Fluoxetine is a prescription SSRI that veterinarians may use for behavioral conditions in dogs. In the United States, Reconcile is FDA-approved for canine separation anxiety alongside a behavior-modification plan; other behavioral uses are extra-label. The FDA label gives a dose range, but only the prescribing veterinarian should determine an individual dog’s dose.
Fluoxetine is not an immediate calming medicine. It may take several weeks to affect behavior, and medication should be used as part of a veterinarian-directed treatment plan.
What is fluoxetine for dogs?
Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, or SSRI. It affects serotonin signaling in the brain and is prescribed by veterinarians for some behavioral conditions.
In the United States, the veterinary product Reconcile is labeled for canine separation anxiety in conjunction with behavior modification. Veterinarians may prescribe fluoxetine extra-label for other behavioral problems, but these are not additional FDA-approved indications for Reconcile.

Medication is one part of care. For separation anxiety, a behavior plan may include gradual departures short enough not to trigger anxiety. Merck Veterinary Manual notes that a behavior-modification protocol can take months.
Conditions veterinarians may treat with fluoxetine
Beyond its labeled use for separation anxiety, Merck Veterinary Manual describes extra-label use for other anxiety disorders, phobias, aggression-related problems, compulsive disorders, excessive arousal, impulsivity, and urine marking. A veterinarian decides whether extra-label treatment is appropriate for an individual dog.
A veterinary assessment helps determine the cause of a behavior problem and whether medication is suitable. Do not start fluoxetine or use another person’s prescription without veterinary direction.

Fluoxetine dosage for dogs
The FDA-approved Reconcile label specifies 1–2 mg/kg by mouth once daily. This is a labeled range, not a direction to calculate or choose a dose for your dog. The prescribing veterinarian determines the individual prescription.

How long does fluoxetine take to work?
Fluoxetine does not work after one dose. Merck Veterinary Manual says it may take 3–4 weeks before it affects behavior, and FDA material describes the therapeutic effect as taking several weeks. Follow up with the prescriber about progress and any dose questions.

For separation anxiety, behavior modification is part of treatment. Gradual departures should be kept short enough not to trigger anxiety, and a behavior protocol may take months.
Side effects of fluoxetine in dogs
Merck Veterinary Manual lists possible adverse effects including reduced appetite, lethargy, sedation, vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, vocalization, agitation, tremors, seizures, and changes in urine frequency. Aggression has also been reported. These are possible effects; the source does not provide frequency estimates.

Drug and supplement safety
Give the veterinarian a complete list of your dog’s prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, and supplements before treatment and when that list changes. Fluoxetine is not the only prescription option for behavioral problems, and treatments are not interchangeable. The FDA announced in 2026 that Tessie (tasipimidine oral solution) is a separate prescription product approved for noise aversion and separation anxiety in dogs. Ask a veterinarian to compare options based on your dog’s diagnosis and needs.
