Persian and Himalayan coats generally need daily grooming, while breeds such as the Turkish Van may need less frequent brushing; individual cats still vary. Compare grooming needs, activity, sociability, health considerations, and coat type before choosing a cat.
The breeds below include cats with recognized longhair varieties as well as breeds with semi-long coats. Breed tendencies are useful clues, not guarantees of an individual cat’s personality or care needs.

1. Persian
The Persian is the classic choice for anyone drawn to an exceptionally long, luxurious coat. Its round face, full body, and gentle nature give it a distinctive appearance, but this is not a wash-and-wear cat. The dense fur can mat quickly and generally requires daily combing and brushing.
Flat-faced Persians may also need regular cleaning around the eyes. If you are buying from a breeder, ask about testing for polycystic kidney disease (PKD). A Persian can suit a quiet household, provided its grooming routine is part of everyday care.

2. Himalayan
The Himalayan combines Persian-type long fur with Siamese-style colorpoint markings. Its darker face, ears, legs, and tail contrast with a paler body, and it has blue eyes. Himalayans are typically docile and affectionate, but their dense coats need daily brushing.
The breed’s shortened facial structure can be associated with narrowed airways and breathing difficulties. Choose a cat with an emphasis on health and functional facial anatomy, not an extremely flat face alone.
3. Maine Coon
Large, shaggy, and unmistakable, the Maine Coon has a long double coat, ear furnishings, and a prominent tail. It is commonly sociable, intelligent, and family-friendly. Many enjoy interactive play and remain playful into adulthood.
Grooming needs vary: weekly combing may be enough for some individuals, while others need grooming several times a week to control shedding and tangles. Pay particular attention around the ruff, belly, hindquarters, and tail. When buying from a breeder, ask about screening for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a known concern in the breed.
4. Ragdoll
Ragdolls have soft semi-long coats, blue eyes, and colorpoint patterns that may be mitted, bicolor, or van. They are generally social, affectionate, and laid-back. Individual cats vary, and no cat should be expected to tolerate being carried or held against its will.
Comb the coat once or twice a week, increasing frequency during seasonal shedding. Ragdolls also have a hereditary risk of HCM, so relevant breeder genetic testing and health records matter when selecting a kitten.
5. RagaMuffin
The RagaMuffin is a large, affectionate breed related to the Ragdoll. Its soft, medium-length fur forms a neck ruff, and its eyes can be many colors rather than only blue. It is known for a people-focused temperament and can suit households looking for a substantial but gentle companion.
Its coat is usually easier to maintain than a Persian’s, but weekly combing is still advisable. Pay particular attention to areas where friction creates tangles, such as beneath the front legs and around the collar.

6. Norwegian Forest Cat
The Norwegian Forest Cat, often called a Wegie, has a dense, water-resistant double coat, a full ruff, tufted ears, and a bushy tail. It is typically intelligent, independent, and active, and appreciates climbing and high viewpoints.
Use weekly brushing as a starting point, then increase it to several sessions a week during heavy spring and fall shedding. A tall, stable cat tree can suit this athletic breed.
7. Siberian
Siberians are powerful medium-to-large cats with a distinctive triple coat made up of guard hair, awn hair, and undercoat. They are generally affectionate, intelligent, and playful, with athleticism that can keep an active household entertained.
Weekly grooming may work outside shedding seasons, but spring and fall molts can require substantially more brushing. Inspect the ruff, armpits, belly, and hind legs to keep loose undercoat from compacting.
8. Birman
The Birman has vivid blue eyes, colorpoint markings, silky intermediate-length fur, and distinctive white feet. Its coat is comparatively easy to manage among long-haired breeds, and the breed is usually sweet, social, affectionate, and people-oriented.
Brushing several times a week helps prevent tangles and gives you a chance to check the coat and skin. The Birman can be a middle ground for someone who wants long fur without a daily grooming commitment.
9. Turkish Angora
The Turkish Angora is a graceful, athletic cat with a silky coat that becomes fuller in some seasons. White cats with blue or odd-colored eyes are strongly associated with the breed, but Turkish Angoras can appear in many colors and patterns.
Brush a few times a week and provide climbing, chasing, and problem-solving opportunities. Turkish Angoras may enjoy affection without wanting to be held continuously; interactive play can be a better way to build a relationship than insisting on lap time.

