Pet Cloning Is Possible, But Should You Do It?

Pet cloning can produce a genetically related puppy or kitten, but it cannot bring back a pet’s memories, personality, or shared history. Learn how the process works, what it costs, and what to weigh before deciding.

Pet cloning is no longer science fiction. Companies commercially offer cloning for dogs and cats, and the resulting animal can share nearly all of the donor pet’s nuclear DNA. But a clone is not the original pet returned to life. It is a new puppy or kitten—a genetic twin born later, with a different pregnancy, upbringing, personality, memories, and relationship with you.

That distinction matters more than the technology itself. The difficult question is not simply whether cloning works, but whether creating one cloned pet justifies the animals, procedures, failed pregnancies, uncertainty, and expense involved.

What pet cloning actually does

Commercial pet cloning uses a technique called somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT). In simplified terms, the nucleus of a cell from the donor pet is placed into an egg cell whose own nucleus has been removed. The reconstructed egg is activated so it begins dividing, creating an embryo. That embryo is then transferred to a surrogate animal, which carries the pregnancy and gives birth.

  1. A veterinarian collects a tissue biopsy from the donor pet.
  2. A laboratory grows cells from that tissue and preserves a viable cell line.
  3. The nucleus of a donor cell is transferred into an enucleated egg.
  4. The reconstructed egg is chemically or electrically activated.
  5. The embryo is transferred to a surrogate.
  6. The surrogate carries the pregnancy and gives birth, sometimes by cesarean section.

The clone receives its donor’s nuclear DNA. However, its mitochondrial DNA comes from the egg donor, so “genetically identical” is not literally the same as having every molecule of genetic material in common. Developmental and epigenetic differences can also affect how the animal develops.

What you get—and what you do not

A cloned dog or cat will normally be the same sex as the donor and may look strikingly similar. That does not mean it will behave like the animal you lost. Genes influence appearance and temperament, but behavior also develops through the pregnancy, early socialization, training, environment, health, and individual experience.

A clone is not guaranteed to share the donor’s:

  • Personality or temperament
  • Habits and preferences
  • Memories or training
  • Attachment to particular people or animals
  • Response to stress
  • Coat pattern or other visible markings

The cloned cat known as Cc demonstrated this clearly: although it had the same nuclear genetic origin as its donor, its coat-color pattern differed. Even when a clone resembles the original closely, that resemblance cannot recreate the history you shared with the first pet.

The clone is also born young. It does not begin life at the donor’s current age, and it does not inherit the donor’s memories. A ten-year-old dog cannot be reproduced as another ten-year-old dog through cloning; the result is a puppy.

How much does pet cloning cost?

ViaGen, a commercial cloning provider, currently lists dog and cat cloning at $50,000 and horse cloning at $85,000. Dog and cat cloning fees are paid in two equal installments, and applicable sales tax may be added. Prices are provider-specific and can change.

Potential charge Listed amount
Dog cloning $50,000
Cat cloning $50,000
Horse cloning $85,000
Genetic preservation $1,600
Annual cell storage $150 per year
Unused biopsy kit $300
Express tissue banking $500
International shipment of cells to the United States Approximately $1,900

ViaGen says its cloning fee is refunded if it cannot produce a healthy clone from a viable preserved sample, while the genetic-preservation fee is not refunded. Its published information also distinguishes between a confirmed cultured cell line and tissue banking performed without first confirming that viable cells can be grown. Read the contract rather than assuming that preservation guarantees cloning.

The timing problem: you need usable cells

Cloning cannot be performed from a photograph, a tuft of hair, or the results of an ordinary DNA test. SCNT requires intact, usable donor cells or nuclei. Tissue collection should therefore be arranged while the pet is alive or immediately after death, using the provider’s instructions.

Post-mortem cloning may be possible when tissue is collected and preserved quickly and correctly. The longer tissue sits at unsuitable temperatures, the greater the risk that the cells will no longer be viable. Experimental research has produced a dog using post-mortem tissue, but that result should not be treated as a guarantee for an individual pet.

If you are considering cloning a seriously ill or elderly animal, discuss preservation with a veterinarian and the provider before an emergency occurs. Genetic preservation alone can also postpone the decision to clone.

Are cloned pets healthy?

Some cloned animals have lived normal, long lives. The 2022 Scientific Reports study “Insights from one thousand cloned dogs” reported long-lived animals, including one born in 2007. The evidence does not support the blanket claim that clones are inherently unhealthy.

It also does not prove that every commercially cloned pet has the same health outlook as a conventionally bred animal. SCNT has historically involved pregnancy loss, developmental abnormalities, stillbirths, and newborn deaths. The procedure is particularly difficult in dogs because of the challenges involved in canine egg maturation and embryo transfer. Researchers continue to discuss epigenetic abnormalities and developmental defects.

The most defensible conclusion is that cloning can produce healthy, long-lived pets, but the reproductive process carries risks and independent long-term data on all commercially cloned companion animals remain limited.

Could the clone inherit the original pet’s diseases?

Yes, a clone can inherit genetic risk carried in the donor’s nuclear genome. Cloning does not remove an inherited mutation simply because the animal is created in a laboratory. If the donor carried a mutation associated with hip dysplasia, heart disease, cancer, or another condition, the clone may carry the same predisposition.

