The Labrador Retriever is friendly, athletic, highly trainable—and considerably more demanding than its reputation as an easy family dog suggests. Labs need daily exercise, structured training, careful weight control, and a household prepared for heavy shedding and enthusiastic behavior.
They were developed as retrieving gun dogs for work on land and in cold water. That background explains much of what owners see at home: a strong desire to carry things, cooperate with people, investigate the environment, and stay active.

These figures are breed guidelines, not targets that every individual dog must match. A dog’s healthy weight is better judged by body condition, muscle, age, and activity than by the scale alone.
History and working purpose
Despite the name, the Labrador Retriever’s historical roots are in Newfoundland, not the Labrador region. Early dogs associated with Newfoundland helped fishermen and hunters retrieve nets, fish, and game from water. The breed was later developed in Britain into the Labrador Retriever recognized today.

The Lab remains a working breed. Retrieving, swimming, hunting, tracking, obedience, agility, dock diving, and other organized activities suit its physical abilities and cooperative nature. A pet Lab does not need to hunt, but it does need outlets that resemble work: carrying, searching, learning, moving, and interacting with its people.
Temperament and family life
Most Labs are affectionate, outgoing, sociable, and eager to work with people. They commonly form close relationships with the whole household rather than choosing only one person. Well-socialized individuals are often welcoming toward visitors and comfortable around other dogs.
That friendliness is a poor fit for someone seeking a dedicated guard dog. A Labrador may bark at something unusual, but guarding is not the breed’s defining purpose.
Labs can be good family dogs, including in homes with children, but “good with children” does not mean “leave unsupervised.” An adult Lab is powerful enough to knock over a toddler, and young dogs may jump, mouth hands, steal objects, or charge through a room. Adults should supervise interactions and teach both the dog and children how to behave safely.
Recommended Free Tools
The most important temperament question is not whether a Lab is generally friendly. It is whether your household can provide predictable exercise, training, supervision, and companionship. A bored or under-exercised Lab can become destructive, noisy, mouthy, or difficult to settle indoors.
Exercise and mental stimulation
Plan on substantial daily activity rather than an occasional walk. The right amount varies with age, health, build, and whether the dog comes from more field-oriented or conformation-oriented breeding, but a Labrador generally needs more than brief bathroom trips around the block.
Useful activities include:
- Brisk walks and hikes appropriate to the dog’s fitness
- Structured retrieving with clear start and stop cues
- Swimming, with close supervision
- Scent games and food puzzles
- Obedience practice and impulse-control exercises
- Tracking, agility, dock diving, hunt tests, or field work
Physical exercise alone may not produce a calm dog. Five to ten minutes of training, a supervised search game, or a puzzle feeder can make a meaningful difference because Labs were bred to use their brains as well as their bodies.

Exercise precautions for puppies
Growing Labradors are large-breed puppies. Let them play, explore, and develop coordination, but avoid forcing prolonged, repetitive impact exercise such as long-distance running. Increase activity gradually and ask your veterinarian for advice if the puppy shows lameness, persistent fatigue, or pain. Keeping a growing Lab lean also reduces unnecessary stress on developing joints.

Many Labs enjoy water, but no dog should automatically be considered water-safe. Supervise around pools, rivers, lakes, currents, cold water, and unstable ice. A life jacket can add safety during boating or difficult water conditions, but it does not replace supervision.
Training a Labrador Retriever
Start reward-based training as soon as the puppy comes home. The American Kennel Club recommends puppy classes and gradual exposure to people, places, surfaces, sounds, and situations during the approximately 7-week-to-4-month socialization period. Socialization should be controlled and positive—not an invitation to overwhelm the puppy.
Prioritize practical manners before advanced tricks:
- Recall: coming promptly when called, first indoors and later in safely enclosed areas.
- Loose-leash walking: especially important because an adult Lab can pull with considerable force.
- Four paws on the floor: reward calm greetings instead of allowing jumping.
- Leave it and drop it: essential for a breed inclined to pick up and carry objects.
- Retrieving politely: teach the dog what may be carried and how to release it.
- Settling: practice resting on a mat or bed after activity.
- Impulse control: work around food, doors, wildlife, water, other dogs, and exciting visitors.
A Lab’s puppy behavior can look harmless at 12 weeks and become a serious management problem at 70 pounds. Training is therefore not merely entertainment; it is part of keeping the dog, household, and public safe.
Coat care and grooming
The Labrador has a short, dense, weather-resistant double coat designed to protect it while retrieving in cold water. Short hair does not mean low shedding. Labs can shed heavily, particularly during seasonal coat changes, and owners may find hair on furniture, clothing, and floors.
Brush regularly, increasing the frequency during heavy shedding periods. A rubber grooming tool or suitable undercoat brush can help remove loose hair. Avoid aggressive scraping that irritates the skin.

