The Shih Tzu Chihuahua mix—often called a ShiChi, Shichi, or Chi-Shi—is a small companion dog with two very different parent breeds behind it. Some inherit the Shih Tzu’s easygoing, affectionate nature and longer coat; others are more Chihuahua-like: watchful, bold, vocal, and short-coated. Puppies from the same litter may not mature into dogs with the same size, face, coat, or temperament.

That unpredictability is the central fact to understand before choosing one. A ShiChi can be an excellent apartment companion, but it is not automatically quiet, hypoallergenic, low-maintenance, or suitable for rough play. Its small body also makes dental care, safe handling, weight control, and early training especially important.

What is a Shih Tzu Chihuahua mix?

A ShiChi is a cross between a Shih Tzu and a Chihuahua. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes both parent breeds separately, but it does not recognize the ShiChi as a standardized breed. Mixed-breed dogs cannot receive full AKC breed registration or compete in conformation shows, although they may enroll in the AKC Canine Partners program and participate in many companion and performance events.

There is no official ShiChi standard that dictates adult height, weight, coat, muzzle shape, ear carriage, or behavior. Parent-breed traits can help you estimate possibilities, but they cannot guarantee what an individual puppy will become. Even a DNA test can identify ancestry without reliably predicting which physical or behavioral traits will dominate.

Size and appearance

The AKC Chihuahua standard describes a dog measuring 5–8 inches at the shoulder and weighing no more than 6 pounds. The AKC describes the Shih Tzu as approximately 8–11 inches tall and weighing 9–16 pounds. A ShiChi may fall between those figures, resemble one parent more closely, or fall outside both parent-breed standards. Because the cross has no conformation standard, sellers who promise an exact adult size are making a prediction, not stating a breed requirement.

Possible features include:

  • A rounded or apple-shaped head
  • A short or moderately long muzzle
  • Large, prominent eyes
  • Erect, semi-erect, or floppy ears
  • A compact body and fine legs
  • A short, medium, or long coat
  • Many colors and markings

A tiny dog can be injured by falling from furniture, being stepped on, rough play, or contact with a much larger dog. Use ramps or pet steps where appropriate, block unsafe stairs, and supervise interactions with children and bigger pets. Do not allow a child to carry a ShiChi around without an adult present.

ShiChi temperament

The Shih Tzu was developed primarily as a companion and is generally playful, affectionate, and outgoing. The Chihuahua is alert, confident, expressive, and often vocal. A ShiChi may combine these qualities into an affectionate little dog that follows its owner around, notices every sound in the hallway, and announces visitors with enthusiasm.

Other possibilities include wariness around strangers, sensitivity to handling, possessiveness of a favorite person, or persistent barking. These behaviors are not determined by the mix’s name alone. Genetics, early socialization, training, health, and the dog’s experiences all matter.

Early, positive exposure to people, household noises, friendly dogs, grooming, car travel, and different surfaces can reduce the chance that normal experiences become frightening. Exposure should be gradual and rewarding; forcing a nervous puppy into close contact can make the problem worse.

Are ShiChis good with children?

They can live successfully with respectful older children, but they are a risky match for rough or unsupervised play. A child can seriously injure a very small dog by dropping it, squeezing it, chasing it, or accidentally stepping on it. The dog may also bite if it feels cornered or mishandled.

A ShiChi is usually a poor choice for a home where children may:

  • Carry the dog without adult supervision
  • Pull its ears, tail, or coat
  • Chase, corner, or grab it
  • Disturb it while eating or sleeping
  • Play roughly
  • Leave doors, gates, or escape routes open

Teach children to let the dog approach, use gentle hands, and stop interacting when it moves away, freezes, growls, hides, or shows other signs of discomfort. Every interaction between a young child and a dog should be actively supervised.

Exercise and mental stimulation

Most ShiChis do not need the sustained exercise of a working or sporting breed, but “small” does not mean “no exercise.” Begin with several short walks or outdoor sessions, daily indoor play, and brief training exercises. Add food puzzles, scent games, and safe opportunities to explore.

