A good hummingbird feeder is not the one with the biggest reservoir or the most decorative shape. It is one you can take apart, scrub properly, and refill often enough that nectar does not sit until it spoils. Cornell Lab of Ornithology identifies easy cleaning and appropriately small capacity as the most important buying considerations.

These are the two feeders that best fit those requirements: the Aspects HummZinger HighView 12-Ounce Feeder for most backyards and the First Nature 16-Ounce Hummingbird Feeder for shoppers who want a practical, inexpensive option.

Best overall: Aspects HummZinger HighView 12-Ounce Feeder

Best for: Most backyards, especially anyone who values straightforward cleaning and an unobstructed view of visiting hummingbirds.

The Aspects HummZinger HighView is a saucer-style feeder with a 12-ounce capacity, four feeding ports, a built-in ant moat, and a raised perch. Its red cover lifts off the nectar reservoir, exposing a shallow bowl that is easier to inspect and scrub than many bottle-shaped feeders.

#1 Best Overall
Aspects HummZinger HighView 12 Oz Hanging Hummingbird Feeder - 429, Red
  • The feeder includes a high view perch that invites hummingbirds to rest comfortably as they drink from any of four feeding ports while also offering an unobstructed view of the birds.
  • Bright red cover attracts humming birds from a distance and is easily removed so the bowl can be cleaned quickly and thoroughly.
  • Constructed of unbreakable polycarbonate.
  • 4 feeding ports.

The feeder is made from UV-stabilized polycarbonate and is backed by Aspects’ lifetime guarantee. The standard 12-ounce hanging model is listed as model 429. Be careful when ordering: the HummZinger name also covers the 8-ounce HighView Mini (model ASP430) and the 16-ounce HighView Excel (model 441).

Why it stands out

  • Simple access: The shallow reservoir has fewer deep corners where old nectar and residue can hide.
  • Useful capacity: Twelve ounces is enough for an active yard without automatically leaving a large batch of sugar water to sit for days.
  • Built-in ant moat: The moat can block ants approaching along the hanging wire, provided you keep it filled with clean water.
  • Clearer viewing: The raised perch and saucer design do not put a large bottle between you and the bird.
  • Good leak resistance: The design is marketed as drip- and leak-proof, although correct assembly and a sheltered location still matter.

In Bob Vila’s 2025 hands-on test of 12 hummingbird feeders over six weeks, the HummZinger HighView was named best overall. The testing considered ease of use, effectiveness, durability, and value.

The limitation: 12 ounces may not be enough for every yard

A busy feeding station may empty this feeder quickly. That is not necessarily a problem. Hummingbird nectar should be replaced before it becomes cloudy or fermented, and Cornell recommends choosing a feeder size that birds can empty in roughly one or two days.

Aspects HummZinger Highview Hanging Hummingbird Feeder - 429, Red,12 oz (Pack of 2)
  • 1 case of 2 Packs, 2 Count Total
  • You will receive 2 feeders per order
  • 4 feeding ports on each feeder allow for simultaneous feeding
  • Built-in ant moat and raised flower feeding ports keep contaminants away from your nectar
  • Designed for easy cleaning and filling

If your feeder is consistently empty within hours, the larger HighView Excel may be worth considering. If nectar remains after several days, the 12-ounce model is the more sensible size.

Best budget pick: First Nature 16-Ounce Hummingbird Feeder

Best for: New hummingbird owners, larger yards, and anyone who wants a low-cost feeder that is easy to replace.

The First Nature 16-ounce feeder, model 3051, uses a wide-mouth reservoir and a two-part base. The opening accommodates a regular bottle brush, while the detachable base gives you access to areas that cannot be cleaned thoroughly on a permanently assembled feeder.

Aspects 430 Hummzinger Highview Mini Hummingbird Feeder, Red/Clear, 8 oz
  • Features 3 feeding ports for simultaneous feeding
  • Built-in ant moat and raised flowers keep contaminants away from your nectar
  • Easy-to-clean design
  • Can be hung or mounted on most posts and poles

Why it stands out

  • Wide-mouth reservoir: You can reach most of the interior with an ordinary bottle brush instead of relying on a narrow cleaning tool.
  • Detachable base: The two-piece construction makes it possible to separate and inspect the feeder during cleaning.
  • Moderate capacity: At 16 ounces, it holds more than the Aspects without resorting to the oversized 32-ounce format.
  • Several feeding ports: More than one hummingbird can use it at a time.
  • Low purchase cost: A specialty bird retailer lists the model at $7.49, though prices and availability vary between sellers.

