If a long life is high on your dog-owning wish list, start with the right expectation: breed affects the odds, but it does not set a deadline. In the largest recent comparison of canine survival, small breeds generally outlived large breeds, while individual health, body condition, inherited disease, and veterinary care still made a major difference.

The best current breed-level evidence comes from a UK study of 584,734 dogs, including 284,734 deceased dogs, across 155 recognized breeds. Its figures below are median survival estimates—not guarantees or maximum ages.

The longest-living dog breeds

These were the top nine breeds in the 2024 Scientific Reports analysis:

Rank Breed Median survival
1 Lancashire Heeler 15.4 years
2 Tibetan Spaniel 15.2 years
3 Shiba Inu 14.6 years
4 Papillon 14.5 years
5 Lakeland Terrier 14.2 years
6 Schipperke 14.2 years
7 Border Terrier 14.2 years
8 Italian Greyhound 14.0 years
9 Miniature Dachshund 14.0 years

A median is the midpoint of a group: half the dogs in the study lived longer than that figure and half died younger. It is more useful than a claim that every dog of a breed “lives to” a particular age, but it still cannot predict an individual dog’s lifespan.

The study was based on UK veterinary, insurance, registry, welfare, and rehoming records. Results may differ in other countries because populations, access to veterinary care, breeding practices, and methods of recording deaths vary.

Other breeds often known for long lifespans

The American Kennel Club gives these typical ranges for several breeds commonly associated with longevity:

Breed Typical range
Chihuahua 15–17 years
Chinese Crested 15–17 years
Pomeranian 14–16 years
Yorkshire Terrier 12–15 years
Rat Terrier 13–15 years
Toy or Miniature Poodle Generally 12–15 years
Cocker Spaniel 13–15 years
Whippet 12–15 years
Australian Shepherd 12–15 years
Irish Setter 12–14 years
Belgian Malinois 14–16 years

These numbers do not match the UK study exactly because the sources use different populations and statistical methods. The AKC also notes that reliable, standardized age ranges are difficult to establish for every breed.

Why small dogs tend to live longer

Size was one of the clearest patterns in the large UK dataset. Median survival was 12.7 years for small purebred dogs, compared with 12.5 years for medium purebreds and 11.9 years for large purebreds.

Large and giant dogs generally mature faster and develop age-related conditions earlier. This does not mean that a small dog is necessarily healthier. A Chihuahua may live into its late teens, for example, but can still face dental disease, heart disease, luxating patellas, or other breed-associated problems.

Sex had a smaller association with survival: females had a median survival of 12.7 years compared with 12.4 years for males.

Flat-faced breeds need special consideration

Head shape was also associated with survival. Brachycephalic, or flat-faced, purebred dogs had a median survival of 11.2 years in the study. Mesocephalic dogs—those with more moderate skull proportions—had a median of 12.8 years, while dolichocephalic, or long-headed, dogs had a median of 12.1 years.

The interaction between body size and head shape mattered. Flat-faced medium and large breeds had especially short survival estimates. This is not a reason to dismiss an individual brachycephalic dog, but it is an important factor when choosing a breed. Breathing difficulty, heat intolerance, eye problems, skin-fold disease, and anesthesia risk can all affect welfare and medical needs.

How to help your dog live a longer, healthier life

1. Keep your dog lean

Body condition is one of the most practical factors an owner can influence. Excess weight is associated with orthopedic disease, diabetes, pancreatitis, heart and respiratory problems, and reduced mobility. The AKC cites research suggesting that dogs maintained at a healthy weight may live approximately two years longer than obese dogs.

Do not rely only on the number on the scale. Ask your veterinarian to assess body condition. You should generally be able to feel the ribs without pressing through a thick layer of fat, see a waist from above, and see an abdominal tuck from the side.

  • Measure meals rather than estimating portions.
  • Count treats, chews, table scraps, and food used for training.
  • Use your veterinarian’s target weight, not the feeding guide alone, to adjust portions.
  • Have a veterinarian design the weight-loss plan if your dog is senior, very overweight, or has another medical condition.

2. Schedule preventive veterinary care

At least one veterinary examination each year is a sensible baseline. The American Animal Hospital Association recommends examinations every six months for senior pets, even when they appear well. Older dogs often hide pain and early disease, so “acting normal” does not rule out a problem.

A senior visit may include a physical examination, dental assessment, bloodwork, urinalysis, blood-pressure measurement, or other tests selected according to your dog’s age, breed, lifestyle, and history. Earlier detection can provide more treatment choices and prevent a manageable problem from becoming an emergency.

3. Keep vaccines and parasite prevention current

Age or an indoor lifestyle does not automatically eliminate the need for preventive care. AAHA’s canine vaccination guidance identifies distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, rabies, and—under its updated guidance—leptospirosis as core protections. Other vaccines, including Bordetella, Lyme disease, or canine influenza, depend on local risk and the dog’s exposure.