Adjust activity to the individual dog. A Chihuahua-influenced ShiChi may be energetic and busy, while a Shih Tzu-influenced dog may be satisfied with shorter outings and more time beside its owner. Stop before the dog becomes exhausted, particularly if it has a short muzzle or noisy breathing.

Under-exercising and failing to train a toy dog can contribute to barking, fear, frustration, and poor household habits. Carrying the dog everywhere may be convenient, but it does not replace controlled walking and exploration.

Heat and cold safety

The Shih Tzu is a short-faced, or brachycephalic, breed. A ShiChi with a short muzzle may have more difficulty cooling itself during hot weather, humidity, exercise, or stress. Never leave the dog in a parked vehicle, and avoid strenuous activity and hot pavement. Exercise during cooler parts of the day and provide shade, water, and ventilation.

Heavy or rapid panting, excessive drooling, abnormal or very red gums, weakness, loss of balance, collapse, or altered consciousness can indicate heatstroke. Move the dog away from heat and seek urgent veterinary help; heatstroke can become life-threatening quickly.

Some small ShiChis, particularly those with short coats, are also uncomfortable in cold weather. A coat may help if the dog tolerates it, but it must not restrict breathing, movement, or toileting. Ask a veterinarian about exercise limits if the dog has a very short muzzle, persistent noisy breathing, fainting, or poor exercise tolerance.

Grooming requirements

Grooming can range from fairly simple to demanding, depending on the coat inherited from each parent.

Short-coated ShiChis

A short coat may need weekly or occasional brushing, baths when dirty, regular nail trims, and routine ear checks. It can still shed, and a short coat does not eliminate the need for grooming or skin care.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Long- or silky-coated ShiChis

A longer coat needs frequent combing, especially around the ears, armpits, legs, tail, and collar area. Mats can pull painfully on the skin and conceal irritation. If the dog is kept in a short clip, professional grooming about every four to six weeks is a practical starting point. A puppy clip reduces maintenance but does not make the coat maintenance-free.

Long-haired dogs need regular attention around the eyes and face. Seek veterinary care for persistent squinting, redness, discharge, cloudiness, rubbing, or apparent pain.

Dental care is not optional

Small dogs are particularly vulnerable to crowded teeth and periodontal disease. Shih Tzus may also have bite and tooth-position abnormalities associated with their short-headed structure. Bad breath is not simply a normal small-dog trait; it can signal dental disease.

Brush the teeth daily, or at least every other day, with dog-safe toothpaste. Brushing helps prevent plaque but cannot remove hardened calculus, so some dogs need professional dental cleaning. Ask a veterinarian to examine retained puppy teeth, crowded teeth, red or bleeding gums, loose teeth, difficulty chewing, facial swelling, or persistent bad breath.

Do not use human toothpaste unless a veterinarian specifically tells you to. Some human products contain ingredients that are unsafe for dogs.

Training a ShiChi

Start training when the dog arrives home. Use reward-based methods, very short sessions, and rules that every person in the household follows. Shih Tzus generally respond well to praise and rewards; Chihuahuas can be clever, persistent, and quick to develop barking habits. Harsh corrections may increase fear and defensive behavior.

  1. Reward the behavior you want immediately. Deliver the treat or praise within seconds of toileting outside, coming when called, sitting, or settling quietly.
  2. Practice handling gradually. Touch paws, ears, mouth, face, and coat for a second, reward, and stop before the dog struggles.
  3. Control access to the home. Use a pen, crate, or leash supervision until house-training is reliable.
  4. Teach an alternative to barking. Identify triggers, create distance, reward quiet, and teach the dog to look at you or go to a mat.
  5. Socialize without forcing contact. Calmly observing a person or dog from a comfortable distance is useful socialization.

