These 23 free dog pumpkin carving stencils cover everything from broad, beginner-friendly Labrador and Pug faces to more detailed Husky, Poodle, and Scottish Terrier designs. The current Better Homes & Gardens collection has 23 patterns—not 24. Older lists sometimes include a Bulldog stencil, but Bulldog is not part of the current collection.
Download the pattern you like, resize it to fit your pumpkin, and follow the stencil’s key: solid lines are cut all the way through, while dotted areas are etched by scraping away only the outer skin.

Best choices for a first pumpkin
If this is your first stencil project, start with a design that has a recognizable outline and broad sections rather than lots of tiny fur marks. The Labrador Retriever, Beagle, Boston Terrier, Chihuahua, Dachshund, and Pug are the most approachable options in this group.

How to use a dog pumpkin stencil
- Choose a suitable pumpkin. Look for a firm pumpkin with a smooth front and enough height and width for the pattern. A large-breed face or a long profile may not fit on a small, deeply ridged pumpkin.
- Hollow and dry it first. Remove the seeds and stringy flesh, then scrape the inside wall behind the carving area thinner. A thinner wall is easier to pierce and makes the finished design brighter.
- Resize the PDF. Print the stencil at its default size first, then enlarge or reduce it with your printer or a photocopier. Place the paper against the pumpkin before transferring it so you can check the fit.
- Tape the pattern in place. Dry the pumpkin’s surface and use enough tape to keep the paper from shifting over the curve. If the sheet buckles, make small relief cuts around the outside of the paper rather than forcing the design flat.
- Transfer every line. Use a pin or pumpkin-poking tool to make closely spaced holes along the stencil lines. Tight spacing matters around eyes, noses, ear tips, and other small features.
- Remove the paper and check the map. Before cutting, confirm which areas are solid-line cuts and which are dotted-line etching. A stencil is not a coloring page: cutting every marked area through can make the pumpkin collapse.
- Etch first when possible. Scrape away only the orange skin in dotted areas. Leaving the lighter flesh intact lets those sections glow without weakening the pumpkin.
- Cut the solid lines. Use a small serrated pumpkin saw and work slowly. Preserve the bridges between the eyes, ears, muzzle, and surrounding pumpkin unless the pattern specifically shows them as cut-out sections.
- Light it safely. A battery-operated LED candle is the better choice for a family display or a home with pets. Put the pumpkin where it cannot be knocked over.
Etching versus cutting: the part that makes faces work
Most dog portraits need two levels of light. Through-cut sections appear bright, while etched sections glow more softly and supply facial shadows, fur, and markings. If you cut through every dark-looking area, you lose that contrast and may remove the thin pieces holding the design together.

For an etched section, hold a scraping tool at a shallow angle and remove the skin gradually. Stop when the surface is pale and translucent; there is no need to gouge deeply into the flesh. For a detailed Husky, Boxer, Scottie, or Yorkie, this step often matters more than making every tiny cut perfect.

Common problems and quick fixes

Keep dogs safe around the carving station
Carving tools, pumpkin saws, pins, loose seeds, and candles are hazards for curious pets. Keep your dog away from the work area while the stencil is being transferred and cut. Trupanion recommends carving outside while pets remain indoors, or securing them in a separate area with water and a familiar toy. Once the pumpkin is displayed, use an LED light and place it somewhere your dog cannot reach or knock over.

Are there 23 or 24 free dog pumpkin stencils from Better Homes & Gardens?
The current Better Homes & Gardens page lists 23 dog-breed stencils. Older articles and search results may say 24 and include a Bulldog design, but Bulldog is not listed in the current collection.
