Dry, flaky skin is a symptom, not a diagnosis: dry air or over-bathing may be responsible, but parasites, infection, allergies, or illness can also cause scaling. For mild, recent flakes without itching or redness, try gentle dog-specific grooming and monitor your dog; persistent, recurring, or inflamed skin needs a veterinary examination to find the cause.
What dry, flaky skin looks like in dogs
Dry skin may produce white flakes across the back, shoulders, neck, or belly. Your dog may also have a dull coat, mild itchiness, small scales on bedding, or skin that feels rough rather than soft. Moving flakes can sometimes be “walking dandruff” caused by contagious mites, so mention them to your veterinarian.
Flaking is more concerning when it appears with:
- Frequent or intense scratching, licking, chewing, rubbing, or scooting
- Redness, darkened or thickened skin, scabs, sores, bleeding, or discharge
- Greasy skin or an unpleasant odor
- Hair loss, bald patches, or broken hairs
- Raised bumps, pustules, or a spreading rash
- Head shaking or recurrent ear problems
- Pain, lethargy, weight change, increased thirst or urination, or changes in appetite
- Similar skin problems in other pets or an itchy rash in a person at home
These signs suggest that dryness may be only one part of a larger problem.
Common causes of flaky skin
Environmental dryness and grooming
Cold weather, indoor heating, low humidity, poor grooming, or mats can contribute to scaling. Regular brushing may help remove loose scale and prevent mats, but stop if the skin is sore. Avoid cutting tight mats with scissors because you can cut the skin.

Too many baths or the wrong shampoo
Frequent bathing can strip the skin’s protective oils. Human shampoo, including baby shampoo, dish soap, scented products, and some harsh flea shampoos can irritate a dog’s skin because they are not formulated for canine skin. Bathing frequency depends on the dog, coat, season, and health condition.
Allergies
Environmental allergies to pollen, dust mites, or mold commonly cause itching, redness, paw licking, and recurrent ear infections. Food allergies can also cause chronic itchiness and skin problems. A food allergy is assessed through a strict veterinary-directed elimination diet and controlled food challenge, not an allergy test alone.
Fleas, mites, and other parasites
Fleas can cause intense itching, crusting, hair loss, and secondary infections, especially around the lower back, tail base, and thighs. A sensitive dog may react to a single flea bite, so not seeing fleas does not rule out flea allergy. Some mites cause intense itching, crusting, and hair loss; “walking dandruff” may be contagious mites rather than ordinary flakes.
Yeast, bacterial, or fungal infection
Infections can cause greasy flakes, redness, darkened skin, crusts, hair loss, pustules, or a musty smell. Ringworm is a fungal infection that can spread to people or other animals. These problems need veterinary diagnosis and targeted treatment rather than moisturizer alone.

Dietary or medical problems
A nutritionally unbalanced diet can affect coat quality. Thyroid disease, Cushing’s disease, kidney or liver disease, and other systemic or nutritional problems can also affect skin and coat, particularly when flaking occurs with hair loss or whole-body symptoms.
How to treat mild dry skin at home
Home care is reasonable when the flaking is mild and recent, your dog is otherwise comfortable, and there are no sores, odor, significant redness, or hair loss. Monitor closely and contact your veterinarian if signs persist or worsen.
- Check the skin and coat. Part the fur in good light. Look for fleas or flea dirt, redness, scabs, bald patches, odor, greasy areas, sores, and moving flakes. Do not scrape or pick at crusts.
- Reduce unnecessary bathing. Bathe when your dog is dirty or your veterinarian recommends a schedule. Use a gentle, fragrance-free shampoo formulated for dogs; an oatmeal-based or moisturizing veterinary product may soothe uncomplicated dryness. Rinse thoroughly.
- Dry gently and fully. Pat your dog dry with a towel rather than rubbing hard. Avoid hot blow-dryers, which can worsen irritation. If you use a dryer, choose a cool or low-heat setting and keep it moving.
- Improve grooming and indoor comfort. Brush regularly but gently to remove loose flakes and prevent mats. Avoid excessively dry indoor air; a clean, well-maintained humidifier may help if flakes worsen during winter.
- Keep parasite prevention current. Use flea and tick products exactly according to the label, species, weight, and age restrictions. In a multi-pet home, separate animals treated with a topical product until it dries. Treating the dog, other pets, or the environment may be needed to prevent reinfestation; ask your veterinarian for guidance.
- Feed a complete, balanced diet. Avoid abrupt food changes and do not add supplements simply because the coat looks dry. Omega-3 fatty acids may help some dogs as part of longer-term management, but are not a reliable sole treatment for itching or an acute flare. Ask your veterinarian about the product and dose.
What not to put on your dog’s skin
Do not apply concentrated essential oils, tea tree oil, human skin creams, medicated creams, steroid creams, coconut oil, or antifungal products unless your veterinarian has specifically advised it. Dogs may lick their skin, and some ingredients can cause poisoning, stomach upset, or irritation; products may also mask signs and delay diagnosis. Keep human prescription topical medicines away from pets and prevent licking of treated skin.
Do not give human medication, including antihistamines, without veterinary advice. Their effectiveness for canine itching is variable. Do not use a medicated shampoo chosen at random: products for yeast, bacteria, mites, or allergies work differently and should be selected for the problem and used as directed.

