There is no single correct number of cans or pouches for every cat. The right amount depends on your cat’s ideal weight, age, activity, neuter status, health, and the food’s calories. Use the label’s calorie information to calculate a starting portion, then adjust it based on your cat’s weight and body condition.
Daily wet-food amount = daily calorie target ÷ calories in the food
Package feeding directions are starting guidelines, not precise prescriptions for every cat. Cornell Feline Health Center notes that individual needs vary.
How to calculate the daily amount
1. Estimate your cat’s daily calories
For a healthy cat, estimate resting energy requirement (RER) using either formula:

- For cats weighing more than 2 kg and less than 45 kg: RER = 30 × body weight in kilograms + 70.
Multiply RER by an appropriate life-stage factor to estimate daily calories:

These are estimates, not fixed prescriptions. Indoor or sedentary cats may need less; adjust the amount according to weight and body-condition score. See Merck Veterinary Manual’s nutritional requirements guidance.
2. Divide calories by the food’s calories
Find the label’s “Calorie Content” statement. In the United States it normally lists kilocalories per kilogram and per familiar unit, such as a can, pouch, or cup. AAFCO’s calorie guide explains how to read it.
If your cat’s target is 240 kcal per day and the food contains 180 kcal per can:

240 ÷ 180 = 1⅓ cans per day
If the food instead comes in 3-ounce pouches containing 90 kcal each:

240 ÷ 90 = 2⅔ pouches per day
Container size alone does not tell you how much to feed; calorie content varies between products.
3. Count every calorie
Include wet food, dry food, treats, toppers, human food, and calorie-containing supplements in the daily total. If you combine wet and dry food, subtract the wet-food calories from the target rather than adding wet food to the full dry-food ration.
Treats and other non-complete foods should generally provide no more than about 10% of daily calories; Cornell gives a broader 10–15% guideline, as cited in the AAHA feeding-plan guidance.
Practical starting amounts
These examples are starting points, assuming a complete-and-balanced food with the stated calorie density:

A typical 10-pound cat has an RER of approximately 218 kcal per day, but its actual maintenance requirement may be higher or lower depending on activity, neuter status, weight, and health. RER is not automatically the amount every cat should eat, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual.

How often to feed wet food
Most adult cats can eat their daily amount in one or two meals if they receive the full portion and maintain a healthy body condition. Splitting it into smaller meals may help with begging, fast eating, and portion control.
Kittens generally need more frequent meals. Cornell recommends about three meals daily until six months, then twice daily from six months to one year. In multi-cat homes, feed cats separately if one steals food or another does not get a reliable share.
Use ideal weight for an overweight cat
For an overweight cat, calculating calories from current weight can preserve excess weight. Weight-management calculations should generally use the cat’s ideal weight, with substantial calorie restriction supervised by a veterinarian. Simply feeding much less of an ordinary maintenance diet can reduce essential nutrient intake; see AAHA’s weight-reduction guidance.
For kittens, pregnant or nursing cats, cats with diabetes, kidney disease, gastrointestinal disease, or other medical conditions, use a veterinarian’s feeding plan. Medical diets may have different calorie targets and nutrient requirements from ordinary adult-maintenance foods.
Choose a complete-and-balanced wet food
The main wet food should have a nutritional adequacy statement showing that it is “complete and balanced” for your cat’s life stage. Some canned foods, broths, toppers, treats, and specialty products are intended only for intermittent or supplemental feeding. Check the label’s life stage, calorie content, feeding directions, and adequacy statement. AAFCO explains pet-food labels.

Weigh your cat regularly and assess body condition rather than following package directions indefinitely. A cat at ideal body condition should have a visible waist from above and ribs that can be felt under a thin covering of fat. If weight is increasing, reduce calories gradually; if weight is falling unexpectedly, consider illness, dental disease, food refusal, or other causes rather than simply changing the portion.
Merck Veterinary Manual notes that animals of the same weight may require roughly 30% more or less than a calculated estimate to maintain ideal weight and body condition.
A cat that eats little or nothing for several days—especially an overweight cat—can develop hepatic lipidosis, or fatty liver disease. Contact a veterinarian promptly if your cat stops eating or eats substantially less than usual. See VCA’s information on feline fatty liver syndrome.

Cornell describes typical wet food as approximately 70–80% water; Merck reports canned-food moisture ranging from 60% to more than 87%, depending on the product. Cats eating wet food may drink less than cats eating mostly dry food, but fresh water should always be available.

Refrigerate unused canned or pouched food promptly, keep the refrigerator at 40°F or below, and discard food that has spoiled or been left out too long. The FDA advises refrigerating or discarding unused and leftover canned or pouched pet food.

How many cans of wet food should I feed my cat per day?
There is no universal number. Find your cat’s daily calorie target, check the food’s calories per can, and divide the target by that number. For example, 240 kcal divided by 180 kcal per can equals about 1⅓ cans per day.
Is one 3-ounce can of wet food enough for a cat?
It depends on the can’s calories and your cat’s needs. Check the label’s “Calorie Content” statement rather than relying on container size.
Can I feed wet and dry food together?
Yes, but count both toward the same daily calorie target. Include treats and toppers, and reduce the dry-food portion when adding wet food.

Plan calories around the cat’s ideal weight, not always its current weight, and have a veterinarian supervise substantial weight loss. Avoid severe cuts to an ordinary diet without guidance.