Ask your veterinarian to tailor the schedule to your region and routine. The same applies to heartworm, flea, tick, and intestinal-parasite prevention: risk varies with geography, travel, household pets, and outdoor access.

4. Treat dental care as routine healthcare

Periodontal disease is common in older dogs and can cause chronic pain, difficulty eating, and other health complications. Small dogs may be particularly challenging because crowded teeth can trap plaque and tartar.

Brush your dog’s teeth at home with pet-safe toothpaste, introduce the process gradually, and ask your veterinary team to examine the mouth regularly. Dental cleanings that require anesthesia should be discussed individually. A veterinarian can assess the benefits, risks, and any pre-anesthetic testing appropriate for your dog.

5. Modify exercise instead of stopping it

Long-lived dogs still need movement and mental stimulation. As a dog ages, change the activity rather than abandoning it. Shorter walks, several gentle outings, scent games, food puzzles, and low-impact play may work better than one strenuous session.

Helpful senior-dog adjustments include:

  • nonslip rugs or mats on slippery floors;
  • a ramp or steps where jumping is difficult;
  • supportive, easily accessible bedding;
  • walks scheduled around heat and cold;
  • gradual increases in activity after rest or illness.

A sudden decline in exercise tolerance is not simply “old age.” Contact a veterinarian about persistent limping, coughing, excessive panting, weakness, difficulty rising, or collapse.

6. Research the breed and the breeder

A long-lived breed is not automatically a low-risk breed. Each breed can have inherited disorders, and health can vary substantially between individual lines.

Before buying a puppy, ask which health tests are recommended for that breed and request documentation of the parents’ results. Where available, verify those results through the relevant breed-health registry. Also ask about longevity, causes of death, and recurring medical problems in close relatives—not just whether the parents appear healthy.

If adopting an adult dog, ask for veterinary records and find out about known diagnoses, medication, dental condition, and mobility. An adult dog’s actual health history may tell you more about near-term care needs than a breed average does.

When does a dog become a senior?

There is no universal senior-age cutoff. VCA describes a dog as generally senior at about 75% of its expected lifespan. That could mean roughly 5–6 years for a giant breed such as a Great Dane, but 10–12 years for some small dogs.

AAHA uses a broader practical benchmark of dogs older than 7 years while emphasizing individualized care. In practice, your veterinarian may recommend senior screening earlier for a giant breed or later for a healthy small breed. The important point is to increase observation and preventive care before obvious decline appears.

What about the oldest dog ever?

Record-breaking individuals should not be confused with normal breed longevity. Bluey, an Australian Cattle Dog, is widely cited as reaching 29 years and 5 months, but one exceptional dog does not establish the typical lifespan of the breed.

Also be cautious with claims that Bobi lived to 31. Guinness World Records withdrew support for that record in February 2024 after concluding that there was not conclusive evidence to prove his date of birth. Neither case changes the population-based lifespan estimates above.

Do mixed-breed dogs live longer?

There is no universal rule that mixed-breed dogs always outlive purebreds. In the large UK dataset, purebred dogs had a median survival of 12.7 years, compared with 12.0 years for crossbred dogs. That finding does not mean every purebred dog will outlive every mixed-breed dog; it means the simple claim that “hybrid vigor guarantees a longer life” is not supported across all dogs.

Health depends on the individual dog’s size, genetics, inherited conditions, body condition, environment, and access to care. A mixed-breed dog can be exceptionally healthy, and a purebred dog from a carefully screened line can also have excellent longevity.

FAQ

What is the longest-living dog breed according to current research?

The Lancashire Heeler had the highest median survival—15.4 years—in a 2024 UK study of 155 recognized breeds. Tibetan Spaniels followed at 15.2 years. These are population medians, not guarantees for individual dogs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do small dogs live longer than large dogs?

Generally, yes. In the large UK dataset, small purebred dogs had a median survival of 12.7 years, compared with 12.5 years for medium purebreds and 11.9 years for large purebreds. Individual health and care still matter greatly.

How can I help my dog live longer?

Keep your dog lean, provide regular veterinary and dental care, follow individualized vaccination and parasite-prevention plans, offer age-appropriate exercise, and choose breeding lines with recommended health screening when buying a puppy.

Is 7 years old considered senior for every dog?

No. AAHA uses older than 7 years as a broad practical benchmark, while VCA describes senior status as about 75% of a dog’s expected lifespan. Giant breeds may be senior around 5–6, while some small dogs may not reach that stage until 10–12.

The Bottom Line

The breeds with the strongest current median-survival figures are mostly small dogs, led by the Lancashire Heeler at 15.4 years and the Tibetan Spaniel at 15.2. But a breed label is only one part of the picture. Keeping a dog lean, detecting disease early, protecting dental health, maintaining safe activity, and choosing carefully screened breeding lines can do more for a long, comfortable life than chasing an impressive number on a lifespan chart.
