5. Royal Canin Feline Satiety Support Weight Management
Best for cats that beg between meals.
Satiety Support is a veterinary-exclusive dry diet for overweight and obese cats. It provides just 234 kcal per cup and 2,956 kcal/kg. Royal Canin lists high natural fiber to help cats feel full and high protein to support lean muscle mass.
The guaranteed analysis lists at least 32% crude protein, at least 8.6% crude fat, and 12.1% to 16.1% crude fiber. The fiber level and low calorie density make this a practical option for a cat that becomes vocal or restless when portions are reduced.

Royal Canin reports that 97% of cats in its cited nutritional approach lost weight in three months and that begging was controlled in 82% of cats during weight loss. These are manufacturer-reported study claims, not guaranteed results for an individual cat.
Because the calorie content per can is low, it can be useful when a veterinarian wants a cat to eat a visibly substantial portion while staying within a restricted calorie allowance. The correct number of cans still depends on ideal weight and the cat’s health.

How to choose the right food
Start with calories, not marketing words
“Indoor,” “light,” and “healthy weight” do not automatically mean a food will produce weight loss. Compare the food’s actual kcal per cup, can, pouch, or kilogram with the amount your cat will eat. Lower calorie density, higher moisture, fiber, and appropriate protein can make a restricted diet easier to manage, but the daily portion determines the calorie intake.
For comparison, Royal Canin Indoor Adult lists 325 kcal per cup and describes its calorie level as moderate for maintaining a healthy weight. It is not presented as a dedicated weight-loss formula.
Base the plan on ideal weight
Using the cat’s current weight to calculate a portion can perpetuate the problem. Ask your veterinarian for an ideal target weight, a daily calorie goal, and a safe rate of loss. A body-condition score and muscle assessment are often more useful than the number on the scale alone.
Choose wet, dry, or a combination your cat will actually eat
Wet food is not automatically lower in calories. Consider a veterinary diet when ordinary food is not enough
Satiety Support, Weight Control, and Metabolic are not interchangeable with ordinary over-the-counter “light” foods. They are veterinary-exclusive or prescription-style products intended for particular clinical situations. A veterinarian can decide whether a therapeutic diet is appropriate, especially if your cat has diabetes, urinary disease, kidney disease, arthritis, or another condition that changes nutritional requirements.
How to feed a cat for safe weight loss
- Have the cat examined. Confirm that excess body fat—not illness, fluid, or another problem—is driving the weight change, and establish an ideal weight.
- Set a daily calorie target. Use the veterinarian’s plan rather than copying the feeding amount printed for another cat.
- Measure every portion. Weigh dry food in grams with a kitchen scale when possible. If using cups, use the same standardized measure every time.
- Count extras. Treats, toppers, table food, pill pockets, and food used to administer medication all come out of the daily calorie allowance.
- Feed scheduled meals. Free-feeding makes intake difficult to measure. Divide the daily portion into two or more meals, or use a timed feeder or food puzzle.
- Change foods gradually. Follow the manufacturer’s transition instructions; Purina’s current Pro Plan label specifies seven to 10 days.
- Track progress. Weigh the cat regularly and have the veterinarian adjust the portion if weight loss is too slow or too fast. A commonly cited veterinary target is about 0.5% to 2% of body weight per week.
Weight-loss mistakes that can harm cats
- Crash dieting: Deliberately starving an overweight cat can cause loss of lean muscle and hepatic lipidosis, a potentially serious liver condition.
- Ignoring food refusal: If the cat stops eating or eats much less than usual, contact a veterinarian promptly. Cornell notes that refusal to eat can have serious consequences in as little as 24 hours, particularly in an overweight cat.
- Leaving the bowl full: An always-available bowl can quietly add hundreds of untracked calories over time.
- Changing food overnight: A sudden switch can cause digestive upset or make a cautious cat reject the new food.
- Assuming the label tells the whole story: The feeding chart is a starting point, not a substitute for monitoring body condition and weight.
