Egg should supplement—not replace—a complete and balanced cat food, which supplies nutrients such as taurine, vitamin A, and arachidonic acid. Cook the egg fully, serve it cool and unseasoned, and keep all treats within 10% of the cat’s daily calories.
How to give a cat egg safely
- Cook it completely. Cook egg mixtures to 160°F (71.1°C). The white and yolk should be firm, and scrambled egg should not be runny. Boiling, poaching, or scrambling are suitable methods. The USDA advises cooking eggs until both white and yolk are firm.
- Leave out the extras. Do not add salt, butter, oil, pepper, sauces, onion, garlic, or other seasonings. Added fats and flavorings are unnecessary, and some ingredients may be harmful to cats.
- Cool it before serving. Offer a little egg mixed into the cat’s usual food or placed on top.
- Keep the portion small. There is no single safe serving size for every cat. Body size, calorie needs, age, health, and the rest of the diet all matter.
Egg is a treat, not a meal. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association recommends keeping treats to no more than 10% of a cat’s daily calories, with at least 90% coming from complete and balanced food. Because egg portions and cats’ calorie needs vary, advice such as “one egg every day” is too broad to apply safely.
Can cats eat egg whites?
Plain, fully cooked egg white provides protein with relatively little fat, so a small amount is generally less calorie-dense than yolk. It should still be an occasional addition, not a replacement for cat food.
Raw egg white is different. It contains avidin, a protein that binds biotin and can reduce its absorption. Repeatedly feeding raw egg whites can contribute to biotin deficiency. Cooking removes this antinutritional effect, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual.

Can cats eat egg yolk?
Cats can generally have a small amount of cooked yolk, but yolk contains substantially more fat and calories than egg white. Too much may cause stomach upset and add unnecessary calories. Fatty meals are also associated with pancreatitis risk.
A small amount of cooked yolk is not automatically dangerous, but offer it sparingly. If a cat has had pancreatitis, needs a low-fat diet, or has another medical condition, ask a veterinarian before introducing it.
Why raw egg is a poor choice for cats
Raw or undercooked egg can carry disease-causing bacteria such as Salmonella. A cat may become ill after exposure, and an infected pet can spread bacteria to people through feces, bowls, or contaminated surfaces. The CDC also warns that raw animal-protein foods can expose pets and households to Salmonella and Listeria.

“Cats are natural carnivores, so raw egg must be safe” is not a reliable safety argument. Carnivorous biology does not eliminate bacterial contamination or the nutritional problem associated with repeated raw egg-white feeding. The VCA advises avoiding raw food in cats; cooked egg is the safer option.
Are eggshells safe for cats?
Eggshells contain calcium, but they should not be added routinely to a cat’s food. Calcium supplementation can upset a diet’s balance, particularly its calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. Only add a calcium supplement if a veterinarian—ideally a veterinary nutritionist—has specified the product and amount. This is especially important for cats eating homemade food; complete commercial cat food does not normally need eggshell calcium added.

Egg is a recognized, though less common, food allergen in cats. Possible signs include persistent itching, skin lesions, vomiting, and diarrhea. Food allergy diagnosis generally requires a veterinarian-supervised elimination diet; randomly removing and reintroducing foods can make results difficult to interpret.
Can kittens eat eggs?
A kitten may tolerate a small amount of plain, cooked egg, but egg is not a substitute for kitten food. Growing kittens need a complete diet formulated for growth, and egg should never become their main protein source.

What to do if a cat eats raw egg
A small accidental exposure does not guarantee that a cat will become ill. Remove the remaining egg, wash contaminated bowls or surfaces, and monitor the cat for:
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Reduced appetite
- Fever
- Lethargy
- Other unusual behavior
Contact a veterinarian promptly if symptoms are severe or persistent, or if the cat is a kitten, senior, or has an underlying illness. Do not try to induce vomiting with salt, oil, hydrogen peroxide, or other home remedies; veterinary toxicology guidance advises against attempting to make cats vomit at home.

How much egg can a cat eat?
There is no universal portion for every cat. Give an amount that fits the cat’s calorie needs, and keep all treats to no more than 10% of daily calories. A veterinarian can help determine an appropriate amount for an overweight or medically treated cat.
Can cats eat raw eggs?
Raw eggs are not recommended. They may carry Salmonella or other bacteria, and raw egg whites contain avidin, which can reduce biotin absorption when fed repeatedly. Fully cooked egg is safer.
Can egg replace cat food?
No. Egg does not provide the complete nutritional profile cats need, including reliable amounts of taurine, vitamin A, and arachidonic acid. It should supplement complete and balanced cat food, never replace it.
Bottom line on cats and eggs