Do not shave or routinely clip a Lab’s coat. The coat’s structure provides insulation and weather protection, and trimming is not normal breed grooming. For an indoor companion, bathing about every four to six weeks is one reasonable starting schedule, with extra baths when the dog is genuinely dirty or needs rinsing after a swim. Use dog-formulated shampoo and dry the coat thoroughly.
Add these routine checks:
- Nails: trim or grind regularly. Clicking on hard floors usually means they are too long; a roughly three- to four-week grinder schedule may work for some dogs.
- Teeth: brush frequently, ideally daily, with dog-safe toothpaste.
- Ears: check for wax, debris, odor, redness, or discharge. Floppy ears can have reduced airflow and may be prone to problems.
- Parasites: use veterinarian-recommended flea and tick prevention suited to your dog’s age, health, and location.
Feeding and weight management
Labradors are notably prone to excess weight. Food motivation can be useful during training, but unlimited treats and free-feeding can quickly turn a healthy dog into an overweight one. Obesity increases the risk of reduced mobility, joint disease, exercise intolerance, diabetes, pancreatitis, and other health problems.
Feed a complete diet appropriate for the dog’s life stage. Measure meals rather than estimating portions, count training treats as part of the daily intake, and adjust food when activity or body condition changes. Fresh water should always be available. Discuss major diet changes, supplements, and homemade diets with your veterinarian.
Ask your veterinary team to assess body condition at routine visits. A Lab can fall within the breed’s stated weight range and still carry too much fat, while a muscular working dog may weigh more than a smaller companion without being obese.
Health concerns
Responsible breeding reduces risk but cannot guarantee a perfectly healthy dog. Labrador breeding programs should pay particular attention to:
- Hip dysplasia
- Elbow dysplasia
- Eye disease
- Exercise-induced collapse (EIC)
- Centronuclear myopathy (CNM)
- Progressive retinal atrophy, including the PRCD form
- Dilute-gene status
- Cardiac disease, for which evaluation is also recommended by the Labrador Retriever Club
Exercise-induced collapse
EIC is an inherited disorder that can cause exercise intolerance and collapse after strenuous activity, often in young-adult Labradors. It is associated with an autosomal-recessive genetic variant, so DNA testing helps breeders make informed pairings. A carrier is not the same as an affected dog; a carrier may be used responsibly in a breeding program when the mating is managed to avoid producing affected puppies.

Seek emergency veterinary care immediately if a Lab repeatedly tries to vomit without producing anything, drools excessively, becomes restless, breathes rapidly, develops a swollen or painful abdomen, or suddenly becomes weak or depressed. These can be signs of gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), a life-threatening emergency.

Rapid eating, once-daily feeding, stress, age, body conformation, and family history are among the factors associated with GDV. Common advice such as feeding smaller meals or restricting activity after eating may be discussed as risk management, but no routine feeding plan eliminates the possibility.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a Labrador puppy
Ask for the registered names of both parents and check their results in the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) database. The Labrador Retriever Club’s minimum recommended clearances include:
- OFA hip evaluation
- OFA elbow evaluation
- An eye examination by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist
- EIC testing
- D-locus dilute-gene testing
The breed club additionally recommends or encourages testing for CNM, PRCD-PRA, and cardiac disease. Ask to see the actual results for both parents rather than accepting a vague claim that the dogs are “health tested.” Check close relatives where possible, since family history adds useful context.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA CHIC number is not a health guarantee. OFA explains that it confirms the required tests were completed and made publicly available; it does not mean every result was normal. Read the individual reports.
A responsible breeder should also discuss temperament, working ability, known family health issues, puppy socialization, contracts, and what happens if the owner can no longer keep the dog. Be cautious when a seller focuses primarily on unusual colors, immediate availability, or appearance while avoiding health documentation and questions about the breed’s working needs.
“English Lab,” “American Lab,” and silver Labradors
“English Lab” and “American Lab” are informal descriptions, not separate AKC breeds. They usually refer to different conformation and working styles produced within the single Labrador Retriever breed. The terms may help describe a breeder’s goals, but they do not replace an evaluation of the individual dog’s health, temperament, and energy level.
The AKC recognizes black, chocolate, and yellow Labradors. Silver is not an AKC-recognized standard color. The breed club’s inclusion of dilute-gene testing is a separate health and breeding consideration, not recognition of silver as a fourth standard color.

Is a Labrador Retriever right for you?
A Lab may suit you if you want an affectionate, interactive dog and can provide daily activity, training, companionship, grooming, and careful feeding. It can be an excellent partner for hiking, retrieving, swimming, hunting, obedience, or simply an active family routine.
Think twice if you want a naturally sedentary dog, dislike shedding, need a guard dog, or expect a puppy to entertain itself. A Labrador’s sociable personality makes it pleasant company, but that same attachment means long periods of isolation and inactivity may be difficult for the dog.
The Bottom Line
The Labrador Retriever is an affectionate, versatile dog, but its easygoing reputation should not obscure its needs. Expect a strong, food-motivated, shedding sporting dog that requires daily exercise, early manners training, mental stimulation, and lifelong weight management. Choose breeding stock with verifiable health records, supervise children and water activities, and treat sudden signs of collapse or bloat as emergencies.
FAQ
Are Labrador Retrievers good family dogs?
They often are, thanks to their affectionate and sociable temperament. However, their strength, jumping, mouthing, and high energy require training and supervision around toddlers and children.
How much exercise does a Labrador Retriever need?
Labs need substantial daily exercise, not just occasional short walks. Combine age-appropriate walks, retrieving or swimming, and mental work such as scent games, food puzzles, and obedience training.
Do Labrador Retrievers shed a lot?
Yes. Their short double coat sheds heavily, especially during seasonal shedding periods. Regular brushing helps remove loose hair, but Labs are not a low-shedding or hypoallergenic breed.
What health tests should Labrador parents have?
Look for publicly verifiable hip and elbow evaluations, an eye examination by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist, EIC testing, and D-locus testing. CNM, PRCD-PRA, and cardiac evaluations are also recommended or encouraged by the Labrador Retriever Club.
