Choosing a name for a male cat does not mean you have to stick to a traditionally masculine human name. The best choice might be a classic such as Milo, a food name such as Mochi, a mythological name such as Atlas, or a playful option such as Sir Pounce. This collection contains 390 curated boy cat names: 15 choices for every letter from A to Z.
The list is alphabetical rather than a popularity ranking. For context, Rover’s 2025 U.S. data lists Milo as the leading male cat name and Tater as the fastest-rising male kitten name, while its wider database includes familiar choices such as Leo, Oliver, Loki, Simba, Binx, Jasper, Finn, Theo, and Winston. Many of the names below are also gender-neutral, including Max, Shadow, Tiger, Pepper, and Smokey.

How to Choose the Right Name
- Say it out loud. Call the name from another room and repeat it several times. One- or two-syllable names are often easiest to say consistently, but a longer name can work if you naturally use a reliable nickname.
- Check for sound-alikes. Avoid a name that resembles a command or an important household word. Purina gives “Ray” and “play” as an example of sounds that could be confusing, while VCA cautions against pairs such as Sid and “sit,” or Beau and “no.”
- Match the cat. A quiet gray cat might suit Ash, Smokey, or Nimbus; an energetic climber could be Atlas, Rocket, or Zoom. Waiting a few days can reveal whether the cat is a comedian, a lap cat, a hunter, or an explorer.
- Consider the household. A name should not sound too much like another pet’s name or a family member’s name. This matters especially when several people will be calling the cat.
- Do not worry about gender rules. Names such as Max, Shadow, Pepper, Tiger, and Smokey can suit any cat. “Boy cat” here describes the overall style of the collection, not a requirement.
- Renaming is possible. If you adopt an adult cat, say the old name followed immediately by the new one, reward attention, and gradually stop using the old name. Cats can learn a replacement name with this kind of transition.
These are household pet names, not pedigree registration names. If you plan to register a show cat with the Cat Fanciers’ Association, check its separate naming rules; registered cattery prefixes and a 35-space limit can apply.

FAQ

Ace, Ash, Gus, Jack, Jax, Leo, Max, Milo, Ozzy, Rex, Sam, Theo, and Toby are short, easy-to-call choices from the list.

Should a boy cat name be two syllables?
Not necessarily. One- or two-syllable names are commonly recommended because they are easy to say and repeat, but longer names such as Montgomery, Paddington, or Leonardo can work well when shortened consistently.
Can I rename an adopted adult cat?
Yes. Use the former name followed by the new name for a gradual transition, reward the cat when it responds, and phase out the old name over time.
