The four strongest established hairless-breed choices to research are the Chinese Crested, Xoloitzcuintli, Peruvian Inca Orchid, and American Hairless Terrier. The American Kennel Club’s hairless-dog page currently lists three—the Xoloitzcuintli, Peruvian Inca Orchid, and American Hairless Terrier—while the Chinese Crested is also an established breed with hairless and coated varieties. The other names sometimes used to make a list of ten are rare regional populations, alternate names, or historical and disputed types, not equivalent choices for most prospective owners.
“Best” depends on your household: a small companion, a size-flexible dog, an active sighthound-type dog, and a trainable terrier have different needs. Here is how the established breeds compare, followed by the rare or disputed types often added to ten-breed lists.
The 4 best-established hairless dog breeds
These are the strongest choices for people seeking an established hairless breed. The labels below describe possible household fit, not a guarantee about an individual dog’s temperament or care needs.
1. Chinese Crested: best small companion
The Chinese Crested is a small companion dog with two varieties: Hairless and Powderpuff. A Hairless Chinese Crested generally has hair on the head, feet, and tail, while the Powderpuff has a full, silky coat. They are varieties of one breed, not separate breeds.

This breed may suit owners looking for an entertaining house dog that enjoys close company. Its small size can work in many homes, but it is not low-maintenance just because much of its body is bare. Exposed skin needs protection from sun and cold and can become dry or irritated.
The Chinese Crested is not completely hypoallergenic. Dog allergies can be triggered by dander, saliva, and other proteins, not just hair. Allergy sufferers should spend time with individual dogs before committing.
2. Xoloitzcuintli: best for size flexibility
The Xoloitzcuintli, also called the Xolo or Mexican Hairless Dog, is one breed with three size varieties: Toy, Miniature, and Standard. It has hairless and coated varieties; a coated Xolo is not a separate breed.
This range gives prospective owners more size options than most hairless breeds. Xolos can be devoted, watchful, and adaptable, but benefit from early socialization and consistent training. Temperament varies by individual, so ask about behavior and meet the dog’s parents when possible.
Hairless Xolos may have missing teeth because the hairlessness trait is associated with dentition differences; coated Xolos normally have a full set of teeth. In Xolos and Chinese Cresteds, the dominant hairless mutation has a lethal double-copy combination, so coated dogs are important in breeding programs.
3. Peruvian Inca Orchid: best for an active household
The Peruvian Inca Orchid is also called the Peruvian Hairless Dog, Viringo, Inca Hairless Dog, or Perro sin pelo del Perú. These are alternate names for the same breed, not separate breeds.
It comes in small, medium, and large size varieties and in hairless or coated form. Lean and athletic, it may suit an active owner better than someone seeking a sedentary lapdog. It needs daily activity, mental engagement, and safe opportunities to move.
The hairless variety may have incomplete dentition. Its skin needs protection from sun, cold, rough surfaces, and excessive drying. The breed should not live outdoors; the American Kennel Club recommends sunscreen on sunny days.

Registry status varies by organization. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale recognizes the breed as the Peruvian Hairless Dog. As of the research checked on August 9, 2026, it is in the AKC Miscellaneous Class; full AKC status is approved to take effect on December 30, 2026.
4. American Hairless Terrier: best trainable terrier
The American Hairless Terrier originated in Louisiana from Rat Terrier stock and was recognized by the AKC in 2016. It has hairless and coated varieties within the same breed.
The AKC lists it at 12–16 inches tall and 12–28 pounds, with a life expectancy of 14–16 years. It may suit owners who want a trainable, playful terrier with moderate exercise needs. Its alert, active terrier character is not purely decorative.
Its hairlessness results from a different mutation than in the Chinese Crested, Xoloitzcuintli, and Peruvian Hairless Dog. The AKC describes it as the only hairless breed with normal dentition. Bare skin can still burn, get scraped, or become cold, so provide appropriate outdoor protection.
6 rare, regional, historical, or disputed hairless types
These names help explain why some lists reach “ten,” but they should not be treated as equally established or readily available alternatives to the four breeds above. Documentation, naming, and registry recognition vary. A rare type mentioned in research is not necessarily a standardized breed or a practical pet-finding option.
5. Argentine Pila Dog
The Argentine Pila is a regional South American hairless dog associated with Argentina. Reliable international breed-registry recognition is limited, and it is not included on the AKC’s current hairless-breed list. A peer-reviewed review discusses it among other hairless dog populations, many of which are rare or not recognized by major registries.
Do not assume a breeder listing guarantees a consistent breed standard or availability in the United States. Ask which registry recognizes the dogs, whether pedigrees can be independently verified, and what health testing has been completed.
6. Hairless Khala
The Hairless Khala is a rare South American hairless type commonly associated with Bolivia. Naming is inconsistent: “Khala,” “Hairless Khala,” “Peruvian Inca Hairless Dog,” and “Argentine Pila” may overlap in registry or website usage.

