In dogs, “scabies” usually refers to sarcoptic mange, a contagious skin infestation caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. It can affect healthy dogs of any age or breed and often causes sudden, extreme itching before the skin looks severely damaged.

Sarcoptic mange needs veterinary treatment because it can resemble allergies, fleas, bacterial skin disease, and other forms of mange. It can also spread to dogs that have been in close contact and cause a temporary itchy rash in people.

What causes scabies in dogs?

Sarcoptic mange is caused by microscopic mites that burrow into the outer layers of a dog’s skin. The mites reproduce on the host, and their life cycle can take roughly two to three weeks. A dog’s intense reaction is often caused not only by the mites themselves, but also by sensitivity to mite proteins and waste.

Dogs can become infested through:

  • Direct contact with an affected dog
  • Contact with an infested fox, coyote, or other wild canid
  • Recently contaminated bedding, grooming tools, collars, harnesses, or clippers

Direct contact is the main route. The mites do not usually survive indefinitely away from a suitable host, so a home does not normally remain permanently infested. However, recently used bedding and equipment can contribute to transmission.

#1 Best Overall
Veterinary Formula Clinical Care Antiparasitic & Antiseborrheic Wash, 16 oz
  • PROMOTES A HEALTHY COAT – Support your dog with a soothing wash that clears away environmental stressors, helping manage dry, flaky skin so their coat stays clean and comfortable
  • TOUGH ON FLAKES AND ODORS – This medicated shampoo for dogs uses coal tar and salicylic acid to shed dead cells, leaving a medicinal scent that shows the active ingredients are working
  • SOOTHES SENSITIVE SPOTS – Oatmeal and allantoin provide gentle hydration to help manage seasonal allergies, letting you wash your pet safely without relying on harsh soaps or dyes
  • BALANCED FOR CANINE CARE – Human washes are too acidic, but this pH-balanced formula supports dog skin safely, giving you peace of mind when dealing with an occasionally itchy pup
  • SIMPLE AT-HOME WASH – Spot test first, then massage the shampoo into the coat for 10 minutes, knowing some initial flaking is just a normal part of brushing away dead skin cells

A dog may spread mites before obvious signs appear. Symptoms commonly develop about three to six weeks after infestation, although the timing varies.

Scabies versus demodectic mange

These conditions are not interchangeable:

Condition Cause Usually contagious? Typical clue
Sarcoptic mange, or scabies Sarcoptes scabiei mites Yes Sudden, severe itching; may affect multiple animals or people
Demodectic mange Demodex mites Usually no between healthy dogs Hair loss may occur with less dramatic itching, especially in localized cases

Only an examination and appropriate testing can distinguish the causes reliably. A dog can also have more than one skin problem at the same time.

Signs and symptoms of scabies in dogs

The most characteristic sign is intense, persistent itching. Affected dogs may scratch, chew, lick, rub against furniture, or repeatedly shake their heads. The itching can be severe even when very few mites are present.

Common signs include:

  • Red bumps, papules, crusts, and scabs
  • Hair loss from scratching and rubbing
  • Crusted or irritated ear margins
  • Lesions on the elbows, hocks, belly, chest, legs, or face
  • Thickened, darker skin in longer-standing cases
  • Open sores from self-trauma
  • Secondary bacterial or yeast infections

Scabies becomes especially suspicious when the itching starts suddenly, is unusually severe, follows contact with another dog or wildlife, or affects more than one animal in the household. Some dogs show widespread disease, while others have initially subtle lesions.

How veterinarians diagnose canine scabies

Diagnosis is based on the dog’s history, distribution of lesions, degree of itching, exposure risk, examination of other household animals, and testing. A veterinarian may use:

  • Several deep skin scrapings examined under a microscope
  • Hair examination or other parasite testing
  • Fecal flotation in selected cases
  • An antibody test where available
  • A carefully supervised treatment trial

A negative skin scraping does not rule out sarcoptic mange. Mites can be difficult to find, particularly when the dog has already scratched away the affected skin. A veterinarian may take multiple scrapings from suitable areas and still make a presumptive diagnosis based on the overall pattern and response to treatment.

Other conditions that may look similar include flea allergy dermatitis, food or environmental allergies, bacterial folliculitis, yeast dermatitis, ringworm, and demodectic mange.

How scabies in dogs is treated

Use only a treatment selected or confirmed by a veterinarian. The safest option depends on the dog’s age, weight, breed, pregnancy or nursing status, medical history, seizure history, and other medications.

Prescription parasite treatments

In the United States, selamectin is FDA-labeled for treating and controlling sarcoptic mange in dogs. The label specifies a topical dose, and some dogs require a second monthly dose. It is labeled for dogs at least six weeks old.

Topical imidacloprid/moxidectin products are labeled for sarcoptic mange in some countries or regions. Certain isoxazoline products, including medicines containing afoxolaner, fluralaner, or sarolaner, may also be used by veterinarians. Depending on the product and country, use for sarcoptic mange may be on-label or off-label.