When to call the veterinarian
Arrange an examination if flaking persists, returns quickly after bathing, or comes with frequent itching, hair loss, redness, darkened or thickened skin, odor, greasy coat, crusts, pustules, sores, bleeding, discharge, ear problems, pain, or signs of illness. Merck Veterinary Manual advises a visit when excessive itching, hair loss, or red skin persists for more than a day or two. If several pets have scaling or a person develops an itchy rash, tell the veterinarian because some mites can spread between animals and temporarily affect people.
Pain, foul odor, pus, blood, deep crusting, swelling, ulceration, or draining wounds can indicate a deeper infection and should not be managed with moisturizer alone. Seek prompt care for rapidly worsening skin or a dog that seems unwell. Breathing difficulty, collapse, or sudden facial swelling requires emergency care. Contact a veterinarian immediately if your dog reacts to a flea or tick product.

Depending on the examination, a veterinarian may use flea combing or skin scrapings for mites, cytology for bacteria or yeast, fungal testing for ringworm, bacterial culture, blood tests for systemic or hormonal disease, or biopsy if routine tests do not explain the problem. Skin infections and parasites are generally investigated before assuming allergies. Allergy testing does not diagnose food allergy; that requires a strict elimination diet followed by a controlled food challenge.
| Possible cause | Possible veterinary approach |
|---|---|
| Fleas or mites | Appropriate parasite control and, when needed, treatment of other pets and the environment |
| Bacterial or yeast infection | Targeted topical or oral treatment; testing may guide treatment, and culture may be appropriate for some bacterial infections |
| Ringworm or other fungal disease | Veterinary testing and an appropriate treatment plan, with attention to spread to people or animals |
| Environmental allergy | Itch control, treatment of secondary infection, allergen management, and an ongoing allergy plan |
| Food allergy | A strict veterinary-directed elimination diet trial followed by a controlled food challenge |
| Hormonal or other illness | Testing and treatment of the underlying condition |
There is no reliable “best” treatment for all flaky skin. For example, adding oil may do little for mites, while allergy treatment will not eliminate a bacterial infection. Finding the cause prevents weeks of ineffective home treatment.

FAQ
Can I use coconut oil for my dog’s dry skin?
Do not use coconut oil as a routine treatment unless your veterinarian recommends it. It can make the coat greasy, encourage licking, upset the stomach if swallowed, or mask signs of a skin problem.
How often should I bathe a dog with flaky skin?
There is no universal schedule. Bathing frequency depends on the dog, coat, season, and medical condition. Use only a dog-formulated product, rinse thoroughly, and follow your veterinarian’s instructions if your dog has a skin condition.
Does fish oil help dry, flaky skin?
Omega-3 fatty acids may help some dogs as part of longer-term management, but they are not a cure for parasites, infection, or every allergy, and they are rarely effective as the sole treatment for itching. Ask your veterinarian about the product and dose before starting one.
Is dog dandruff contagious?
Simple dry skin is not contagious. Some causes of scaling, including certain mites and fungal infections such as ringworm, can spread to other animals or people. Tell your veterinarian if other pets have symptoms or a person develops an itchy rash.
The Bottom Line
Mild, recent flakes without itching or redness may improve with less frequent bathing, a gentle dog shampoo, careful drying, regular brushing, and a balanced diet. Persistent or recurring scaling—or itching, odor, redness, sores, hair loss, pain, or other illness signs—needs veterinary attention because parasites, infection, allergies, or disease may be responsible.
