Ragdolls are large, blue-eyed cats known for their soft semi-long coats, colorpoint markings, and relaxed social nature. They often enjoy being near people and may become devoted household companions, but the breed is not uniformly silent, helpless, or willing to be carried. A Ragdoll still needs daily interaction, appropriate nutrition, regular grooming, and screening for inherited health problems.

What does a Ragdoll look like?
The Ragdoll is a substantial, muscular cat with a broad chest, long body, large paws, and a full, plumed tail. Its head is wedge-shaped, with a gently rounded forehead, a firm chin, and large oval eyes. The coat is soft and moderately long rather than extremely dense. A neck ruff, feathering on the hind legs, and a full tail are common features.
Ragdoll kittens are born white or nearly white. Their darker points develop gradually as they grow, because the breed carries the temperature-sensitive colorpoint gene. The ears, face, legs, and tail become darker than the warmer central areas of the body. Color can continue to deepen for several years.
Accepted colors vary by registry but commonly include seal, blue, chocolate, lilac, red, and cream. Pattern names describe where white markings appear:

- Colorpoint: darker ears, mask, legs, and tail without substantial white markings.
- Mitted: colored points with white paws and usually a white chin or chest marking.
- Bicolor: more extensive white, often including an inverted V on the face and a largely white underside.
- Lynx or tortie: tabby striping or tortoiseshell shading layered over the basic color and pattern.
Ragdolls have blue eyes because of their colorpoint genetics. Eye shade can range from pale blue to deep sapphire, but the eyes should remain blue rather than green, gold, or copper.
How big do Ragdoll cats get?
Ragdolls are among the larger domestic cat breeds. Adult males frequently weigh more than females, but weight alone does not establish whether a cat is healthy or correctly bred. A broad frame, heavy bone, and muscular build can make a fit Ragdoll look imposing without being overweight.
The breed matures slowly. A Ragdoll may continue filling out until roughly three or four years of age, so a lanky adolescent is not necessarily undersized. During this extended growth period, feed a complete diet appropriate for the cat’s life stage and monitor body condition rather than encouraging rapid weight gain.
Because large cats place more force on furniture and climbing equipment, choose wide, stable beds, reinforced scratching posts, and a litter box that allows the cat to turn around comfortably. A box measuring at least one and a half times the cat’s body length is a useful starting point, though the cat’s actual size and preferences should determine the final choice.

Ragdoll temperament and behavior
Most Ragdolls are people-oriented without being relentlessly demanding. They commonly follow family members from room to room, greet people at the door, and settle nearby while the household is active. Many enjoy being stroked and may tolerate being picked up, but the famous description of the breed “going limp” is not a promise. Some Ragdolls prefer all four feet on the floor.
They are often moderately active rather than hyperactive. Adults still need interactive play, climbing options, scratching surfaces, and opportunities to investigate their environment. A Ragdoll that is quiet and affectionate can still become bored, overweight, or stressed if it spends long periods without enrichment.
Many communicate with soft meows, chirps, or trills. They are not necessarily silent, and personality differs considerably between individuals. A kitten’s socialization, early handling, household environment, and inherited temperament all influence how outgoing it becomes.

Ragdolls can live successfully with children, dogs, and other cats when introductions are gradual and interactions are supervised. Their calm reputation should not be treated as permission for rough handling. Children should learn to support the cat’s body, leave it alone while eating or sleeping, and stop when the cat shows discomfort.
Grooming a Ragdoll
The Ragdoll coat usually needs less intensive maintenance than the dense coat of some other long-haired breeds, but it is not maintenance-free. Comb the coat once or twice a week, increasing the frequency during seasonal shedding or whenever tangles appear.
Check these areas carefully:
- Behind the ears
- Under the front legs
- Along the belly and inner thighs
- Where the hind-leg feathering meets the body
- At the tail base
A metal greyhound-style comb can help find small tangles that a surface brush misses. Work in short sessions, reward cooperation, and avoid pulling. Severe mats can hide irritated skin; do not cut close to the skin with household scissors. A veterinarian or experienced cat groomer can remove extensive matting more safely.
Bathing is usually unnecessary unless the cat is soiled, greasy, or being treated for a skin condition. Introduce water and handling gradually rather than assuming that a supposedly easygoing Ragdoll will accept a bath.
Trim nails as needed, commonly every few weeks, and inspect the ears without inserting cotton swabs deeply. Daily tooth brushing is the most useful home dental habit. If daily brushing is not realistic, start with several sessions per week and ask a veterinarian about products bearing an appropriate veterinary dental endorsement.

Ragdolls do not require a special “Ragdoll food.” Choose a complete and balanced food suited to the cat’s age, reproductive status, activity level, and medical needs. Growing kittens need a diet designed for growth; adults need measured portions that maintain a healthy body condition.
Large, slow-maturing cats can gain excess weight while they are still growing. Weigh portions with a kitchen scale when possible, account for treats, and reassess feeding after neutering or changes in activity. Your veterinarian can help distinguish normal breed size from excess fat.

