What Veterinarians Think About the Seresto Collars, Flea and Tick Prevention

Veterinarians generally view Seresto as an effective, long-lasting flea and tick option for many pets—but not a risk-free or universally suitable choice.

Veterinarians do not have a single, universal opinion about Seresto collars. The more accurate view is that Seresto can be an effective, convenient flea and tick preventive for many dogs and cats, but it is not risk-free and is not automatically the best choice for every pet.

When deciding whether to recommend it, veterinarians generally weigh the animal’s species, age, health history, parasite exposure, lifestyle, tolerance of other preventives, and the household’s ability to use the product correctly. A suspected reaction, swallowed collar, entanglement, or unexplained neurologic sign changes that decision immediately.

What veterinarians are evaluating when they discuss Seresto

Seresto is an EPA-registered pesticide collar in the United States, rather than an FDA-approved systemic animal drug. Its polymer matrix contains two active ingredients: imidacloprid 10% and flumethrin 4.5%. The collar gradually releases them onto the skin and coat.

The product is labeled to kill and repel fleas and ticks through contact. That matters because the parasite does not have to complete a blood meal before being exposed to the collar’s active ingredients. The dog product also controls chewing lice.

Veterinary references and toxicology commentary support a risk-benefit approach. Some veterinarians and veterinary toxicologists continue to recommend Seresto, particularly when a long-lasting collar is more practical than a monthly treatment. At the same time, they acknowledge reported skin reactions, neurologic signs, ingestion hazards, counterfeit products, and mechanical injuries.

There is no representative, current nationwide survey showing what all veterinarians think about Seresto. Claims that veterinarians are uniformly either “for” or “against” the product overstate the available evidence.

Why a veterinarian might recommend Seresto

It reduces missed monthly doses

Seresto is designed to provide up to eight months of flea and tick control under normal conditions. That can be useful for owners who frequently forget monthly topical applications or have difficulty giving oral medication.

Long duration does not mean the collar is maintenance-free. It should be worn continuously, fitted correctly, checked regularly, and replaced according to the label. A growing puppy or kitten may need collar adjustments before the eight-month period ends.

It works through contact

Seresto’s labeled flea and tick activity does not rely solely on the parasite biting the pet. For animals at high risk of tick exposure, a product with both killing and repelling activity may be attractive to a veterinarian, although no preventive eliminates every possible bite or tick attachment.

Studies show substantial parasite-count reductions

A European multicenter field study published in 2012 reported average flea-count reductions of 98.3% in cats and 96.7% in dogs. Average tick-count reductions were 98.4% in cats and 94.7% in dogs over the study period.

Those figures support efficacy, but they should be interpreted carefully. The study is not a current U.S. post-market safety study, and study results do not guarantee that every individual pet will tolerate the collar or remain parasite-free.

Consistent prevention matters

The Companion Animal Parasite Council recommends year-round tick control for dogs and cats because ticks may remain active throughout the year and can transmit disease. That recommendation supports consistent use of an appropriate preventive; it does not mean Seresto is required or preferable for every animal.

What concerns veterinarians about Seresto?

Skin irritation and collar fit

Itching, redness, hair loss, and irritation under the collar are recognized problems. More severe local reactions, including dermatitis, inflammation, eczema, or skin lesions, are reasons to remove the collar and contact a veterinarian.

Some pets scratch mildly during the first few days because they are not used to wearing a collar. That is different from worsening irritation, a painful lesion, or persistent rubbing. A collar that is too tight can also create mechanical injury.

Follow the label’s fitting instruction: two fingers should fit comfortably between the collar and the pet’s neck. Check the fit regularly, especially on puppies and kittens.

Neurologic or systemic signs

EPA has identified less common but more serious reports involving signs such as convulsions and ataxia, which means loss of coordination or an unsteady gait. In some moderate or severe reports, signs improved after the collar was removed or returned after it was reapplied.

