Puppy biting is usually normal play behavior, but that does not mean you have to tolerate teeth on your hands, ankles, or clothes. Puppies learn bite inhibition—the ability to control how hard they bite—from feedback during play. Your job is to provide the same clear feedback while teaching what they should bite instead.
The most effective rule is simple: gentle play continues; teeth on people make attention and play stop. Consistency matters more than shouting, physical punishment, or trying to “dominate” the puppy.
Why puppies bite and nip
Mouthing is part of how puppies investigate objects, communicate, and play. It is not necessarily a sign of aggression, and it is not only caused by teething. Teething is more closely associated with chewing and gnawing objects. Baby teeth usually begin falling out at about 3½–4 months, with most puppies finishing teething around 6 months, although the desire to chew may continue.
Puppies also learn bite inhibition from littermates. If one puppy bites too hard, the other may yelp and stop playing. When you briefly remove attention after a painful bite, you are giving your puppy a similar lesson.

Use the same response every time
When a puppy is excited, fast hand movements, pushing, or loud reactions can accidentally turn biting into an even better game. Use this sequence instead:
- Freeze. Stop moving the hand, foot, or clothing being targeted. Do not yank it away; quick movement can encourage chasing and grabbing.
- Give one brief response. If the bite was painful, try a short, high-pitched “ow!” or yelp. Some puppies become more excited by squealing. If yours does, skip the sound and stay quiet.
- Remove attention. Turn away or calmly walk out of reach for about 10–20 seconds after a hard play bite. If you are teaching that any tooth contact ends interaction, ignoring the puppy for 30–60 seconds can be appropriate.
- Return calmly. Resume gentle play or offer a toy. Do not return with a lecture or an angry confrontation.
- Repeat immediately. If teeth touch skin again, end the interaction again. The timing is what makes the lesson clear.
At first, apply the consequence to painful bites. As your puppy becomes gentler, gradually stop allowing softer tooth contact too. The eventual goal is no teeth touching human skin, even during enthusiastic play.
Redirect the mouth before the puppy bites
Redirection works best before the puppy has latched onto you. Keep suitable toys in the rooms where your puppy plays so you do not have to search for one during an attack.
- Offer a toy when the puppy approaches hands, sleeves, feet, or ankles.
- For ankle biting, stop walking, freeze your feet, and present a long tug toy. Move again only when the puppy takes the toy or stops mouthing.
- Use fetch, controlled tug, food-stuffed toys, and chew toys instead of wrestling with your hands.
- Reward alternatives such as sitting, licking, taking the toy, or settling. The reward can be a small treat, praise, calm petting, or another short play session.
Tug is not automatically bad for puppies. Keep teeth on the toy, let the person control when the game starts and stops, and end the game if the puppy grabs skin or clothing.

Watch for overtired behavior
Many puppies become dramatically mouthier when they are tired or overstimulated. A predictable routine of naps, quiet time, meals, toilet breaks, training, play, and age-appropriate exercise can reduce the evening “shark” period. When biting escalates after a busy stretch, guide the puppy to a quiet area with a safe chew rather than adding more exciting play.
Make handling rewarding
Handling can provoke nipping if the puppy is worried about being held, brushed, or touched. Feed tiny treats with one hand while gently touching the puppy with the other. Start with easy touches, such as briefly touching a shoulder, then stop. If the puppy becomes frightened or stops taking treats, make the exercise easier or end it.
This approach can be used gradually for paws, ears, collar handling, grooming, and brief restraint. Never force the puppy through a handling exercise that is producing fear.
Manage children carefully
Children should move calmly around a puppy and avoid chasing, teasing, hugging, or grabbing. An adult should supervise every interaction closely. If the puppy becomes too excited, separate them with a gate, pen, or calm break rather than expecting a child to manage the situation.
Provide safe chewing outlets
Give your puppy several appropriate chew and food-stuffed toys, rotating them so they remain interesting. Choose each item for the puppy’s size, chewing style, and health, and supervise use.

Inspect toys regularly. Throw away anything that is breaking apart or allowing the puppy to pull off and swallow pieces. Avoid very hard objects, including hard bones and chews that could fracture baby or adult teeth. If you are unsure whether a particular chew is suitable, ask your veterinarian.
Use socialization and puppy classes wisely
Supervised play with healthy, suitable puppies or friendly adult dogs can help a puppy practice canine communication and use some of its energy. Play should be monitored so that one puppy is not repeatedly overwhelmed, bullied, or allowed to rehearse rough behavior.

