The Biewer Terrier is a small, long-haired, tri-colored companion dog developed in Germany from Yorkshire Terrier lines. It can suit many homes, including apartments, but its coat, dental care, training, and toy-dog safety need consistent attention.
Before choosing one, consider whether you can provide regular brushing, daily interaction, patient house-training, and careful supervision around children and larger dogs. Individual dogs vary, and breed descriptions cannot predict a particular dog’s health or temperament.

History and breed identity
The Biewer Terrier developed in Germany in the 1980s after tri-colored puppies appeared in the litters of Yorkshire Terrier breeders Werner and Gertrud Biewer. Dogs with the distinctive coloring were selectively bred into a separate breed. The breed entered the AKC Foundation Stock Service in 2014, the Miscellaneous Class in 2019, and received full AKC recognition in January 2021 as a Toy Group breed. Its name is pronounced “Beaver Terrier.”

Although the Biewer shares ancestry with the Yorkshire Terrier, it has its own breed standard and should not be described simply as a Yorkie with unusual coloring.
Appearance and coat
Biewer Terriers are small, elegant toy terriers. The standard describes a long, straight, silky coat without an undercoat, commonly parted down the middle, with a plumed tail and a ponytail on top of the head. The body is generally slightly longer than tall, though a square outline is acceptable. Ears, proportions, coat length, and markings can vary among individual dogs.
The recognized color patterns are black, tan, and white or blue, tan, and white. A show-standard description is an ideal, not a promise about every pet dog.
The coat is often described as low-shedding, but no dog is completely hypoallergenic. Allergens can come from dander, saliva, and other proteins, not just loose hair. Someone with allergies should spend time with individual dogs before committing.

Biewer Terriers are commonly described as playful, devoted, intelligent, and closely bonded to their people. Many enjoy games, walks, and learning tricks. They can be alert and vocal in response to people or sounds; early socialization and positive-reinforcement training can help manage barking.
A small body does not erase terrier traits. A Biewer may be curious, persistent, or quick to react to movement. Temperament depends on genetics, early experiences, training, and the individual dog.

Dogs that are closely attached to their people may need gradual practice being comfortable alone. Barking, accidents, or destructive behavior can have several causes, including stress, insufficient training, or unmet needs; seek veterinary or qualified behavior support if problems persist.
Exercise and mental stimulation
Biewer Terriers benefit from regular, appropriately scaled activity and mental engagement. Walks, indoor play, trick training, hide-and-seek, and food puzzles can help meet those needs. Adjust activity to the dog’s age, health, and energy rather than expecting endurance exercise.

- Use food puzzles or supervised scatter-feeding games.
- Practice tricks and basic training.
- Play interactive games such as fetch or hide-and-seek.
- Try appropriately scaled agility or scent games.
Because the breed is very small, supervise outdoor time and interactions with larger dogs. Use secure, well-fitted walking equipment, and avoid high-risk jumps and falls. These are general small-dog precautions, not claims of a Biewer-specific injury rate.
Training and socialization
Biewers are intelligent and can learn readily, but house-training may take patience. Short, upbeat sessions and consistent rules help prevent barking or avoidance from becoming habits. Use reward-based methods rather than punishment.
- Set up a routine. Use supervision, a pen or gates, and regular toilet opportunities to prevent accidents.
- Keep practice brief and positive. Reward useful behaviors such as coming when called, settling, and walking calmly on a loose leash.
- Practice gentle handling. Gradually pair touching the feet, ears, mouth, and coat with rewards.
- Socialize gradually. Introduce people, calm dogs, household sounds, grooming, and new surfaces without overwhelming the dog.
- Be consistent. Make household rules predictable and reward the behavior you want to see.
Small dogs have small bladders, so a frequent, predictable toilet schedule and immediate rewards for going in the right place can help. If house-training remains difficult, ask a veterinarian about possible medical causes as well as training adjustments.
Living with children and other pets
A Biewer may live well with respectful children, but its small body can be injured by rough handling or a fall. Adults should supervise interactions and teach children to let the dog eat and sleep undisturbed. Provide a safe retreat the dog can use without being followed.

