When your dog dies, the loss can disrupt daily routines such as meals, walks, and sleep. There is no correct way to grieve or fixed timeline for feeling better. Here are practical steps for aftercare, coping, supporting surviving pets and children, and finding help if you need it.

1. Treat the loss as real grief

Your dog was a member of your household and a daily source of companionship. The relationship does not become less important because your dog was an animal. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that pet loss can cause profound grief, and there is no required level of pain.

Try not to measure your reaction against another person’s. One person may cry constantly, while another may focus on practical tasks or feel emotionally blank. Neither response proves that the bond was stronger or weaker.

2. Expect grief to change from moment to moment

There is no universal timetable for pet grief. If your dog had been ill, you may have started grieving before the death. If the death was sudden, shock may dominate the first days. You might feel relatively steady in the morning and be overwhelmed by a leash, food bowl, or familiar sound later.

The commonly repeated “five stages” are not a schedule that everyone follows in order. Grief is often non-linear: sadness, anger, guilt, relief, longing, and acceptance can appear in different combinations and return unexpectedly. Cornell’s pet-loss resources also emphasize that there is no prescribed timeline.

3. Allow complicated feelings, including relief

After euthanasia or a long illness, relief can exist alongside deep sadness. You may feel relieved that your dog is no longer suffering, or relieved that an exhausting period of caregiving has ended. That does not mean you loved your dog less.

Guilt and second-guessing are also common: Did I wait too long? Did I decide too soon? Did I notice every sign? These questions can be especially painful after euthanasia. If you are stuck replaying the decision, ask your veterinarian to explain the medical reasoning again. A decision made to prevent suffering does not become selfish simply because it hurts.

4. Make after-death arrangements with a veterinarian or qualified provider

If your dog has just died, contact your veterinarian or a reputable pet-aftercare provider. They can explain available options, costs, collection arrangements, and the paperwork required in your area.

Common options include:

  • Private cremation: your dog is cremated separately and the ashes are returned to you.
  • Communal cremation: several animals are cremated together, so individual ashes are generally not returned.
  • Burial: this may be possible on private property, but local rules vary.
  • Animal-removal services: some municipalities or providers offer collection and transportation.

Do not assume that burial is legal everywhere. Burial on public land is typically prohibited, and regulations for private-property burial differ by location. Check with your municipality, veterinarian, or aftercare provider before choosing this option. The ASPCA’s end-of-life guidance provides further practical considerations.

5. If your dog died at home, keep the body cool

While you arrange transport, place your dog’s body in a refrigerator or freezer if possible. If a necropsy may be needed, refrigeration is acceptable, but freezing can interfere with the examination. Contact a veterinarian promptly if you want to investigate an unexpected or possibly infectious death.

If refrigeration is not available, keep the body in the coolest shaded place you can find and pack it with ice. Protect the body from moisture with suitable coverings or containers. Your veterinarian or aftercare provider can give instructions based on the temperature, timing, and cause of death.

6. Ask for practical help instead of handling everything alone

Pet loss can feel isolating, particularly when someone responds with “It was just a dog.” Tell supportive people plainly what happened and make a specific request:

  • “Could you stay with me while I call the veterinarian?”
  • “Can you drive me to the clinic?”
  • “Please handle dinner and phone calls tonight.”
  • “I do not need advice; could you just listen?”

Some people will not know what to say. Giving them a concrete way to help is often easier than waiting for them to guess.

7. Choose a memorial that feels right—not one you are expected to create

Memorializing your dog can give the relationship a deliberate place in your life, but it is optional. You might keep the collar and tags, make a photo book, save a favorite toy, write a letter, create a paw print, plant something, hold a small remembrance gathering, or donate to an animal charity.

You do not need to decide immediately. Put belongings in a box if seeing them is too painful, or leave them where they are if removing them feels worse. There is no single “healthy” way to handle your dog’s things.

