Dog Vaccinations Cost: What You’ll Pay

Dog vaccination costs vary by clinic, vaccine, exam fees, and your dog’s age and exposure risk. See example U.S. prices, puppy schedules, common extra charges, and ways to compare clinic totals.

In the U.S., a dog vaccination visit can cost about $20 for a single vaccine at a low-cost clinic to well over $100 when several vaccines, an examination, testing, and other services are combined. Puppies usually cost more in their first year because they need a series of combination vaccines rather than one shot.

There is no standard national price list. Your total depends on the clinic, location, your dog’s age and vaccine history, whether an examination is required, and which vaccines are appropriate for your dog.

Typical dog vaccination costs

Forbes Advisor reports a national benchmark of about $176 for a group of recommended dog vaccines: Bordetella, DAPP, bivalent influenza, leptospirosis, and Lyme disease. This is not a universal price, may not include a separate veterinary examination, and includes vaccines that may not be appropriate for every dog.

Posted U.S. clinic prices illustrate how costs vary. The examples below come from Fulton County Animal Center and Coastal Community Veterinary Clinic; they are not guaranteed national rates.

How much do puppy vaccinations cost?

Puppy vaccination bills are higher because protection against distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, and sometimes parainfluenza is given in a series. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) recommends at least three combination-vaccine doses between 6 and 16 weeks of age, spaced two to four weeks apart.

AAHA recommends two leptospirosis doses, two to four weeks apart, beginning at 12 weeks of age. Rabies vaccination follows the vaccine label and applicable state or local law; most dogs should not receive their first rabies vaccine before 12 weeks.

That means a puppy may have several appointments, and each appointment may have its own examination or clinic fee. Posted low-cost-clinic examples include puppy or young-dog packages priced around $55–$85, while more complete packages may cost about $70. Check what each package covers: one price may include only one visit, while another may include testing, deworming, or a microchip. These are clinic examples, not national averages.

A puppy bill may include

  • At least three DHPP or DAPP doses
  • Two leptospirosis doses
  • Rabies vaccination
  • One or more physical examinations
  • Bordetella if the puppy will attend daycare, training, boarding, or grooming
  • Deworming, fecal testing, or parasite prevention
  • A microchip or certificate fee

Do not assume that a puppy receiving one distemper-parvo shot is finished. Maternal antibodies can interfere with early vaccination, which is why the series continues through at least 16 weeks. See AAHA’s canine vaccination guidelines for the schedule.

How much do adult dog vaccinations cost?

An adult dog that is already vaccinated may need only the vaccines due that year, making the visit less expensive than a puppy’s first-year series. The total can still rise if the clinic requires an examination or if your dog is due for several vaccines based on its health and exposure risk.

An adult visit might include:

  • A physical examination
  • Rabies
  • A DHPP or DAPP booster
  • Annual leptospirosis vaccination
  • Bordetella for boarding or daycare
  • Canine influenza or Lyme vaccination, if appropriate
  • Heartworm or tick-borne disease testing

AAHA recommends a combination-vaccine booster within one year after the initial series, followed by combination-vaccine boosters at three-year intervals. Leptospirosis is given annually after its initial two-dose series. Other vaccines may also be annual, depending on the product and the dog’s exposure risk. See AAHA’s vaccine recommendations.

Which dog vaccines does your dog actually need?

Vaccine selection should be based on veterinary guidance, local disease risk, and your dog’s routine—not simply on the cheapest package. Recommendations can vary by region and individual medical circumstances.

Core vaccines

AAHA’s guidance, updated in 2024, identifies distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, leptospirosis, and rabies as core protection for dogs unless a veterinarian finds a medical reason not to vaccinate. Parainfluenza may be included in the combination vaccine. AAHA’s 2024 update moved leptospirosis into its recommended core category because exposure can occur in many environments, including urban and suburban areas.

Lifestyle or risk-based vaccines

Bordetella, Lyme disease, canine influenza, and rattlesnake toxoid are generally selected according to exposure risk. They may be sensible for a dog that:

A boarding facility may require Bordetella even though it is not a universal core vaccine. A dog with little outdoor or dog-to-dog exposure may not need every lifestyle vaccine. AAHA’s guidelines explain its core and noncore classifications.