Some Biewers coexist with cats and other dogs, but introductions should be controlled and compatibility depends on the individuals. Supervise play with larger dogs. Keep small pets such as birds and rodents securely separated if the dog shows interest in chasing them.
Grooming requirements
A full-length coat needs daily brushing. Work gently in sections so you reach the skin, and pay attention to friction areas such as behind the ears, armpits, groin, legs, and tail. Mats can pull painfully on the skin.
Many owners choose a shorter puppy cut to reduce brushing demands. A shorter trim still requires routine bathing, nail care, ear and skin checks, and coat maintenance. Bathing frequency depends on coat length, lifestyle, skin condition, and advice from a veterinarian or groomer; there is no single interval that suits every dog. Keep facial hair controlled so it does not interfere with vision or collect food.
Introduce grooming tools gradually and reward calm handling. Arrange professional grooming when needed to maintain the coat safely.

Dental care
Dental prevention deserves special attention in this small breed. The Biewer Terrier Club of America identifies retained baby teeth and tartar buildup as concerns. Start gently getting a puppy used to mouth handling, and brush with a small, soft-bristled dog toothbrush and pet-specific toothpaste. The American Animal Hospital Association identifies daily brushing as the best home measure for reducing plaque and advises against human toothpaste.
Arrange veterinary oral examinations. A retained baby tooth may need veterinary assessment and, in some cases, extraction. Dental chews or diets can be adjuncts, but they do not replace brushing or professional evaluation.

Food and everyday care
Choose a complete, balanced diet appropriate to the dog’s age and health. Portion and feeding frequency should reflect body condition, activity, medical history, and veterinary advice; there is no single formula or schedule that is right for every Biewer. Keep fresh water available and monitor appetite, weight, and stool quality. The breed club notes that sensitive gastrointestinal systems may occur.
Monitor toy-breed puppies closely for changes in appetite, energy, and digestion. Weakness, trembling, unusual sleepiness, vomiting, or refusal to eat warrant prompt veterinary guidance. Do not attempt to treat a puppy with sugar or other home remedies without veterinary advice.
Use ramps or steps where appropriate and supervise around furniture, stairs, and other fall hazards. Ask a veterinarian to tailor preventive care: AAHA guidance distinguishes core vaccines from noncore vaccines chosen according to factors such as lifestyle, location, and exposure risk. Discuss parasite prevention and product selection with a veterinarian as well.
Health and breeder screening
The breed club describes the Biewer as relatively young and hearty, while noting dental concerns and possible gastrointestinal sensitivity. That does not mean an individual dog is risk-free. Persistent diarrhea, poor appetite, breathing difficulty, eye changes, pain, or lethargy should be discussed with a veterinarian.
When evaluating a breeder, ask for verifiable results for the health tests recommended by the national breed club: an eye examination by a board-certified ACVO ophthalmologist, patellar luxation evaluation, Primary Lens Luxation (PLL) DNA testing, and PRCD/PRA-prcd DNA testing. The breed club’s health statement also lists optional tests. Testing can inform breeding decisions but cannot guarantee a disease-free puppy. See the Biewer Terrier Club of America health statement and AKC health-testing information.

A responsible breeder should answer questions, explain the dogs’ living conditions, provide a written contract and return policy, and offer support. Meet the breeder and dogs where possible. Be cautious of sellers who refuse questions or emphasize exceptionally tiny “teacup” puppies; that is not a separate official breed. Consider breed rescue or adoption as well. The Biewer Terrier Club of America code of ethics offers additional context.
Is a Biewer Terrier a good fit?
A Biewer may suit someone seeking a small, affectionate companion who can provide regular activity, patient training, careful dental prevention, and coat care. Apartment living can work when the dog’s needs for interaction and activity are met.
This breed may not suit a household looking for a dog that can be left alone for long periods, needs almost no grooming, or will tolerate rough play. Its small size calls for careful handling, and its coat and teeth need regular attention.
FAQ
How big do Biewer Terriers get?
The breed standard describes dogs at approximately 7–11 inches at the withers and 4–8 pounds. Individual companion dogs may vary.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Are Biewer Terriers hypoallergenic?
No dog is completely hypoallergenic. Biewers may shed lightly, but allergens can come from dander and saliva as well as hair. People with allergies should spend time with individual dogs before adopting or buying one.
How often should I brush a Biewer Terrier?
A full-length coat needs daily brushing to help prevent mats. A shorter puppy cut reduces brushing demands but does not remove the need for routine coat and skin care.
What health tests should I ask a Biewer Terrier breeder about?
Ask for documented eye examination, patellar luxation evaluation, PLL DNA testing, and PRCD/PRA-prcd DNA testing results for the parents. The breed club health statement discusses these and optional tests.
Are Biewer Terriers good with children?
They can live with respectful children, but their small bodies are vulnerable to rough handling and falls. Adults should supervise interactions and teach children safe handling.
