An online dog-training course can give you a plan, demonstrations and homework without requiring weekly travel to a training facility. The best choice depends on what you need: a free puppy curriculum, help with a specific behavior, instructor feedback, or education aimed at becoming a trainer.
These eight programs differ significantly in price, access and depth. Some are subscriptions, some are lifetime purchases, and some sell individual courses. Prices below are those displayed by providers when checked on August 9, 2026; promotions and terms can change.

1. Pupford Academy: best free starting point
Pupford Academy is an easy place to start if you have a new dog and want to spend nothing before deciding whether online training suits you. Its free library contains more than 20 self-paced courses covering topics such as potty training, crate training, impulse control, barking, reactivity, tricks and puppy preparation. Courses are available through the Pupford app or website.
Pupford describes its method as positive reinforcement: treats, praise or play are used to make desirable behavior more likely to happen again. The short, approachable lessons work well for owners who need one practical task at a time rather than a lengthy theory course.

Watch-out: The free library is broad rather than strictly linear. You may need to select the right course yourself instead of following one complete, prescribed curriculum from start to finish.
2. Dunbar Academy: best all-around training library
Dunbar Academy offers a useful mix of puppy training, household manners, games and behavior advice from Dr. Ian Dunbar and his team. Notable courses include Essential Puppy Training, Behavior Problems Compendium, Reactive Dog Toolkit, Science-Based Dog Training—with Feeling!, Reliability & Games Dog Training Workshop and Simple Solutions for Common Dog Behavior Problems.
The Top Dog Academy membership is listed at $20 per month. Individual courses are also sold separately, with listed prices ranging from $97 for Beyond Treat Training to $500 for an approved continuing-education course. Individual purchases provide lifetime access, while membership-library access lasts only while the subscription is active. Dunbar says members generally cannot download the video content, although accompanying documents may be downloadable. Individual purchases have a 30-day refund policy.
Best for: Owners who want one provider covering puppy skills, manners, games and a range of everyday behavior problems.
Watch-out: The $20 membership is good value if you will use several courses, but it is not a lifetime purchase. Canceling ends access to the membership library.
3. Baxter & Bella: best structured puppy program with live help
Baxter & Bella is designed for owners who want to be told what to teach next. Its lifetime membership is currently listed at $238 and includes more than 75 lessons, hundreds of demonstration videos, printable charts and checklists, games and socialization activities.
The program covers housetraining, manners, obedience, leadership and socialization. The membership description also includes live group Q&A events and live one-on-one video sessions or phone calls with the provider’s team. Many classes are delivered live through Zoom and made available on demand afterward.

4. Dogmantics Academy: best demonstration-heavy positive training
Dogmantics Academy, associated with trainer Emily Larlham of Kikopup, is a strong choice for people who learn by watching exact mechanics. The catalog includes courses and presentations on puppy training, leash walking, communication, relationship-building and weekly manners.

The catalog separates full courses, presentations, seminars and video-on-demand products, so check the product type and length before paying.
Best for: Owners who want visual demonstrations, especially for leash walking, puppy skills and everyday communication.
Watch-out: Products vary greatly in scope. A $15 presentation is not equivalent to the six-week puppy course.
5. Fenzi Dog Sports Academy: best for advanced skills and dog sports
Fenzi Dog Sports Academy is aimed at owners who want more than basic sit, stay and loose-leash walking. Its catalog covers obedience, rally, agility, nosework, confidence, arousal, reactivity, behavior change and other specialized subjects.
Formats include six-week and three-week classes, ten-day workshops, one-hour webinars and on-demand life-skills or pet-skills presentations. Listed prices are $19.95 for webinars, $29.95–$39.95 for workshops and $65–$260 for classes.
Six-week classes use written lectures and video examples released across the session. There is no single live class time, but access and participation are tied to the course dates. Registration levels also matter: lower levels may give you the material without the same instructor feedback or ability to submit dog-specific questions and videos.

6. SpiritDog Academy: best broad subscription library
SpiritDog Academy is useful when you have several unrelated training goals, such as leash pulling, jumping, reactivity, separation-related problems, impulse control and mat work. The membership page currently displays $47 per month or $470 per year.
The subscription includes courses, mini-courses, workshops, webinars and e-books, along with a personal training roadmap, community support and weekly strategy sessions. SpiritDog also advertises access to future courses and updates while the subscription remains active, plus a 30-day money-back period and cancellation at any time.
Best for: Owners who want a searchable library and guidance across multiple household behavior issues.
Watch-out: Academy membership is separate from individually sold lifetime-access classes or masterclass bundles. Buying one does not automatically provide the other.
7. Dog Academy: best beginner-friendly courses with certificates
Dog Academy offers conventional self-paced courses for beginners. Current subjects include puppy training, basic obedience, leash manners, crate training, tricks, separation anxiety and psychiatric service-dog training. Online courses are listed from $29.99 to $349.99, and the provider also advertises a monthly subscription with access to all courses, televet sessions and partner discounts.
According to Dog Academy’s FAQ, a purchased program includes the complete course, a clicker, downloadable or printable materials and a certificate of completion. Each dog being trained must be enrolled separately, although multiple-dog discounts may be available. Refunds are generally available within 30 days if the course has not been started, unless checkout shows different terms.
Best for: Owners who prefer a traditional course structure, downloadable materials and a completion certificate.

