers provides regional listening context.

Common Blackbird

The Common Blackbird is another night singer identified by the BTO for Britain and Ireland. Use that as regional guidance, not a claim that it is a common night singer everywhere.

Song Thrush

The Song Thrush is also included among the BTO’s common night singers in Britain and Ireland. Its inclusion alongside the robin and blackbird is a reminder that nighttime singing is not exclusive to nightingales.

Eastern Whip-poor-will

The Eastern Whip-poor-will is a nightjar, not a conventional songbird. During breeding season, males repeatedly give the namesake call from conspicuous perches; Cornell describes this repeated call as functioning as a song. Nightjar songs can serve territorial and pair-bonding roles. Compare the Cornell Lab Eastern Whip-poor-will recordings and Audubon’s birding FAQ.

Chuck-will’s-widow

Chuck-will’s-widow is a nocturnal nightjar of the southeastern United States. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency describes its name as a four-syllable song repeated in loud, clear whistles. The agency reports seasonal after-dusk and pre-dawn activity from late April into August in its account. See the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency species page.

Birds that may call at night

Northern Bobwhite

Audubon says the Northern Bobwhite may be heard calling at night, but its nighttime singing is usually less persistent or varied than a mockingbird’s. Treat a nighttime sound as a possible call, not evidence that bobwhites are regular all-night singers. (Source: National Audubon Society birding FAQ.)

Eastern Screech-Owl

An Eastern Screech-Owl may also be heard calling at night, according to Audubon. The dossier supports this as a nighttime call, not as a claim that the owl is a persistent singer. (Source: National Audubon Society birding FAQ.)

Why do birds sing at night?

There is no single explanation for every species. For Northern Mockingbirds, possible factors include territorial display, pair-bonding, unmated males, moonlight, and bright artificial lighting; Audubon notes that the reasons are not fully understood. Nightjars have a different context: their repeated songs can help proclaim territory and maintain pair bonds.

Season and geography matter, too. The Eastern Whip-poor-will’s repeated call functions as a song during breeding season, while the Chuck-will’s-widow’s nocturnal activity is seasonal in the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency account. British and Irish night-singer examples differ from those familiar in North America.

How can I identify a bird singing at night?

  1. Start with your location. In Britain or Ireland, consider the European Robin, Common Blackbird, Song Thrush, and Common Nightingale. In eastern North America, a repeated nightjar chant may suggest an Eastern Whip-poor-will; in the southeast, consider Chuck-will’s-widow.
  2. Describe the sound. Note whether it is varied and imitative, a repeated namesake chant, or a call rather than a sustained song.
  3. Record the date and conditions. Season and lighting can help provide context, especially for mockingbirds and nightjars.
  4. Compare with a regional source. Use recordings and identification guidance from Cornell Lab, Audubon, or the BTO, and check that the species occurs in your region.

A sound recording can help you compare a call, but a match alone is not proof of identity. Check the region, season, and behavior as well. For mockingbirds in particular, nighttime singing can have several possible explanations; do not assume one cause based on the sound alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What bird is singing at night?

It depends on where you are and what the sound is like. A varied, imitative song in North America may be a Northern Mockingbird; in Britain and Ireland, the BTO names robin, blackbird, song thrush, and nightingale as common night singers.

Is a bird singing at night always a nightingale?

No. The Common Nightingale is famous for night song, but the BTO also identifies the European Robin, Common Blackbird, and Song Thrush as common night singers in Britain and Ireland. North America has different examples, including the Northern Mockingbird and nightjars.

Why is a mockingbird singing at night?

Possible explanations include territorial display and pair-bonding, and bright artificial light may contribute. Cornell reports that most nocturnal singers in its account are unmated males; Audubon cautions that the reason for night singing is not fully understood.

Are whip-poor-wills songbirds?

No. Eastern Whip-poor-wills are nightjars, not conventional songbirds. Their repeated call functions as a song during breeding season.

Is a bird calling at night the same as a bird singing at night?

Not necessarily. Some birds, such as the Northern Bobwhite and Eastern Screech-Owl, may be heard calling after dark, but the cited research does not establish them as regular, persistent night singers.
