When a conventional box is better
A simple box is usually cheaper, easier to understand, and less likely to fail because of a sensor, motor, jam, or app problem. Evaluate:
- Entry height and opening size for the cat’s age, size, and mobility
- Interior dimensions and whether the cat can turn around comfortably
- Ease of scooping and washing
- Odor control without relying on excessive fragrance
- Litter tracking and sticking

Read the nutritional adequacy statement on the back or side of the package before being persuaded by front-of-bag claims. The label should identify the correct species, life stage, and condition. Look for:

- Life stage: growth, maintenance, gestation/lactation, or all life stages
- Nutritional adequacy statement
- Guaranteed analysis
- Ingredient list
- Feeding directions
- Calorie content
- Manufacturer or distributor name and address
“Complete and balanced” means the food is formulated to provide required nutrients in appropriate ratios for the stated species and life stage. Feeding directions are starting points, not immutable prescriptions; adjust for weight trend, activity, health, and veterinary advice.

Claims that need careful reading
- “AAFCO-approved” is not a valid endorsement claim. AAFCO does not approve, certify, or endorse individual foods.
- “Natural” does not mean safer.
- Meat byproducts are not automatically inferior; properly used byproducts can provide useful nutrition.
- Treats and supplements are not automatically complete diets. Supplements can also create nutrient excesses when added to a complete food.
- “Human-grade,” “premium,” and “holistic” do not replace checking adequacy, calories, safety, and suitability.
Raw or undercooked animal-source diets require particular caution. The AVMA notes that apparently healthy animals can carry pathogens and that handling raw diets can expose people and animals to disease-causing organisms. Do not describe raw food as inherently safer or healthier without product-specific evidence and a clear discussion of handling risk.
Check recalls before buying or serving
Food recommendations should be checked against the FDA’s current animal-food recalls and advisories immediately before publication and again before feeding. Lot numbers matter: a recall may apply to one formula, size, production date, or lot rather than every product from a brand.
Recent 2026 notices illustrate why a blanket “safe brand” claim is unreliable. FDA warnings included certain Quest cat-food lots with extremely low or no thiamine, specified Raaw Energy dog-food production ranges involving pathogenic bacteria, one lot of Albright’s Raw Pet Food Chicken Recipe for Dogs for possible Salmonella, and two lots of Pedigree High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor wet dog food for possible foreign plastic contamination. Check the FDA notice for the exact product, lot, and date rather than relying on a brand-level reputation.

For grooming tools, choose according to coat type, skin sensitivity, and the pet’s tolerance. A slicker brush, comb, nail tool, or clipper should be introduced gradually; stop if the pet is distressed or the skin becomes red. Do not use human shampoos, essential oils, or medicated products unless a veterinarian has advised that specific product.
For travel, prioritize a correctly sized carrier or crash-tested restraint, ventilation, secure fastening, and identification. A carrier should allow the cat to stand, turn, and reposition as appropriate for the journey; a dog should not be able to escape a vehicle restraint. Bring water, medication, waste supplies, and a familiar item, and never leave a pet in a parked car.
Safety purchases worth considering include reflective gear, an updated ID tag, a registered microchip, a pet first-aid kit, and a baby gate suited to the animal’s size. A product-checking workflow that prevents expensive mistakes
- Define the job. Write down the species, age, size, health constraints, behavior, and the problem the product must solve.
- Record the exact product. Note the complete model or formula name, size, capacity, dimensions, and included accessories.