Positive, carefully managed exposure to people, handling, places, sounds, and other animals can build confidence. A well-run puppy class can help, provided it uses reward-based training and has sensible vaccination, health-screening, cleaning, and disease-control procedures.
Ask your veterinarian about local disease risks and vaccination timing. Guidance from the American Veterinary Medical Association notes that puppies with at least one vaccine attending an appropriate socialization class were not found to have a greater parvovirus infection risk in the cited guidance; individual veterinary advice still matters.
What not to do
Do not hit, slap, scruff-shake, hold the mouth shut, put fingers down the throat, or use any other painful or frightening correction. These methods can increase fear, defensive behavior, and aggression. Some puppies also interpret them as rough play and bite more intensely.

The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends avoiding pain-, intimidation-, and force-based techniques, including leash jerks, shouting, shaker cans, squirt bottles, shock collars, prong collars, and “alpha rolls.” “Dominance” is not a useful default explanation for puppy biting; play, fear, pain, conflict, possessiveness, and accidentally reinforced behavior can all be involved.

Do not punish a puppy later for a bite or a destroyed object you did not witness. Delayed correction does not connect the consequence to the behavior and may make the puppy fearful of you.
When puppy biting needs professional help
Arrange a veterinary assessment or behavior consultation if the biting does not look like relaxed play, or if it is escalating. Warning signs include:
- A stiff or frozen body, marked facial tension, pulled-back lips, growling, snapping, lunging, or unusually hard bites.
- Biting during grooming, restraint, handling, approach to food, or attempts to remove a toy.
- Guarding food or objects, especially when accompanied by a growl, snarl, or snap.
- A sudden increase in biting, unusual sensitivity to touch, fear, or other possible signs of pain or illness.
- Bites that break skin, happen unpredictably, repeatedly target people, or cannot be interrupted safely.
A veterinarian can look for medical contributors and refer you to a qualified behavior professional. “Trainer” and “behaviorist” are not standardized qualifications by themselves, so ask about education, experience with fear and aggression, and the methods they use. Choose reward-based help rather than anyone promising to fix the puppy through force or dominance.

| Situation | Your response |
|---|---|
| Puppy approaches with a loose, playful body | Offer a toy and reward taking it. |
| Teeth touch skin during play | Freeze, optionally give one brief “ow,” then remove attention. |
| Puppy attacks ankles | Stop moving, present a tug toy, and resume only after the mouth leaves your feet. |
| Biting becomes frantic after activity | End exciting interaction and provide a quiet rest period with a safe chew. |
| Puppy stiffens, guards, or bites during handling | Stop the exercise, prevent another confrontation, and contact your veterinarian or a qualified behavior professional. |
Everyone in the household should follow the same rules. If one person allows hand-wrestling while another removes attention for biting, the puppy receives an inconsistent message and may keep trying.

FAQ
At what age do puppies stop biting?
Many puppies become much less mouthy as they mature, learn bite inhibition, and finish teething around 6 months, but there is no exact stop-biting age. Consistent consequences, toy redirection, rest, socialization, and reward-based training are what teach the household rule.
Should I yelp when my puppy bites me?
You can try one brief, high-pitched yelp for a painful play bite, followed by removing attention. If the sound makes your puppy more excited, stop yelping and quietly walk away instead. Do not keep shouting or make the response into another game.
Is it okay to use a crate for a puppy time-out?
The immediate consequence should usually be the person calmly turning away or leaving for a short period. Avoid using the crate as punishment, especially if it is meant to be a safe resting place. A pen or puppy-proofed area can help with a calm break when the puppy is overtired.
When is puppy biting a sign of aggression?
Seek help if biting comes with stiffness, freezing, facial tension, growling, guarding, snapping, lunging, pain, fear, sudden worsening, unpredictable attacks, or broken skin. Start with your veterinarian, who can assess medical causes and recommend a qualified behavior professional.
The Bottom Line
Stop the interaction the instant teeth touch people, redirect to an appropriate toy, and reward calm alternatives. Prevent overtired, overexcited situations, provide safe chewing and supervised social play, and avoid force. If the puppy is fearful, guarding, unusually intense, painful, or unsafe to interrupt, involve your veterinarian rather than trying to punish the behavior away.
