Plan for daily activity and mental engagement, positive training, and recurring coat care; meet the individual dog and review health records for both parents before committing.
These dogs are often described as intelligent, affectionate, athletic, and trainable, but those traits are not guaranteed. Their needs depend on the individual dog, age, health, and inherited traits.
What is an Aussiedoodle?
Aussiedoodles—also called Aussiepoos or Australian Shepherd Poodle mixes—are crossbreeds rather than a universally standardized purebred. They are not recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club, and there is no single official breed standard defining their size, coat, colors, or behavior.
The Australian Shepherd may contribute herding instincts, athleticism, alertness, and a desire to work with people. The Poodle may contribute intelligence and a coat that sheds less than some other coats. A puppy can inherit any combination of traits. “Doodle” does not guarantee a particular coat, temperament, or allergy profile.

Aussiedoodle size and appearance
Adult size depends largely on the Poodle parent and the individual dog. PetMD reports Miniature Aussiedoodles can weigh up to 30 pounds and Standard dogs up to 70 pounds; Chewy gives ranges of 15–40 pounds for Miniatures and 40–70 pounds for Standards. These publisher estimates differ and are not guarantees. Ask about the actual parents and adult relatives rather than relying on labels such as “mini” or “standard.”
| Factor | What to expect | What to ask or consider |
|---|---|---|
| Size | Varies with parentage; source estimates for Miniature and Standard dogs differ. | Ask for the parents’ actual height and weight and information about adult relatives. |
| Coat | May be wavy or curly, medium or long, and lower-shedding or noticeably shedding. | Ask to see the parents’ coats and discuss grooming needs. |
| Color | Can vary, including merle and other patterns. | Prioritize health and temperament over fashionable color. |
Coat and shedding are unpredictable, including among littermates. Merle coloring can occur through Australian Shepherd ancestry. Breeding two merle dogs together can increase the risk of serious hearing and eye abnormalities, so ask how the breeder manages inherited risks.
Aussiedoodle temperament
Aussiedoodles are commonly described as intelligent, active, and trainable, but the balance of traits varies with the parents and each dog’s experiences. Genetics, early socialization, training, health, and individual temperament all matter.
Australian Shepherd influence may bring herding behaviors such as watching movement, circling, barking, or trying to nip at heels. Redirect these behaviors through training rather than punishment. Herding and chasing instincts can also create outdoor risks: use a leash or secure fenced area when recall is not reliable.

Teach independence gradually from puppyhood with brief absences, calm departures, food puzzles, and a safe resting area. Do not punish barking, destruction, or house-soiling that happens when a dog is distressed while alone.
Many can live successfully with children and other pets when introductions are controlled and children are taught to handle dogs gently. Supervise interactions, especially with young children; small dogs may be injured by rough handling, while larger dogs can accidentally knock a child over.

Exercise and mental stimulation
Plan on daily movement and mental work. PetMD recommends at least an hour of movement a day as a practical guide, but needs vary with age, health, and the individual dog’s activity level and inherited traits. Pair exercise with training and enrichment.
Useful activities include:
- Walks, hiking, swimming, or fetch, adjusted for age and fitness
- Short reward-based training sessions
- Food puzzles, scatter feeding, and scent games
- Agility foundations, rally, trick training, or other dog activities
- Appropriate opportunities to carry, retrieve, or solve simple tasks
Insufficient activity may show up as barking, chewing, pacing, digging, chasing, or attention-seeking. Exercise alone may not meet a dog’s need for mental engagement. Puppies should not be pushed into repetitive jumping, long-distance running, or strenuous exercise while their joints are developing; ask a veterinarian about suitable activity for the puppy’s age and size.
Training and socialization
These mixes may learn quickly, which makes consistent, humane training important. Use rewards such as food, toys, praise, and access to enjoyable activities. Harsh corrections and intimidation can cause fear or avoidance.
- Start with name recognition, hand targeting, and attention.
- Teach household skills such as house-training, settling on a mat, and leaving objects alone.
- Build a recall with high-value rewards before offering off-leash freedom; use a leash or secure enclosure until recall is reliable.
- Practice calm behavior around visitors, traffic, livestock, children, and other dogs.
- Introduce grooming equipment gradually, rewarding the dog for standing calmly.
Socialization means carefully exposing a puppy to different people, surfaces, sounds, handling, and safe environments. It does not mean forcing a frightened dog into overwhelming situations. Puppy classes can help when they use humane methods and follow appropriate health precautions.
Grooming an Aussiedoodle
Coat maintenance depends on coat texture and length. Curly or dense coats can mat close to the skin, while wavier coats may shed more and still tangle behind the ears, beneath the collar, in the armpits, and around the tail. Brush through to the skin to help prevent mats; a slicker brush can help with longer coats, and a comb can reveal tangles a surface brushing misses.
Great Pet Care recommends brushing at least every other day and clipping curly coats every 8–12 weeks. Treat this as source guidance, not a universal schedule: tailor brushing and professional trims to the dog’s actual coat and condition. Do not yank painful mats; severe matting may need professional grooming.