8. Karen Pryor Academy: best for serious trainer education
Karen Pryor Academy offers career-oriented education, although some courses are also suitable for highly motivated owners. The catalog lists Dog Trainer Foundations at $495, Dog Trainer Comprehensive at $999, Puppy Start Right for Instructors at $479, KPA LIVE Engage at $199 and KPA LIVE Excel at $399. The separate professional program starts at $5,600, with specific 2026 virtual programs listed at $6,600.
The self-paced Comprehensive course is normally designed to take four to six months and provides eight months of access. It includes personal online coaching, a discussion forum and up to 10 hours of coaching through email, chat, calls and video review.
Do not confuse that course with the KPA professional certification program. The professional program includes scheduled coursework, workshops, hands-on training, video submissions and a certification assessment. How to choose the right course
- Start with the dog’s actual need. A puppy course, a leash-walking course and an aggression intervention are not interchangeable.
- Decide whether you need a curriculum or a library. Baxter & Bella is more prescriptive; Pupford, Dunbar and SpiritDog give you more choice about what to study next.
- Check how access works. Confirm whether you are buying lifetime access, a time-limited class session or a recurring subscription.
- Price the support, not just the videos. If you need feedback on your dog’s timing or body language, look for live Q&A, video review or instructor questions rather than choosing solely by lesson count.
- Read the refund terms before starting. Some providers limit refunds after a course has been opened or enrollment has been completed.

What online courses cannot replace
Online courses work well for skills that can be practiced safely at home: house manners, basic cues, enrichment, cooperative care, leash foundations and general puppy socialization. They cannot let an instructor observe every risk in your home, neighborhood or dog-to-dog interaction.
Get in-person help for serious aggression, bite risk, severe fear, complex separation-related distress or behavior that could have a medical cause. A veterinarian may need to assess pain, illness or medication needs, and a qualified behavior professional can evaluate the dog and environment directly. An online course can supplement that work, but it should not be the entire safety plan.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common misconceptions
“Positive training means never setting boundaries.”
Reward-based training still uses management, prevention, redirection and reinforcement of alternative behaviors. It does not mean allowing a dog to rehearse unsafe or unwanted behavior. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends reward-based methods for dog training and advises against aversive methods.

“A course certificate makes someone a certified dog trainer.”
A provider’s certificate of completion only shows that the learner finished that provider’s course. It is not automatically an independent professional credential. The Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers describes specific eligibility requirements for its CPDT-KA credential, including 300 hours of dog-training experience for applicants.
“Every online membership includes lifetime access.”
It does not. Dunbar’s individual purchases provide lifetime access, but its membership library requires an active subscription. SpiritDog likewise describes Academy access as subscription-based.
“A difficult dog needs a shock, prong or leash correction.”
The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior’s current position recommends reward-based methods for dog training and advises against aversive methods, including electronic collars, prong collars, choke chains, leash corrections and physical or psychological punishment.
FAQ
What is the best free online dog-training course?
Pupford Academy is the strongest free starting point in this group. It offers more than 20 self-paced courses, including puppy preparation, potty training, crate training, barking and basic behavior topics. Its library is broad rather than one strict step-by-step curriculum.
Recommended Free Tools
Are online dog-training courses effective?
They can be effective for skills you can practice consistently and safely, such as basic cues, house manners, leash foundations and enrichment. Results depend on timing, repetition and the suitability of the course. Online instruction is not a substitute for direct assessment when aggression, severe fear, bite risk or complex separation-related distress is involved.
Is a dog-training course certificate a professional certification?
Usually not. A completion certificate confirms that you finished a provider’s course; it does not automatically represent independent professional certification, licensing or authorization to work with serious behavior cases.
Is a subscription or lifetime course better?
A subscription can be cheaper if you want to sample a large library or work on several problems over a short period. Lifetime access is preferable when you expect to return to puppy lessons or behavior material for years. Check exactly what remains available after cancellation and whether live support is included.
The Bottom Line
For a free first step, choose Pupford Academy. Dunbar Academy is the strongest broad library, while Baxter & Bella is better if you want a structured puppy curriculum with live help. Dogmantics suits visual learners, Fenzi suits advanced and sport-focused teams, SpiritDog suits owners with multiple behavior goals, Dog Academy offers the most conventional certificate-based format, and Karen Pryor Academy is the serious education option.
Whichever course you choose, prioritize reward-based instruction, clear access and refund terms, and a level of support that matches your dog’s needs. Bring in a qualified local professional and your veterinarian when the problem involves safety, intense fear, aggression or possible illness.