Rabies vaccination cost and legal requirements

Rabies is different from most other dog vaccines because vaccination is regulated by state and local law. The required schedule is not identical throughout the U.S.; a county or city may have rules even where there is no broad statewide requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A clinic may charge about $10–$20 for a one-year rabies vaccine at a low-cost facility, or about $25–$40 for a three-year product. A three-year vaccine is not automatically appropriate for a dog receiving its first rabies shot. A clinic may require proof of a valid previous vaccination before using the three-year product.

Ask whether the price includes the rabies certificate and tag. Rabies vaccines should be administered by a veterinarian or under veterinary supervision in accordance with local law. Most dogs should not receive their first rabies vaccine before 12 weeks; the timing and duration also depend on the product and local requirements. See the CDC’s rabies guidance for veterinarians and Rabies Aware for information about state requirements.

Extra charges that can change the final bill

The vaccine price shown in an advertisement may not be the price of the complete visit. Before booking, ask for the total and whether it includes:

  • A required booster
  • A separate examination for each visit

Fulton County Animal Center, for example, lists a $25 examination fee for à-la-carte services, while its packages combine the examination with selected vaccines and tests. Comparing only the individual shot price can therefore produce the wrong result.

How to lower the cost safely

  1. Compare complete totals. Ask for the examination, vaccines, tests, tags, and certificate to be itemized.
  2. Check nonprofit and municipal clinics. Humane societies, animal shelters, and local vaccine events often charge less than full-service veterinary hospitals.
  3. Ask about puppy-series packages. A package may be cheaper than paying a separate examination fee at every visit, but confirm how many doses and appointments it includes.
  4. Bring vaccination records. Records can prevent unnecessary repeat doses and may be needed to qualify for a three-year rabies vaccine.
  5. Match lifestyle vaccines to exposure. Do not automatically buy every vaccine in a package, but do not skip a risk-appropriate vaccine just to reduce the bill.

Routine vaccinations are usually excluded from standard pet insurance. A wellness or preventive-care add-on may reimburse some vaccination costs, but plans commonly have annual or per-service limits. Compare the added premium with the amount you expect to claim. See Forbes Advisor’s wellness-plan analysis.

Common mistakes about vaccination costs

Are all dog vaccines annual?

No. After the initial series and one-year booster, combination-vaccine boosters are generally given at three-year intervals under AAHA guidance. Leptospirosis and many lifestyle vaccines are commonly given annually.

Is Bordetella required for every dog?

No. It is a risk-based vaccine, although a boarding, daycare, or grooming business may require it.

Is the advertised shot price the visit price?

Not necessarily. An examination, testing, certificate, tag, or booster may be added.

Does a puppy need only one distemper-parvo shot?

No. Puppies need repeated doses because maternal antibodies can reduce the effectiveness of early vaccination.

Is leptospirosis still merely optional?

Not under AAHA’s 2024 guidance, which designates it as a recommended core vaccine for dogs. Recommendations can vary internationally and for individual dogs, so ask your veterinarian what applies.

When calling a clinic, ask: “What will I pay in total for the examination and the vaccines my dog is due for, including any required boosters, testing, tags, and certificate fees?” That question produces a more useful estimate than asking for the price of one shot.

FAQ

What is the average cost to vaccinate a dog?

There is no official nationwide average. Forbes Advisor reports about $176 for a group of recommended vaccines, but that group includes vaccines that may not be appropriate for every dog and may not include an examination. Clinic examples show individual vaccine prices from about $10 to $66.50; visits and packages may cost more.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much do puppy shots cost in the first year?

Puppies cost more because they need at least three combination-vaccine doses between 6 and 16 weeks, two leptospirosis doses under AAHA guidance, and a rabies vaccine. Posted low-cost-clinic packages include examples around $55–$85, but the full first-year total depends on appointments and package coverage.

Are dog vaccinations covered by pet insurance?

Standard accident-and-illness pet insurance usually does not cover routine vaccinations. A wellness or preventive-care add-on may reimburse some vaccine costs, subject to its limits and fees.

Which dog vaccines are legally required?

Rabies is the vaccine most commonly governed by law, but requirements vary by state, county, and city. Ask your veterinarian or local animal-control authority about the rules where you live.

The Bottom Line

Plan on paying for the vaccines themselves plus any examination or clinic fee. At the example clinics cited here, a single vaccine may cost roughly $10–$66.50, while puppy packages and multi-vaccine visits commonly run from about $55 to $110 or more. Get an itemized total, bring prior records, and choose lifestyle vaccines according to your dog’s actual exposure.