The trade-off is the bottle-style design. Although the wide opening makes the main reservoir easy to clean, the port openings and base still need careful brushing. A quick rinse is not enough: sugar residue and microbial growth can remain in small openings that are easy to overlook.

Which First Nature version should you buy?

For most people, choose the standard 16-ounce model 3051. The 32-ounce model 3055 is better suited to an exceptionally busy yard where birds reliably consume a large quantity of nectar quickly. Otherwise, its extra capacity can leave unused nectar sitting longer than recommended.

How the two feeders compare

Feeder Capacity Style Best feature Main drawback
Aspects HummZinger HighView, model 429 12 oz Saucer Easy access and unobstructed viewing Costs more than a basic bottle feeder
First Nature, model 3051 16 oz Bottle Wide mouth and inexpensive replacement Ports and base require careful brushing

Both are preferable to a feeder that cannot be fully disassembled. Mold and bacteria can grow in sugar water, including in places you cannot see. Cornell specifically advises taking hummingbird feeders apart when cleaning them.

  • You will receive 2 feeders per order
  • 4 feeding ports on each feeder allow for simultaneous feeding
  • Built-in ant moat and raised flower feeding ports keep contaminants away from your nectar
  • Designed for easy cleaning and filling
  • Can be hung mounted on almost any post

How to use and clean a hummingbird feeder safely

  1. Mix the nectar correctly. Combine one part refined white sugar with four parts water. For a small batch, use ¼ cup sugar per cup of water. Do not use honey or artificial sweeteners; honey can promote fungal and bacterial growth, and artificial sweeteners do not provide the appropriate energy source. Do not add red food coloring.
  2. Fill only what the birds will use. A smaller amount that is replaced frequently is safer than a large reservoir that remains untouched.
  3. Change the nectar on schedule. In moderate weather, replace it every two to three days. In hot weather, change it more often; Cornell advises daily changes when temperatures are especially high.
  4. Take the feeder apart. Remove the cover, reservoir, base, and any detachable pieces. Scrub the reservoir, ports, perches, and seams rather than merely rinsing them.
  5. Act immediately when you see contamination. Cloudy nectar, mold, fermentation, or insects means the feeder needs to be emptied and cleaned at once.
  6. Hang it in partial shade. Direct sunlight heats the nectar and speeds spoilage.

An ant moat or bee guard is useful but not a replacement for cleaning. Leaked nectar can still attract insects, and a feeder coated in sugar water can overwhelm its pest barriers. If you use several feeders, place them far enough apart that hummingbirds cannot see one another. This makes it harder for one territorial bird to control the entire feeding area.

FAQ

Which hummingbird feeder is easiest to clean?

The Aspects HummZinger HighView is easier of these two picks to access and scrub because its saucer-style reservoir is shallow and its cover lifts off. The First Nature is also practical, but its ports and bottle-style base need more detailed brushing.

How often should hummingbird feeder nectar be changed?

Change it every two to three days in moderate weather and more often during hot weather. Cornell advises daily changes when temperatures are especially high. Replace it immediately if it turns cloudy or shows mold, fermentation, or insect contamination.

Best Value
Aspects HummZinger Highview Square Hanging Hummingbird Feeder with Built in Ant Moat
  • Compact, plastic hummingbird feeder holds 8 ounces of nectar
  • Square shape with raised perches on each side adds fun style
  • Center, brass rod allows item to be hung
  • Raised flower shapes create 4 separate feeding ports
  • Red cover lifts off the clear base for easy refilling and cleaning

Is the 12-ounce Aspects feeder large enough?

It is large enough for many backyards, particularly when hummingbirds empty it within one or two days. A heavily visited yard may need a larger model or multiple feeders, while a smaller feeder reduces waste in a quieter yard.

Can I put red food coloring in hummingbird nectar?

No. Use a mixture of one part refined white sugar to four parts water. The feeder’s red parts are enough to attract hummingbirds, and added coloring is unnecessary.

Can I use honey or artificial sweeteners in hummingbird nectar?

No. Use refined white sugar and water. Honey can promote fungal and bacterial growth, while artificial sweeteners do not provide the appropriate energy source for hummingbirds.

The Bottom Line

Choose the Aspects HummZinger HighView 12-Ounce Feeder if easy cleaning, ant resistance, and bird viewing matter most. Choose the First Nature 16-Ounce Feeder if you want the least expensive practical option with a wide-mouth reservoir. Whichever you buy, frequent nectar changes and thorough cleaning matter more than decorative features, color, or feeder material.