10. Turkish Van
The Turkish Van is a large, active natural breed associated with the Lake Van region. Its classic van pattern places color mainly on the head and tail, while most of the body is white. The coat changes noticeably between winter and summer and usually mats less readily than many long-haired coats because it lacks a dense undercoat.
Turkish Vans are often interested in water, but swimming is not universal. Never put one in water to test the stereotype. Regular brushing and coat checks are usually sufficient, with extra attention during seasonal changes.
11. Somali
The Somali is the long-haired counterpart of the Abyssinian. Its ticked coat has bands of color along individual hairs, and its full, plumed tail explains the nickname “fox cat.” This active, curious, social breed often wants to participate in household activities.
Weekly brushing is commonly enough for the coat, but the bigger challenge may be providing stimulation. Puzzle feeders, climbing structures, training games, and daily interactive play can help. Somalis can become unhappy if routinely left alone for long periods.
12. Nebelung
The relatively rare Nebelung is a medium-sized long-haired breed with a silky blue coat tipped with silver, producing the misty appearance suggested by its name. It is generally devoted to its household.
Nebelungs can be reserved around strangers and young children, so a calm home and patient introductions may help. Regular combing prevents tangles and mats, especially where the coat is thickest. Give the cat time to approach new people rather than pushing it into social contact.
13. LaPerm
The LaPerm may be short-haired or long-haired; the long-haired variety has a loose, wavy, or curly coat, curled furnishings, and a plumed tail. Confirm the coat variety when choosing a kitten.
Its sparse undercoat often means less visible shedding and fewer mats than a dense straight coat, but it does not eliminate grooming. Gentle combing is useful, and rough brushing can disrupt the curls. LaPerms are typically active, intelligent, affectionate, and people-oriented.

14. Selkirk Rex Longhair
The Selkirk Rex Longhair has a dense, plush coat with a tousled, sheep-like texture. Both long-haired and short-haired varieties exist, and the curls come from a dominant gene. The breed is generally relaxed, affectionate, and family-friendly.
Comb the coat a couple of times a week to remove dead hair and catch developing mats. Work gently: plush curls can hide tangles close to the skin. Regular hands-on grooming also helps a kitten become comfortable with being examined.

The Oriental Longhair belongs to the Siamese breed group and combines a sleek body with a semi-long coat and a broad range of colors and patterns. Its silky coat rarely mats and is generally manageable with weekly brushing.
Companionship is the bigger requirement. Oriental Longhairs are typically lively, intelligent, talkative, social, and strongly attached to their people. Without activity and interaction, they may become bored or mischievous. Consider this breed if you want an involved companion rather than an independent ornament.
How to care for a long-haired cat
Match brushing to the coat
Coat length alone does not determine grooming needs. Dense coats with substantial undercoats, such as those of Persians and Himalayans, can require much more work than silky semi-long coats. Start with an appropriate schedule and adjust it based on what you find during grooming.
Use a comb to reach through the coat rather than brushing only the surface. Check behind the ears, under the front legs, around the neck, across the belly, and at the rear legs, where tangles can develop.
Deal with mats safely
Mats pull on the skin and can be painful. If a tangle does not loosen easily, do not yank it. Avoid household scissors, which can cut skin hidden inside the mat. A professional groomer or veterinarian can remove severe matting more safely, particularly when the cat is distressed or mats are tight against the body.
Remember that long fur is not hypoallergenic
No cat breed is reliably allergen-free. Cat allergies are primarily triggered by proteins such as Fel d 1 found in saliva and skin secretions, rather than by hair length itself. Fur can distribute allergens, but short-haired cats can produce them too.

Low-shedding does not mean no grooming
Curly or silky coats may shed less visibly or mat less easily, but they still need inspection and periodic combing. Coat type, the individual cat, and seasonal changes all affect the care needed.
Look beyond appearance when choosing a cat
Breed tendencies are useful clues, not guarantees. Genetics, early socialization, health, household environment, and individual personality all influence behavior. Meet the cat when possible, ask about its parents and health history, and consider whether you can provide the grooming and attention it is likely to need.
For breeder-bought kittens, ask which health tests are relevant to the breed. Examples include PKD testing in Persians and HCM-related screening in Maine Coons and Ragdolls. A responsible breeder should be willing to discuss results rather than relying on appearance or broad claims such as “healthy lines.”
FAQ
Which long-haired cat breed needs the most grooming?
Persians and Himalayans are among the most demanding because their dense, long coats commonly need daily brushing. Flat-faced individuals may also need regular eye-area care.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What is the easiest long-haired cat to groom?
There is no single easiest breed for every home, but Turkish Vans, Oriental Longhairs, and Birmans generally have coats less prone to severe matting than Persian-type coats. They still need regular inspection and brushing.
Are any long-haired cats hypoallergenic?
No breed is reliably hypoallergenic. Allergies are primarily caused by proteins such as Fel d 1 in saliva and skin secretions, not fur length. Spend time with an individual cat before adopting if allergies are a concern.
Do long-haired cats need professional grooming?
Not always. Regular home grooming can maintain many coats, but professional or veterinary help is safer when mats are tight, extensive, painful, or impossible to remove without pulling the skin. Never use household scissors on a mat.
The Bottom Line
The most beautiful long-haired cat is not necessarily the best match for your home. Choose a Persian or Himalayan only if daily grooming is realistic; consider a Birman, Turkish Van, or Oriental Longhair for a more manageable coat; and consider a Maine Coon, Siberian, Norwegian Forest Cat, or Turkish Angora if you want a larger or more active companion. Whatever the breed, plan for regular coat care, appropriate stimulation, and relevant health screening.
