“The Rainbow Bridge” is a comforting pet-loss story about what may happen after an animal dies. It imagines a peaceful meadow where pets are free from illness, pain, and age. They play there while waiting for the people they loved. When their human companion eventually dies, the two are reunited and cross the Rainbow Bridge together.
The phrase is also sometimes confused with Bifröst, the rainbow bridge in Norse mythology. Bifröst connects the human world, Midgard, with Asgard, the realm of the gods. It is not the source of the modern pet-loss story.
What does the Rainbow Bridge mean for pet owners?
For many people, the Rainbow Bridge is a metaphor for reunion after death. It gives pet owners a way to imagine their dog, cat, horse, or other companion safe and healthy after the end of life.
In the familiar story, a pet reaches a green meadow after dying. Animals that were sick, injured, or elderly become energetic again. They have food, sunshine, companionship, and plenty of room to run and play. The pet waits in this meadow until the person it loved arrives. At that point, they recognize one another, reunite, and continue onward together.

Religious and nonreligious pet owners use the image in different ways: as a literal belief, a hopeful possibility, or simply a symbolic way to talk about the bond they shared with an animal.
Who wrote the Rainbow Bridge poem?
The best-supported attribution today is Edna Clyne-Rekhy, a Scottish artist. She wrote the text in 1959, when she was 19, after the death of her Labrador retriever, Major.
Clyne-Rekhy kept the handwritten original and made typed copies for friends. Those copies circulated without her name, which helps explain why the text was treated as anonymous for so many years. It was not originally published as a prominently credited work with a clear author biography.

The Rainbow Bridge became especially well known in the United States after Dear Abby printed it in February 1994. The column had received an unattributed copy and asked readers whether they knew who had written it. No verified author was identified at the time.
Later research connected the surviving manuscript and the account of Major’s death with Clyne-Rekhy. Reporting published in 2023 made her the most credible known author of the modern pet-loss text.
Why do some sources name different authors?
The text circulated anonymously, was copied and adapted repeatedly, and appeared in several versions. That created a confusing trail of attributions.
| Claim | What the evidence indicates |
|---|---|
| The author is unknown | This was the standard claim for decades, but it is now outdated in light of the evidence identifying Edna Clyne-Rekhy. |
| Paul C. Dahm wrote the original | Dahm is linked to a later book and version of the Rainbow Bridge material, not the 1959 text attributed to Clyne-Rekhy. |
| William N. Britton wrote it | Britton published a longer version in the 1990s, but that does not make him the author of the earlier text. |
| It came from a Native American tradition | This explanation has circulated, but it is not supported by the evidence about the modern text’s authorship. |
Differences between versions are another reason quotations and author names do not always match. Some publications shorten the story, change its wording, or combine it with later additions. An adapted version should not automatically be treated as the original 1959 text.

Is the Rainbow Bridge the same as Bifröst?
No. The images are similar, but the concepts have different origins and purposes.
Bifröst is the rainbow bridge in Norse mythology. It links Midgard, the world of humans, with Asgard, the home of the gods, and is guarded by Heimdall. It is part of a mythological system about gods and cosmic realms.
The modern Rainbow Bridge pet story is a 20th-century text about animal death, mourning, and the hope of reunion. It describes a meadow where pets wait for their owners. There is no evidence that the pet-loss text is simply a retelling of Bifröst.
Why can the Rainbow Bridge be comforting?
Pet grief can be intense because animals are part of everyday life. Their absence can affect routines, the home, family relationships, and a person’s sense of companionship. The Rainbow Bridge image gives that loss a narrative: the animal is not imagined as erased, but as restored, loved, and waiting.

It can also help people acknowledge the importance of an animal without needing to settle questions about the afterlife. Someone may use the phrase while knowing it is a metaphor. Others may believe it describes a real place. Neither interpretation changes the central message: a pet’s life mattered, and the relationship continues to matter after death.
Not everyone finds the phrase helpful. Some grieving owners prefer direct language about death, religious funeral traditions, cremation or burial rituals, or a private memorial. Saying that a pet “crossed the Rainbow Bridge” is an option, not a requirement for mourning.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you use the idea to remember a pet?
If the image feels meaningful, you can adapt it into a memorial that reflects your animal’s actual personality and life. For example:
- Create a memory book: Include photographs, veterinary records, adoption information, favorite habits, and stories that show who your pet was.
- Make a small memorial: A framed photograph, collar display, paw print, plant, or engraved stone can give a physical place to remember them.
- Write your own message: Describe what you hope your pet is doing now, or simply thank them for the years you shared.
- Support another animal: Donate food, medication, or an adoption fee in your pet’s name if that feels appropriate.
If grief is interfering with sleep, work, eating, or daily care for a prolonged period, consider speaking with a veterinarian, pet-loss support group, or mental-health professional. Losing a companion animal is a genuine bereavement, and support is available even when other people do not understand its depth.

The Rainbow Bridge is primarily a comforting metaphor or pet-loss story, not an established religious doctrine or scientifically verified place. People interpret it according to their own beliefs.
Did Edna Clyne-Rekhy write the Rainbow Bridge poem?
The strongest current evidence identifies Scottish artist Edna Clyne-Rekhy as the author of the text. She wrote it in 1959, at age 19, after the death of her Labrador, Major.
What does “my pet crossed the Rainbow Bridge” mean?
It usually means that the pet died. The original story is more specific than that phrase suggests: the animal waits in a peaceful meadow until it can reunite with its human companion.
Is the Rainbow Bridge from Norse mythology?
No. Bifröst is the rainbow bridge in Norse mythology, linking Midgard and Asgard. The modern Rainbow Bridge pet-loss story is a separate 20th-century text.

The Bottom Line
The Rainbow Bridge is a modern pet-loss story about animals recovering in a peaceful meadow and waiting to reunite with their people. It was anonymous for decades, but the best-supported attribution now identifies Edna Clyne-Rekhy, who wrote the text in Scotland in 1959. The phrase is not the same as Bifröst, the rainbow bridge of Norse mythology, and pet owners may treat it as a belief, a metaphor, or simply a tender way to remember a beloved animal.