This pattern does not prove that Seresto caused every reported symptom. Pets can have unrelated illnesses, take other products, or have underlying conditions. It does mean a suspected reaction should not be dismissed. Remove the collar and seek veterinary advice if a pet develops tremors, seizures, marked weakness, severe incoordination, or another concerning change.

The product label also describes rare, usually transient early signs such as depression, appetite changes, increased salivation, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Chewing or swallowing the collar

Ingestion is a different exposure route from ordinary wearing. Veterinary poison-control data indicate that chewing or swallowing the collar can allow the ingredients to be absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract. Vomiting is the most commonly reported sign in ingestion cases; diarrhea, reduced appetite, lethargy, and ataxia have also been reported less often.

If a pet swallows any part of the collar, do not wait for symptoms and do not induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional specifically tells you to. Contact your veterinarian, an emergency clinic, or an animal poison-control service promptly.

Entanglement, choking, and strangulation

A collar can create a mechanical hazard separate from the pesticide ingredients. Pets may become caught on fencing, branches, crate components, or other objects. EPA’s review found that the deaths it classified as probably or definitely related to Seresto involved mechanical strangulation or trauma, often connected with failure of the release mechanism.

That finding is not evidence that the pesticide ingredients directly caused all reported deaths. It does show why the collar’s fit, release feature, and the pet’s environment matter. Owners should be particularly cautious when a pet spends time in places where the collar could snag.

What the EPA review actually concluded

EPA reviewed Seresto incident reports from 2016 through 2020, including approximately 1,400 reported deaths. A report is not the same as a confirmed product-caused death. EPA said many reports lacked enough information to determine causation and found no probable or definite association with collar use for the other deaths in many cases, often because of pre-existing conditions or other factors.

EPA also stated that the reported death rate was similar to that of other pet products it reviewed. The agency concluded that Seresto continued to meet the legal standard under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act, while requiring additional controls:

  • separate dog and cat registrations;
  • label warnings describing reported adverse effects;
  • instructions to remove the collar if those effects occur;
  • better collection of veterinary and consumer incident details;
  • annual reporting of incident and sales data;
  • evaluation of possible changes to the emergency-release mechanism; and
  • a five-year limitation on the current registrations to allow continued review.

There is also a separate criticism from the EPA Office of Inspector General. In a February 29, 2024 report, the OIG said EPA had not provided assurance that the collars could be used without unreasonable adverse effects. It criticized the agency’s incident-data system and the lack of a published domestic-animal risk assessment in the relevant registration-review process.

  • Starts working after 24 hours to kill and repel fleas through contact so pests don't have to bite your dog to die
  • Hassle-free, non-greasy, easy-to-use flea and tick protection

These statements are not contradictory. EPA continued the registrations with mitigation measures, while the OIG criticized whether EPA’s evaluation provided enough assurance about risk.

When Seresto may not be the right choice

A veterinarian may suggest another flea and tick preventive for a pet that has a history of contact reactions, seizures, serious skin disease, difficulty wearing collars, or a tendency to chew objects. Another option may also be preferable when the pet’s lifestyle makes entanglement more likely or when frequent swimming would shorten the collar’s useful life.

Veterinary consultation is especially appropriate before use on pregnant, nursing, debilitated, sick, geriatric, or breeding animals. Dogs and cats must receive their own labeled product. Never use a dog Seresto collar on a cat.

Do not combine Seresto with another flea or tick product without veterinary direction. Adding products can create unnecessary exposure and makes it harder to identify the cause if the animal becomes ill.

Important use details for dogs and cats

Issue What to know
Minimum age Dogs: at least 7 weeks old. Cats: at least 10 weeks old.
Fit Two fingers should fit comfortably between the collar and the neck. Recheck growing pets.
Species Use the labeled cat product for cats and the appropriate small- or large-dog product for dogs.
Water exposure The collar is water-resistant, not impervious to loss of effectiveness. Frequent swimming can shorten protection.
Swimming frequency Elanco states that dogs swimming at least monthly may receive about five months of flea control and seven months of tick control instead of the full eight months.
Existing ticks Ticks already attached when the collar is applied may remain visible and should be removed. Protection against new ticks is not immediate.
Continuous wear The collar is intended to be worn continuously. Intermittent use has not been established as an equivalent prevention strategy.
Disposal Keep used and unused collars out of waterways because the pesticide can harm fish and other aquatic organisms.