Ragdoll health concerns
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or HCM, is one of the most important inherited concerns in Ragdolls. The disease causes abnormal thickening of the heart muscle and can eventually lead to heart failure, blood clots, or sudden death.
A known Ragdoll-associated mutation in the MYBPC3 gene can be detected with DNA testing. However, a genetic test does not identify every possible cause of HCM, and a negative result does not guarantee that a cat will never develop heart disease. Echocardiography performed by a veterinary cardiologist is the more direct way to assess heart structure and function.
Seek urgent veterinary care for open-mouth breathing, difficult or unusually rapid breathing, collapse, severe weakness, or sudden inability to use a limb. A blood clot can cause painful hind-limb weakness or paralysis and is an emergency.
Polycystic kidney disease
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) has been reported in cats and should be considered when reviewing a breeder’s health program, although it is more strongly associated with some other pedigreed breeds. Ask what screening is performed in the specific breeding line. Symptoms of kidney disease—such as increased thirst, increased urination, weight loss, vomiting, or poor appetite—need veterinary evaluation and are not diagnostic of PKD by themselves.
Weight, joints, and urinary health
The Ragdoll’s large frame can make excess weight easy to overlook. Obesity increases strain on joints and may worsen mobility, grooming difficulty, diabetes risk, and urinary problems. Have the veterinarian assess body condition at routine visits rather than relying only on the number on the scale.

Reluctance to jump, stiffness, a changed gait, hiding, or reduced play can indicate pain. Urinating outside the box, straining, frequent trips to the box, blood in the urine, or producing little or no urine requires prompt veterinary advice; inability to pass urine is an emergency, especially in male cats.
Dental and general preventive care
Dental disease is common in cats regardless of breed. Bad breath, drooling, red gums, chewing on one side, dropping food, or refusing dry food can signal oral pain. Home brushing helps but does not replace veterinary dental examinations or professionally recommended treatment.
Routine preventive care should include vaccinations, parasite control based on lifestyle and local risk, weight monitoring, and regular examinations. Ask the veterinarian when bloodwork, urinalysis, and senior screening should begin for your cat.

A responsible breeder should be willing to discuss health history openly and provide records rather than relying on phrases such as “healthy lines.” Before placing a deposit, ask for:
- Documentation of veterinary examinations for the parents and kittens.
- The parents’ Ragdoll HCM DNA-test results, with the exact mutation and laboratory report identified.
- Information about cardiac screening, including whether adult breeding cats receive echocardiograms.
- Vaccination, deworming, microchip, and registration records where applicable.
- A written contract covering health guarantees, return provisions, and what happens if the owner can no longer keep the cat.
- Details about socialization, litter training, diet, and the kitten’s usual routine.
Do not interpret “HCM negative” as a guarantee that a kitten is free from all heart disease. It should mean negative for the particular mutation tested. A breeder who refuses to show results, routinely sends kittens home too young, or has many unrelated litters available at once deserves careful scrutiny.
Breed rescues and shelters may also have Ragdoll-type cats or adults needing homes. An adult’s temperament, grooming tolerance, and health needs may be easier to assess than a kitten’s developing personality.
Is a Ragdoll the right cat for you?
A Ragdoll may suit a household looking for a friendly indoor companion that enjoys human company without demanding constant high-intensity activity. It is a less suitable choice if you want a cat that can be left alone for long periods with no enrichment, requires no grooming, or can safely roam outdoors.

FAQ
Are Ragdoll cats really floppy when picked up?
Some Ragdolls relax when held, but not all do. “Floppy” is a tendency and a breed nickname, not a reliable handling trait. Always support the cat and respect signs that it wants to be put down.
Do Ragdoll cats need daily brushing?
Many Ragdolls do well with thorough combing once or twice a week. Daily grooming may be needed during heavy shedding or for an individual coat that tangles easily, especially behind the ears, under the legs, and around the belly.
Are Ragdolls good family cats?
They are often affectionate, tolerant, and sociable, which can work well in families. Children still need supervision and must handle the cat gently. Gradual introductions are important with dogs and other cats.
What health testing should a Ragdoll breeder provide?
Ask for the parents’ Ragdoll-associated HCM DNA results, veterinary health records, and information about cardiac screening such as echocardiography. DNA testing covers one known mutation and does not rule out every form of heart disease.
The Bottom Line
Ragdolls are large, affectionate indoor cats with a manageable semi-long coat and a generally relaxed temperament. They still need regular combing, measured feeding, daily play, sturdy equipment, dental care, and ongoing veterinary monitoring. When choosing a kitten, prioritize transparent health records—especially information about HCM—over size, color, or the promise that every Ragdoll will be a perfectly passive lap cat.
