They need room to exercise, a fiber-rich diet, daily observation, careful handling, and access to a veterinarian who treats rabbits. Before adopting, make sure you can provide that care for the animal’s entire life—often 8–12 years or longer.
1. A rabbit is a long-term commitment
The rabbit you bring home may still be with you years after a child leaves for college, a routine changes, or a move makes pet ownership more complicated. Pet rabbits commonly live 8–12 years, and some live longer.
That commitment includes more than feeding a bowl of pellets. You will need to budget for:
- Hay, greens, measured pellets, and safe treats
- A spacious enclosure or rabbit-proofed room
- Daily exercise and enrichment
- Nail trims, grooming, and routine health checks
- Spay or neuter surgery
- Rabbit-experienced veterinary care, including emergencies
Rabbits are a poor choice if you want a pet that can be left alone for long periods or confined in a small cage. They also are not automatically suitable for young children: rabbits often dislike being picked up, and their fragile spine can be injured if they kick while unsupported.

2. A small cage or hutch is not enough
Commercial “rabbit cages” may be useful as part of a larger setup, but they are not adequate permanent housing by themselves. Rabbits need enough space to stand, stretch, move normally, and exercise every day. A secure indoor pen, a rabbit-proofed room, or a combination of both is usually more appropriate.
Plan the enclosure before adopting. It should include:
- A solid, comfortable floor rather than bare wire flooring, which can injure rabbit feet
- A litter box, hiding place, food and water stations, and toys
- Protection from dogs, cats, unsafe plants, and household hazards
- Daily access to a larger exercise area
Rabbit-proofing is essential. Cover or remove electrical wires, block access to unsafe gaps, and protect baseboards, furniture, and houseplants from chewing. During exercise time, supervise until you know exactly what your rabbit can reach and destroy.
3. Rabbits generally need rabbit companionship
Rabbits are social animals. Human attention is valuable, but it does not always replace the companionship of another rabbit. Many rabbits do best with a compatible, altered partner.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat does not mean placing two unfamiliar rabbits together and hoping they get along. Rabbits may fight when introduced abruptly. A safer process is to:
- Have both rabbits examined and spayed or neutered by a rabbit-experienced veterinarian.
- Keep them in separate, secure areas while they become familiar with each other.
- Use gradual introductions in a neutral space.
- Supervise every interaction until the bond is reliable.
A rescue or rabbit welfare organization may be able to help you find a compatible companion and guide the bonding process. If you plan to keep one rabbit, be honest about the daily interaction, exercise, and enrichment you can provide.

4. Hay is the foundation of the diet
For an adult rabbit, unlimited grass hay should be available every day. Timothy, orchard, oat, and brome hay are common options. Hay supplies the fiber rabbits need for normal digestive movement and helps wear down teeth that grow continuously.
A practical feeding routine usually includes:
| Food | How to think about it |
|---|---|
| Grass hay | Available freely and replenished every day |
| Plain rabbit pellets | Measured rather than left unlimited; the appropriate amount depends on the rabbit |
| Leafy greens | Appropriate varieties introduced gradually |
| Fruit and carrots | Small, occasional treats because they contain more sugar |
Baby rabbits have different dietary requirements from adults, so do not apply an adult feeding plan to a young rabbit without veterinary or reputable rabbit-care guidance. Always provide fresh water.

Cartoon rabbits may live on carrots, but real rabbits should not. Carrots and fruit are relatively sugary. Giving large amounts can crowd out hay and contribute to an unbalanced diet.
Introduce leafy greens one at a time and watch the litter box. If a new food causes soft stool or diarrhea, stop offering it and contact a veterinarian if the problem continues or the rabbit seems unwell. Sudden diet changes are also a bad idea; make changes gradually.
The most important feeding question is not “How many carrots should I buy?” It is “What unlimited grass hay will my rabbit eat reliably?” A rabbit that refuses hay, drops food, drools, or loses weight may have painful dental disease and needs veterinary attention.
6. Loss of appetite can become an emergency
Rabbits should eat and produce droppings regularly. A rabbit that eats less, stops eating, or produces noticeably fewer droppings may have gastrointestinal disease, dental pain, or another serious problem. Gastrointestinal stasis can become life-threatening.