| Task | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Brushing and combing | At least every other day is Great Pet Care’s guidance; adjust to coat and matting risk. |
| Professional clipping | Great Pet Care suggests every 8–12 weeks for curly coats; the needed interval varies. |
| Nails, ears, and teeth | Include routine nail trimming, ear checks, and dental care in the dog’s care routine. |
Floppy, hairy ears can hold moisture and debris. Head shaking, scratching, redness, odor, or discharge warrants veterinary advice rather than repeated use of leftover ear medication. Have persistent tearing, squinting, cloudiness, or redness around the eyes checked promptly.
Are Aussiedoodles hypoallergenic?
No dog breed is completely hypoallergenic, and an Aussiedoodle’s shedding is not predictable. Some may inherit a lower-shedding coat, while others shed noticeably. Allergens are not limited to loose hair, and a low-shedding coat can still trigger symptoms while needing substantial grooming.
Anyone with allergies should spend time with the individual dog before making a commitment. A reaction to one dog does not reliably predict a reaction to another.
Health concerns
An Aussiedoodle may inherit health risks found in either parent line; being a crossbreed does not guarantee better health. PetMD discusses thyroid disease, sebaceous adenitis, joint dysplasia, and possible bloat risk in Standard dogs. These are concerns to discuss with a veterinarian, not a diagnosis or a prediction that every Aussiedoodle will develop them.
Recommended Free Tools
Bloat, or gastric dilatation-volvulus, is an emergency. A swollen abdomen, repeated unproductive retching, collapse, or severe restlessness requires immediate emergency veterinary care.
Ask breeders for specific, verifiable health-testing records for both parents. OFA explains that CHIC requirements are breed-specific and that a CHIC number means recommended screenings were completed and results made public; it does not mean all results were normal. Check the underlying records rather than relying on “vet checked” or broad claims of hybrid health.

How to choose an Aussiedoodle breeder
Look for a breeder who is transparent about both parent dogs and allows you to see where puppies are raised. Avoid anyone who guarantees adult size, non-shedding coats, perfect temperament, or superior health solely because the puppies are a crossbreed.
- Ask for the actual health-screening records for both sire and dam, and review the results rather than relying on a general claim.
- Ask what testing is appropriate for each parent’s breed, variety, and family history; recommendations are breed-specific.
- Discuss the parents’ temperament, the puppies’ socialization, veterinary care, contract, and return policy.
- Walk away if the seller will not identify the parents, refuses records, keeps puppies in poor conditions, or pressures you to pay quickly.
Feeding and weight management
Feed a complete, balanced food appropriate for the dog’s life stage and size. Portions should be individualized using body condition, activity, growth, and veterinary guidance rather than a universal calorie target. PetMD notes that adult dogs are generally fed twice daily, while puppies may need three to four meals; follow advice suited to your puppy.

Measure meals rather than leaving food available all day unless a veterinarian recommends otherwise. A slow feeder is an optional aid for a dog that gulps meals, not a required breed purchase. Ask a veterinarian before adding supplements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How long do Aussiedoodles live?
Published estimates differ: PetMD gives 10–12 years, while Chewy gives 12–15 years. These are publisher estimates, not a settled breed-specific lifespan statistic. An individual dog’s lifespan depends on many factors, including health and care.
Is an Aussiedoodle right for you?
An Aussiedoodle may suit an owner who wants an interactive, trainable dog and can provide daily activity, companionship, training, and coat care. It may be a poor match for someone seeking a guaranteed low-shedding dog, a pet left alone most of the day, or a companion requiring little exercise or grooming.
Evaluate the individual dog, its parents, and your capacity for ongoing care—not just the breed label or appearance. Consider time for brushing, training, exercise, veterinary care, and gradual alone-time practice.

FAQ
How big do Aussiedoodles get?
Size depends on parentage, and published estimates differ. PetMD reports Miniature Aussiedoodles can weigh up to 30 pounds and Standard dogs up to 70 pounds; Chewy gives ranges of 15–40 pounds for Miniatures and 40–70 pounds for Standards. Ask about the actual parents and adult relatives rather than treating these figures as guarantees.
How long do Aussiedoodles live?
PetMD estimates 10–12 years, while Chewy estimates 12–15 years. These are differing publisher estimates, not a settled breed-specific figure.
Are Aussiedoodles good family dogs?
Some can be good family companions when properly socialized and trained. Their energy and possible herding instincts may be challenging around young children; supervise interactions and teach children to handle dogs gently.
Do Aussiedoodles shed?
They can. Coat texture and shedding vary by dog, so do not assume an Aussiedoodle will be non-shedding or hypoallergenic.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow often does an Aussiedoodle need grooming?
It depends on the coat. Great Pet Care recommends brushing at least every other day and clipping curly coats every 8–12 weeks, but these are guidance rather than a fixed schedule for every dog. Tailor grooming to coat length, texture, and matting.
The Bottom Line
Aussiedoodles are variable, active companion dogs that may need substantial training, daily engagement, and recurring grooming. Meet the individual dog, consider whether its needs fit your household, and ask for verifiable health-screening records for both parents rather than relying on promises about coat or hybrid health.