House-training problems

Small dogs have small bladders and may need more frequent toilet opportunities than owners expect. Common causes of failure include too much unsupervised freedom, delayed rewards, punishment after an accident, and an unclear plan for using indoor pads.

Never punish an accident after it has happened. Clean the area thoroughly and increase supervision and toilet breaks. If a previously reliable dog suddenly begins urinating indoors, arrange a veterinary examination rather than assuming stubbornness; urinary disease and other medical problems can cause a change in house-training.

Health concerns

A crossbreed is not automatically healthier than either parent. A ShiChi may inherit health risks associated with the Chihuahua, the Shih Tzu, or its own combination of anatomy and genetics.

Concern Signs that need veterinary attention
Patellar luxation Skipping, carrying a hind leg, stiffness, or reluctance to jump
Eye disease or injury Squinting, cloudiness, redness, discharge, rubbing, pain, or sudden vision change
Airway problems Persistent noisy breathing, fainting, blue or gray gums, or severe exercise intolerance
Tracheal collapse A persistent dry, harsh “goose-honk” cough, especially with excitement, heat, eating, drinking, or neck pressure
Heart disease A new murmur, fainting, rapid breathing, persistent cough, or reduced exercise tolerance
Dental disease Bad breath, bleeding gums, loose teeth, facial swelling, or difficulty chewing

Patellar luxation

Patellar luxation means the kneecap moves out of its normal position. It is a concern in both parent breeds. A veterinarian can grade the condition and advise whether monitoring, weight management, medication, or surgery is appropriate.

Eyes and breathing

Shih Tzus can be affected by cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, retinal detachment, and corneal problems. Prominent eyes can also be vulnerable to trauma. A short muzzle may contribute to brachycephalic airway problems, although a longer Chihuahua-like muzzle does not guarantee normal breathing.

Tracheal collapse and heart disease

Chihuahuas and Shih Tzus are among the toy breeds in which tracheal collapse is seen more often. A harness may be preferable to a neck collar if collar pressure triggers coughing, but equipment is not a substitute for diagnosis. Chihuahuas can also be affected by heart problems such as patent ductus arteriosus and mitral valve disease. New coughing, fainting, or breathing changes should be assessed by a veterinarian.

Weight control

Even a small amount of excess weight can affect a ShiChi’s knees, breathing, mobility, and anesthetic risk. Feed measured portions, count treats as part of the daily calorie intake, and monitor body condition rather than relying only on the number on a scale.

Health testing when buying a puppy

Ask for verifiable health records for both parents. “Vet checked” usually means that a basic examination took place; it is not the same as breed-relevant screening.

Useful records may include:

  • Patella evaluation
  • Ophthalmologist examination
  • Cardiac examination
  • Hip evaluation where appropriate
  • Relevant DNA testing based on the parent breeds and the breeder’s lines

The Chihuahua’s recommended testing includes patella, cardiac, and ophthalmologist evaluations. The American Shih Tzu Club’s 2024 health statement identifies an ACVO eye examination and veterinary patella evaluation for its CHIC pathway, with hip and cardiac evaluations listed as optional.

Search the OFA database using a parent’s registered name or number. A CHIC number confirms that recommended tests were completed and made public; it does not mean every result was normal or that the dog is free from all disease.

Feeding

Feed a complete and balanced diet suited to the dog’s life stage, body condition, activity, and medical needs. Measured meals are preferable to unrestricted feeding for a dog that gains weight easily.

Very small, underweight, ill, stressed, or non-eating puppies can develop low blood sugar. Weakness, unusual sleepiness, trembling, poor coordination, collapse, or refusal to eat requires prompt veterinary advice. Do not rely on internet sugar or feeding protocols instead of professional care.

Living with a ShiChi

A ShiChi can adapt well to an apartment or small home. It still needs daily exercise, enrichment, training, grooming appropriate to its coat, and regular human companionship. Apartment-friendly does not mean quiet: Chihuahua influence can produce frequent alert barking.