Before treating a Khala as a separate breed, identify the specific registry, standard, and breeding population being referenced. A name appearing on a registry page does not establish recognition equivalent to that of the Chinese Crested or Xoloitzcuintli.
7. Ecuadorian Hairless Dog
The Ecuadorian Hairless Dog is a rare regional type from Ecuador mentioned in peer-reviewed literature about hairless dog populations. It is not included on the AKC’s current hairless-breed list.
Do not present it as a standardized, widely available breed without naming the specific registry. Anyone considering a dog advertised under this name should investigate the individual dogs, health records, temperament, and the population’s size and consistency.
8. African Hairless Dog
“African Hairless Dog” is better treated as a historical or disputed label than as a currently well-established breed with broad registry recognition. It is sometimes grouped with names such as African Sand Dog, Egyptian Hairless Dog, and Abyssinian Sand Terrier.

Historical references and internet descriptions alone do not establish a stable, obtainable breed. Do not treat it as a practical recommendation unless an active registry, defined standard, and verifiable breeding population can be documented.
9. Abyssinian Sand Terrier
The Abyssinian Sand Terrier is often described online as an ancient African hairless breed. Current evidence does not support presenting it as a mainstream, consistently documented breed comparable to the Chinese Crested or Xoloitzcuintli, and reliable breed-registry recognition is lacking.
It is better treated as a historical or disputed entry than as an ordinary alternative. Be cautious about unsupported claims of ancient lineage, rarity, health, or hypoallergenic qualities.
10. Alternate names and coated varieties often counted as separate breeds
Several entries used to fill out “ten” are alternate names or varieties, not additional breeds:

Counting alternate names or coated varieties as separate breeds inflates a list and can confuse buyers. A coated variety may look different and contribute to responsible breeding, but it remains part of its named breed.

Hairless dogs trade coat maintenance for skin and temperature management. Needs vary by dog, but bare skin can be exposed to sun, cold, abrasions, dryness, acne, dermatitis, and other irritation.
- Sun protection: Limit prolonged direct sun and use dog-specific sun protection or protective clothing recommended by your veterinarian. Bare skin is not naturally protected.
- Cold protection: Sweaters, coats, blankets, or shorter outdoor sessions may be needed in cold weather. Watch for shivering or reluctance to move.
- Bathing: Hairless skin can collect oil and debris. Overbathing or harsh products can worsen dryness, so ask your veterinarian about a suitable routine.
- Skin checks: Look for redness, sores, acne, scabs, persistent itching, infection, or severe dryness. Seek veterinary advice for recurring problems.
- Dental care: Some hairless varieties are prone to incomplete dentition. Brush teeth as directed and have the mouth checked during veterinary visits.
- Nails and ears: Nail trimming and regular ear checks remain necessary. “Hairless” does not mean “grooming-free.”
- Allergy expectations: No dog is guaranteed to be completely hypoallergenic. Dander and saliva can still trigger symptoms.
Do not use human sunscreen, essential oils, or improvised skin treatments without veterinary guidance. A veterinarian can recommend a suitable product and investigate persistent skin problems rather than masking them.
How to choose among the established breeds
| If you want… | Start by researching… | Important reality |
|---|---|---|
| A small, affectionate companion | Chinese Crested | It still needs skin, dental, and temperature care. |
| Multiple size options | Xoloitzcuintli | Temperament and dental traits vary by variety and individual. |
| An athletic dog | Peruvian Inca Orchid | It needs activity and should not live outdoors. |
| A playful, trainable terrier | American Hairless Terrier | It remains a terrier, not a passive ornament. |
When contacting a breeder or rescue, ask about skin history, dental abnormalities, allergies, temperament, sun and cold management, and the dogs’ registry status. For rare types, verify those details before paying a deposit.
FAQ
Are hairless dogs hypoallergenic?
No. Hairless dogs may produce less loose hair, but allergies can be triggered by dander, saliva, and other proteins. Spend time with an individual dog before deciding it is suitable for an allergy sufferer.
What are the most recognized hairless dog breeds?
The four strongest established choices are the Chinese Crested, Xoloitzcuintli, Peruvian Inca Orchid, and American Hairless Terrier. The AKC’s current hairless-dog page lists three of these; the Chinese Crested is also an established breed. Several have hairless and coated varieties.
Do hairless dogs need sunscreen and coats?
Often, yes. Bare skin can sunburn, and hairless dogs can become cold. Use dog-specific products or protective clothing recommended by a veterinarian, and avoid prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures.
Which hairless dog is best for a first-time owner?
There is no universal answer. The Chinese Crested and American Hairless Terrier may be useful starting points to research because they are established breeds, but an individual dog’s temperament and your ability to manage skin care matter more than the label alone.

The best-established hairless dogs to research are the Chinese Crested, Xoloitzcuintli, Peruvian Inca Orchid, and American Hairless Terrier. They differ in size, activity, temperament, and dental traits. Argentine Pila, Hairless Khala, Ecuadorian Hairless Dog, African Hairless Dog, and Abyssinian Sand Terrier belong in a clearly labeled rare or disputed category, not alongside the established breeds as if all ten had equal registry status. Expect regular skin care, sun and cold protection, dental care, and veterinary oversight.