8. Explain the death honestly to children

Use direct, age-appropriate language. Say that the dog died rather than using phrases such as “went to sleep,” which can confuse or frighten some children. Explain what you know, acknowledge what you do not know, and allow questions. Children may cry, become quiet, ask the same question repeatedly, or return quickly to play.

Let children participate if they want to: drawing a picture, writing a note, choosing a photograph, attending a remembrance, or saying goodbye. Their understanding and response will vary with age and experience. Cornell’s pet-loss guidance offers additional support for families.

9. Keep a surviving dog’s routine steady

A surviving dog may eat less, sleep differently, search the house, vocalize, seek extra attention, or seem subdued. Some dogs show no obvious change. Scientific evidence is limited on whether dogs experience death in the same way humans do, so avoid assuming that a particular behavior has one definite meaning.

Keep meals, walks, exercise, bedtime, and time alone as consistent as you can. Offer calm companionship without forcing interaction. Monitor eating, drinking, toileting, and behavior, and contact your veterinarian if changes are severe, persistent, or concerning. A sudden loss of appetite can also signal a medical problem rather than grief.

10. Do not assume your surviving dog must see the body

There is no universal requirement that a surviving dog see or smell the body. If the death did not involve an infectious risk and you feel comfortable, you may choose to allow a brief, supervised look. The reaction may be unexpected: the dog might investigate, withdraw, or appear uninterested.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do what is safe and emotionally manageable for the household. If you are unsure about infection risk or handling, ask your veterinarian first. Blue Cross guidance cautions against presenting this as something every dog needs.

11. Give yourself time before adopting another dog

A new dog is not a replacement and cannot recreate the relationship you had. Some households eventually feel ready quickly; others need months or years, and some decide not to adopt again. All of these choices can be valid.

Consider whether everyone in the household genuinely wants another dog and has the time, money, housing, and emotional capacity to care for one. Do not adopt solely to stop the grief or because another person says you should. If you do adopt later, let the new dog become an individual rather than comparing every behavior with the dog who died.

12. Make room for the ordinary disruptions

Grief can affect concentration, sleep, appetite, work, and your ability to complete simple tasks. Lower the bar temporarily: eat something easy, drink water, accept help with errands, and avoid making major decisions while you are overwhelmed unless they are necessary.

Triggers are normal. A walk route, a food brand, a notification from the veterinary clinic, or reaching for a leash may bring the loss back sharply. You are not “starting over” when this happens. It is part of adjusting to a life that has changed.

13. Seek extra support if grief becomes unmanageable or unsafe

Consider a grief counselor, therapist, pet-loss group, or support recommended by your veterinarian if you cannot function, feel persistently overwhelmed, or remain trapped in guilt and despair. A professional can help whether the death was recent or happened months ago.

Cornell’s Pet Loss Support Hotline is 607-218-7457; Cornell notes that hours can vary and that it is not a mental-health crisis hotline. In the United States, call or text 988, or use the 988 Lifeline chat, if you are in emotional distress or having thoughts of suicide. If you may act immediately, call emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department. Outside the U.S., contact your local crisis service.

FAQ

How long does it take to grieve a dog?

There is no standard timeline. Grief may ease gradually, come in waves, or remain intense for longer than people around you expect. A return of sadness after a seemingly good day is normal and does not mean you are failing to recover.

Is it normal to feel relieved after my dog dies?

Yes, particularly after a prolonged illness or euthanasia. Relief may mean that your dog’s suffering or a demanding caregiving period has ended. It can coexist with love, sadness, guilt, and longing.

Should my other dog see the body?

Not necessarily. There is no evidence-based rule that every surviving dog needs this experience. If there is no infectious risk and you are comfortable, you may allow a brief supervised visit, but ask your veterinarian first and be prepared for any reaction.

When should I get help for grief after pet loss?

Seek support if grief is interfering with daily functioning, remains unmanageable, or involves hopelessness or thoughts of self-harm. A therapist, grief counselor, pet-loss group, or veterinarian can help. In the U.S., call or text 988 for immediate emotional-crisis support.