That does not mean the clone will definitely develop the same illness. Disease can also depend on age, diet, infections, environmental exposure, chance, and other biological factors. Conversely, cloning a pet that became ill does not guarantee that the clone will become ill in exactly the same way.

The welfare issue is larger than the final puppy or kitten

The animal shown to the customer is only one part of the process. Cloning may involve:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Egg-donor animals undergoing collection procedures
  • Surrogate mothers undergoing hormone treatment, embryo transfer, pregnancy, and birth
  • Multiple embryos and transfer attempts
  • Failed pregnancies, miscarriages, and stillbirths
  • Newborn animals with developmental problems
  • Veterinary intervention, including cesarean deliveries

It is tempting to repeat a precise claim such as “one clone requires hundreds of animals.” No single ratio applies to every species, laboratory, donor, or definition of an attempt. The sounder criticism is that producing one successful clone can require multiple donor and surrogate animals and may involve substantial biological failure.

The ASPCA has called for a moratorium on the research, promotion, and sale of cloned and bioengineered pets, citing animal-welfare concerns, reported physiological and anatomical problems, and limited public oversight. Commercial providers, by contrast, describe their animals as carefully monitored and say they deliver healthy pets. Those positions should not be treated as equivalent to independent, complete lifetime data.

The arguments in favor

Cloning is not automatically meaningless or irrational. An owner may place exceptional value on preserving a particular genetic line. Genetic preservation can provide time to grieve and decide rather than forcing an immediate choice after a pet’s death. Some cloned animals have been healthy, and research into cloning may contribute to reproductive medicine, conservation, and veterinary science.

There is also a difference between wanting a genetically related animal and expecting an exact replacement. Someone who understands that difference may find cloning personally meaningful and may be prepared to welcome the clone as a separate individual.

These points support offering the choice to informed adults; they do not show that cloning is harmless or ethically preferable.

Questions to answer before paying for cloning

Do not proceed unless you can honestly answer yes to all of the following:

  1. Would I want this animal if its personality were very different? If the answer is no, cloning is unlikely to meet your expectations.
  2. Do I understand the welfare cost? Ask how egg donors and surrogates are housed, treated, bred, monitored, and retired.
  3. Will the provider disclose meaningful numbers? Request information about embryos, transfers, failed pregnancies, abnormal births, cesareans, neonatal deaths, and long-term follow-up.
  4. What exactly is covered? Confirm the refund policy, health guarantee, transport, taxes, storage, and what happens when a sample fails.
  5. Is the tissue viable? A DNA profile or hair sample is not enough. Confirm whether the provider has cultured and verified a usable cell line.
  6. Can I afford the cost without treating it as an emotional guarantee? The fee buys an attempt to create a new animal, not the restoration of your relationship with the former pet.
  7. Have I considered alternatives? Adoption, fostering, supporting a shelter, funding veterinary care, memorializing the pet, or preserving cells without immediately cloning may better match your values.

Common claims that need correcting

Claim What is more accurate
“Cloning brings my pet back.” It creates a new animal with a closely matching nuclear genome. It does not restore consciousness, memories, age, or the former relationship.
“The clone will have exactly the same personality.” Personality is shaped by both genes and experience. Behavioral identity is not guaranteed.
“Every part of the DNA is identical.” Nuclear DNA is intended to match, but mitochondrial DNA comes from the egg donor, and development can differ.
“The clone will be the donor’s current age.” It is born as a puppy, kitten, or other young animal.
“Cloning is impossible for ordinary customers.” Commercial dog and cat cloning is available, although it remains biologically complex and expensive.
“The FDA has declared cloning ethical.” FDA assessments address scientific matters such as animal health and food safety, not every moral question surrounding pet cloning.

So, should you clone your pet?

There is no universal ethical answer, but there is a clear factual standard. You should not clone a pet if you are hoping to recover the original animal’s mind, personality, memories, or bond with you. The procedure cannot do that.

You might reasonably consider it if you genuinely want a new animal sharing the donor’s genetic background, can accept a different personality and appearance, can pay the full cost, and are satisfied with the provider’s answers about surrogate and donor welfare. Even then, you must decide whether the reproductive risks and use of other animals are acceptable to you.

FAQ

Is a cloned pet the same pet as the original?

No. A clone is a new animal with essentially the donor’s nuclear DNA. It is born young and has different memories, experiences, training, and potentially different markings and behavior.

How much does it cost to clone a dog or cat?

ViaGen currently lists dog and cat cloning at $50,000, before possible taxes and additional charges such as tissue preservation, storage, veterinary work, and transport. Prices and policies can change.

Can you clone a pet after it dies?

Sometimes, but success depends heavily on how quickly and properly tissue is collected and preserved. Hair, photographs, and ordinary DNA-test results are not sufficient substitutes for viable cells.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are cloned pets healthy?

Some cloned dogs and cats have been healthy and long-lived, but SCNT carries reproductive and developmental risks. Independent, comprehensive lifetime data on all commercially cloned pets are limited.

The Bottom Line

Pet cloning is real, but it is not resurrection. It can create a genetically related puppy or kitten, yet it cannot recreate the original pet’s identity or your shared history. Before considering it, weigh the $50,000-plus cost, the uncertainty surrounding health and behavior, and the welfare of the egg donors, surrogates, and animals involved in unsuccessful attempts. If you would not welcome the result as a completely new individual, cloning is unlikely to be the right choice.