“Off-label” means a veterinarian is using an approved medicine in a way that is not specifically listed on its label. It does not automatically mean the treatment is unsafe, but the drug, dose, and schedule should come from the prescribing veterinarian.

Lime-sulfur dips and other options

Lime-sulfur dips can be effective and may be considered for some dogs, including certain young animals. They often require repeated applications and careful handling because the solution can stain, smell strongly, and irritate skin or eyes if used incorrectly.

Amitraz and ivermectin have historical uses against mites, but they are not appropriate for unsupervised home treatment. In particular, high-dose ivermectin can cause serious neurologic toxicity in dogs with ABCB1/MDR1 sensitivity, including many Collies and Collie crosses. Toxicity can also occur in other dogs. Do not give livestock or human parasite products to a dog unless a veterinarian has prescribed them.

Important isoxazoline precaution

Isoxazoline flea and tick medicines are considered safe and effective for most dogs, but the drug class has been associated with neurologic reactions such as tremors, poor coordination, and seizures. These reactions can occur in dogs with or without a previous seizure history. Tell the veterinarian about any seizure disorder or neurologic symptoms before starting one of these products.

What to expect after treatment

Successful mite treatment does not always stop itching immediately. The skin may remain inflamed after the mites have been eliminated, and secondary infections may need separate treatment. Hair regrowth can also take time.

Persistent signs may indicate reinfestation, an untreated contact animal, an incorrect diagnosis, a secondary infection, or a treatment schedule that requires adjustment.

Treating other pets and preventing reinfestation

Every dog that has had close contact with the affected dog should be identified and discussed with a veterinarian. Contact dogs may need treatment even if they look healthy because signs can be delayed.

Do not automatically treat cats or other species with a dog product. Some canine parasite products are dangerous to cats, and the appropriate approach depends on the species and suspected mite.

Useful prevention steps include:

  1. Keep the affected dog away from unfamiliar dogs and shared grooming facilities until the veterinarian says normal contact is appropriate.
  2. Have all close-contact dogs evaluated or treated according to veterinary instructions.
  3. Wash or replace bedding used by the affected dog.
  4. Clean collars, harnesses, grooming tools, blankets, and other frequently used items.
  5. Follow product directions for laundering, drying, or disinfection.
  6. Complete every scheduled dose rather than stopping when the itching improves.

Whole-house fogging or saturating the home with pesticides is usually unnecessary. Cleaning bedding and equipment matters, but treating the dog and close-contact animals is the central part of control.

Can people catch scabies from dogs?

Yes. People who handle a dog with sarcoptic mange may develop an intensely itchy, temporary dermatitis. Canine-adapted mites generally cannot complete their life cycle on humans, so this is usually self-limiting after the animal source is treated. It is not the same as persistent human scabies, which is caused by the human-adapted mite Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis.

Anyone in the household who develops an ongoing rash or severe itching should speak with a physician and mention the possible exposure. Never apply a dog’s mange medicine to a person.

When a dog needs prompt veterinary care

Arrange a veterinary appointment promptly for sudden, severe itching or suspected exposure. Seek more urgent care if the dog has rapidly spreading hair loss, widespread crusts, open or infected sores, marked lethargy, poor appetite, fever, or signs of pain.

Scabies is treatable, but delaying care can allow the dog to injure its skin and spread mites to other animals. A veterinarian can also check for allergies, infections, and other causes if mite testing is negative.

FAQ

Can scabies in dogs go away on its own?

It is unlikely to resolve reliably without appropriate treatment. Dogs can continue spreading sarcoptic mites, and severe scratching can cause skin wounds and secondary infections. Veterinary treatment is the safest way to eliminate the infestation and identify affected contact animals.

Can I use ivermectin to treat my dog’s scabies?

Do not use ivermectin without veterinary direction. High doses can cause serious neurologic poisoning, especially in dogs with ABCB1/MDR1 sensitivity. A veterinarian can choose a safer, appropriate product and schedule.

Do I need to disinfect the entire house?

Usually not. Sarcoptic mites depend primarily on the animal host and do not normally survive indefinitely in the environment. Wash or replace bedding and clean grooming equipment, collars, harnesses, and other recently used items, while focusing on treatment of the dog and close-contact animals.

Can humans get scabies from an infected dog?

People can develop a temporary itchy rash from canine sarcoptic mites, but these mites generally do not reproduce continuously on humans. Persistent itching or a rash should still be evaluated by a physician, and dog medication should never be used on people.

The Bottom Line

Scabies in dogs is usually sarcoptic mange: a contagious mite infestation marked by sudden, severe itching, crusts, and hair loss. A negative skin scraping does not always exclude it. Veterinary-prescribed treatment, evaluation of close-contact animals, and cleaning of bedding and grooming equipment usually control the problem; hazardous home remedies and unsupervised ivermectin should be avoided.