Contact a rabbit-capable veterinarian promptly if you notice:
- No eating or a sharp reduction in appetite
- Few or no droppings
- Diarrhea or very soft stool
- Drooling, dropping food, or difficulty chewing
- Facial swelling, weight loss, weakness, or unusual hiding
UC Davis advises that a rabbit that has not eaten for 12 hours needs immediate veterinary care. Do not wait until the next day to see whether the rabbit improves, and do not give human medication without veterinary direction.
7. Find a rabbit-experienced veterinarian first
Not every general-practice clinic treats rabbits. Before adoption, call local clinics and ask specifically whether a veterinarian regularly sees rabbits, performs rabbit dental evaluations, and provides emergency care for them. Ask where patients are referred outside normal hours.
A rabbit’s veterinary care may include:
- Initial and routine wellness examinations
- Dental evaluation and treatment
- Spay or neuter surgery
- Nail and grooming guidance
- Diagnosis and treatment of digestive illness
- Emergency treatment when appetite or droppings change
Save the clinic’s phone number before bringing the rabbit home. Rabbits can deteriorate quickly, and searching for a suitable veterinarian during an emergency wastes valuable time. Never use leftover antibiotics or human medicines; some drugs are dangerous or toxic to rabbits.
8. Spaying or neutering protects health and improves household life
Altering a rabbit prevents accidental litters, makes introductions and bonding safer, and can reduce hormone-driven behaviors. It is also an important health decision, especially for females: intact female rabbits have a substantial risk of uterine cancer as they age.
The right timing depends on the rabbit’s age, health, sex, and the veterinarian’s experience with rabbit anesthesia and surgery. Choose a veterinarian who routinely performs these procedures in rabbits rather than assuming any clinic will have the same level of expertise.

After surgery, follow the clinic’s instructions closely. Make sure the rabbit is eating and producing droppings, and report concerning changes rather than assuming recovery is proceeding normally.
9. Disease prevention and safe handling need preparation
Rabbit hemorrhagic disease caused by RHDV2 is serious and often fatal in domestic and wild rabbits. In a January 13, 2026 update, USDA APHIS reported RHDV2 in wild populations in at least 14 U.S. states. Ask your veterinarian or state animal-health authority whether vaccination is available in your area and what schedule applies.
Recommended Free Tools
Reduce disease risks by discussing vaccination, cleaning, quarantine procedures for new rabbits, and contact with other rabbits or potentially contaminated equipment. Follow local veterinary and animal-health guidance, since recommendations and vaccine availability can vary.
Handling is equally important. Never lift a rabbit by the ears, legs, or scruff. To pick one up, support the chest and hindquarters securely, hold the rabbit close to your body, and stay low to the ground. A frightened rabbit can kick hard enough to seriously injure its spine if its back end is left unsupported. Children should handle rabbits on the floor with an adult supervising.

Before you bring a rabbit home, confirm that you can answer “yes” to each question:
- Can I commit to 8–12 years or more of care?
- Do I have room for a secure pen or rabbit-proofed room, not just a small cage?
- Can I provide daily exercise, cleaning, enrichment, and observation?
- Can I afford hay, routine care, surgery, and emergency veterinary treatment?
- Have I located a veterinarian who treats rabbits?
- Do I understand that hay—not carrots—is the dietary foundation?
- Can I arrange safe companionship, either through a compatible altered rabbit or substantial appropriate care while seeking a bond?
- Does everyone in the household know how to lift and handle a rabbit safely?
- Have I asked about RHDV2 vaccination and local disease-prevention advice?
If several answers are no, wait and prepare rather than adopting impulsively. The best time to discover that rabbit care is demanding is before a rabbit depends on you.

FAQ
Are rabbits good starter pets?
Usually not in the way people mean “starter pet.” Rabbits have specialized housing, dietary, social, grooming, and veterinary needs. They can be excellent companions for a prepared household, but they are not low-maintenance animals.
Can a rabbit live in a hutch permanently?
No. A hutch or cage alone does not provide enough room or exercise. Use a spacious, secure enclosure and provide regular access to a rabbit-proofed exercise area.
What should I do if my rabbit stops eating?
Contact a rabbit-experienced veterinarian immediately. If the rabbit has not eaten for 12 hours, UC Davis considers that an immediate veterinary-care situation. Reduced droppings, diarrhea, drooling, or weakness make the concern more urgent.
Can I keep just one rabbit?
Some households do keep one rabbit, but rabbits are social and generally benefit from a compatible rabbit companion. Introductions must be gradual and supervised, and both rabbits should normally be spayed or neutered before bonding.
How long do pet rabbits live?
Pet rabbits commonly live 8–12 years, and some live longer. Plan for years of housing, food, enrichment, grooming, routine care, and veterinary expenses.
Do rabbits need a companion?
Rabbits are social animals and generally do best with a compatible rabbit companion. Bonding should be gradual and supervised, with both rabbits usually spayed or neutered first.
How much hay does an adult rabbit need?
An adult rabbit should have unlimited grass hay available every day. Timothy, orchard, oat, and brome hay are common choices. Pellets, greens, carrots, and fruit should not replace hay.
Is it dangerous if a rabbit stops eating?
Yes. Appetite loss and reduced droppings can indicate dental disease or gastrointestinal illness, including potentially life-threatening GI stasis. UC Davis advises immediate veterinary care when a rabbit has not eaten for 12 hours.
The Bottom Line
A rabbit is a small animal with substantial needs: spacious housing, unlimited hay, daily exercise, social contact, preventive care, and rapid attention to illness. Find a rabbit-experienced veterinarian, prepare a safe indoor setup, and budget for a commitment that may last 8–12 years or more before you adopt.