Buy from a reliable veterinary or retail source and inspect the packaging. Counterfeit or improperly stored products may not provide the labeled protection and can complicate an adverse-event investigation.

What to do if your pet reacts

  1. Remove the collar if your pet develops significant itching, redness, hair loss, skin lesions, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, tremors, seizures, or incoordination.
  2. Contact a veterinarian, especially for neurologic signs, severe skin injury, repeated vomiting, collapse, or breathing problems.
  3. Do not reapply it unless your veterinarian specifically advises that the collar was unlikely to be responsible.
  4. Save the packaging and collar if possible. The product name, lot number, purchase source, and timing of symptoms can help with treatment and reporting.
  5. Seek immediate advice after ingestion. Do not assume that a topical collar is harmless if swallowed.

For an emergency, call a veterinary clinic or animal poison-control service rather than relying on online symptom searches.

Common claims that need correction

Claim More accurate explanation
“Seresto killed 1,400 or 1,700 pets.” Those numbers refer to reported incidents or deaths, not confirmed product-caused deaths. EPA found probable or definite associations for a subset involving mechanical strangulation or trauma.
“EPA banned or recalled Seresto.” EPA continued the registrations but required additional mitigation, reporting, and follow-up review.
“Seresto is FDA-approved.” In the United States, it is an EPA-registered pesticide collar. EPA generally oversees products that remain on the skin, while FDA oversees systemically absorbed animal drugs.
“It is waterproof and always lasts eight months.” It is water-resistant, and frequent bathing or swimming can shorten the protection period.
“It must be removed before every bath.” Current manufacturer instructions say ordinary bathing does not require removal, although frequent water exposure may reduce duration.
“Because it is topical, swallowing it is harmless.” Ingestion can be more concerning than normal skin contact and warrants prompt veterinary or poison-control advice.

So, what do veterinarians think?

The likely veterinary position is neither an unconditional endorsement nor a blanket rejection. Seresto can be a reasonable choice when the pet is old enough, the correct species-specific collar is authentic, the fit is safe, and the animal tolerates it. Its long duration and contact activity can make reliable parasite prevention easier for some households.

For another pet, an oral or topical preventive may offer a better balance of effectiveness, convenience, and safety. The important question is not whether Seresto is categorically “safe” or “dangerous.” It is whether this particular collar is appropriate for this particular animal, and whether the owner can monitor and use it correctly.

FAQ

Is Seresto considered safe by veterinarians?

Veterinarians generally regard Seresto as an effective option with known risks, not as a risk-free product. It may be appropriate for many dogs and cats when correctly selected, fitted, and monitored. A suspected reaction requires collar removal and veterinary advice.

What are the most concerning Seresto side effects?

Skin irritation is among the more common concerns. More serious reported signs include vomiting, marked weakness, ataxia, tremors, or seizures. Swallowing the collar and mechanical entanglement are separate hazards requiring prompt attention.

Can my dog or cat wear Seresto while swimming?

The collar is water-resistant and does not normally need to be removed for bathing. However, frequent swimming can shorten its effective duration. Elanco reports approximately five months of flea control and seven months of tick control for dogs swimming at least monthly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use Seresto with another flea and tick product?

Do not combine it with another flea or tick preventive unless your veterinarian specifically directs you to do so. Using multiple products can increase exposure and make adverse effects harder to assess.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Veterinarians tend to view Seresto as one potentially useful flea and tick preventive, not as a universally best or completely risk-free choice. Use the correct collar for the pet’s species and size, fit it so two fingers fit comfortably beneath it, monitor the skin and behavior, and remove it promptly if a reaction is suspected. Contact a veterinarian immediately after ingestion, severe skin irritation, neurologic signs, or an entanglement incident.