This mix may be a poor fit if you:

  • Are away from home for long periods every day
  • Need a reliably silent dog
  • Do not want regular grooming or dental care
  • Have very young children who cannot handle a fragile dog safely
  • Expect a dog to tolerate hot-weather exercise
  • Want predictable adult size, coat, or temperament

Claims to question

Claim Reality
“ShiChis are hypoallergenic.” No dog is completely hypoallergenic. Allergens come mainly from substances such as dander, saliva, and skin secretions, and reactions vary between people.
“A ShiChi will not shed.” Shedding depends on the coat genes inherited from both parents and is not reliably predictable.
“Hybrid vigor guarantees good health.” Crossing breeds does not remove dental, knee, eye, airway, heart, or other inherited problems.
“There is a standard ShiChi size and personality.” There is no universally accepted standard for this cross.
“Teacup” or “Imperial” means healthier. These are marketing terms, not AKC-recognized Shih Tzu varieties. Extreme smallness may create additional welfare concerns.
“Toy dogs do not need training.” They need socialization, safe handling, obedience work, and enrichment just as larger dogs do.

Adoption or purchase checklist

  1. Confirm the dog’s actual age, vaccination history, parasite control, and medical records.
  2. Ask whether a veterinarian has examined the dog and request details of any findings.
  3. Ask about coughing, fainting, breathing difficulty, eye problems, skipped legs, and dental abnormalities.
  4. Observe behavior around strangers, children, dogs, grooming, and handling.
  5. If buying from a breeder, obtain the parents’ registered names and search their health records.
  6. Be cautious of “teacup,” “imperial,” “rare,” “guaranteed hypoallergenic,” or guaranteed-size advertising.
  7. Ask how puppies were raised, handled, socialized, and exposed to ordinary household life.

FAQ

How big does a Shih Tzu Chihuahua mix get?

There is no official ShiChi size range. The AKC Chihuahua standard is 5–8 inches and no more than 6 pounds, while the AKC describes the Shih Tzu as approximately 8–11 inches and 9–16 pounds. A mix may fall between those parent-breed figures or outside them.

  • TWO BRUSH STYLES FOR FIT: The kit pairs a dual-sided toothbrush for standard brushing with a finger toothbrush for dogs sized for small mouths and hard-to-reach spots, so you can match the tool to your dog's comfort and mouth size.

Are ShiChis hypoallergenic?

No. A ShiChi may shed less if it inherits a Shih Tzu-like coat, but no dog is completely hypoallergenic. Coat type and allergen exposure vary between individual dogs.

Do ShiChis bark a lot?

Some do, particularly if they inherit the Chihuahua’s alertness or if barking is reinforced by attention. Identify the trigger, reward quiet behavior, and teach an alternative response rather than punishing every bark.

Are ShiChis good apartment dogs?

They can adapt well to apartments if they receive daily walks, indoor play, training, enrichment, and companionship. However, their small size does not guarantee quiet behavior, and alert barking may disturb neighbors.

Are ShiChis good with young children?

They can live with respectful older children, but their fragile size makes rough or unsupervised play dangerous. Young children should never carry, chase, corner, or handle the dog without active adult supervision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What health problems can a ShiChi have?

Potential concerns include patellar luxation, dental disease, eye disease, airway problems in short-muzzled dogs, tracheal collapse, heart disease, and obesity. The individual dog’s examination and medical history matter more than the designer name.

How often does a ShiChi need grooming?

A short-coated dog may need occasional or weekly brushing. A long or silky coat may need frequent brushing and professional grooming roughly every four to six weeks if kept in a short clip.

Is a ShiChi easy to train?

It can be trainable but may also be persistent, sensitive, or easily distracted. Short, reward-based sessions, consistent rules, early socialization, and frequent toilet opportunities work better than harsh corrections.

The Bottom Line

The Shih Tzu Chihuahua mix can be an affectionate, lively, adaptable companion, but it is not a predictable package. Adult size, coat, shedding, barking, and temperament vary because there is no universal ShiChi standard.
