11 Animals That Live in the Savanna

Savannas are tropical grasslands with scattered trees, and African examples support elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, gazelles, and predators such as lions. This representative guide explains why savanna wildlife varies by region and why no single list applies everywhere.

Savannas are tropical grasslands with scattered trees, and they support a mix of plant-eaters and predators. African savanna examples include elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, gazelles, lions, and cheetahs; this is a representative list, not a definitive scientific set of exactly eleven species.

Savannas occur in more than one region, including sub-Saharan Africa and northern Australia, and wildlife differs from place to place. Some animals associated with African savannas also use other habitats.

11 representative animals of the African savanna

Animal Role or feeding pattern What to know
African savanna elephant Plant-eater Uses wooded savannas and open grasslands, among other habitats.
Giraffe Plant-eater Occurs in savannas, grasslands, and open woodlands.
African lion Predator Uses savannas as well as other habitats with prey and cover.
Plains zebra Plant-eater A representative of open African savanna and grassland wildlife.
Wildebeest Plant-eater One of the major plant-eaters associated with African grasslands.
Gazelles Plant-eaters Several gazelles are associated with African savanna landscapes.
Cheetah Predator A familiar predator of grassland and savanna settings.
Leopard Predator A familiar African wildlife example; this list does not imply it is restricted to savanna.
African buffalo Plant-eater Often included in popular safari wildlife groupings, though that is not a complete habitat list.
Rhinoceroses Plant-eaters Some are associated with African wildlife, but species and habitat vary.
Other local savanna wildlife Varies Which animals occur depends on the region; this broad category is not a single species.

1. African savanna elephant

The African savanna elephant occurs in wooded savannas and open grasslands, as well as other habitats. Its diet includes grass, leaves, bark, and fruit. By feeding on woody plants, elephants can help keep vegetation open; they may also dig for underground water during the dry season.

2. Giraffe

Giraffes live in savannas, grasslands, and open woodlands, often in places where acacia trees grow. They are the tallest mammals, and their feeding is associated with browsing on vegetation above the ground-level grasses eaten by many other herbivores.

3. African lion

African lions can live in savanna and on plains where prey and sufficient cover are available. They also occupy habitats beyond savanna, so the species should not be treated as exclusive to this biome.

4. Plains zebra

Plains zebras are associated with open savannas in southeastern Africa, including the Serengeti-Mara region. They are among the plant-eaters that make African grasslands recognizable, though the name of a species or population should not be used to imply that every savanna has zebras.

5. Wildebeest

Wildebeest are major plant-eaters of African grassland ecosystems. Their presence alongside other grazing animals is a reminder that savanna wildlife depends on vegetation and varies across places and seasons.

6. Gazelles

Gazelles are another group of plant-eaters associated with African savannas. Different species live in different areas; without identifying a species, it is best not to assume a particular range or migration pattern.

7. Cheetah

Cheetahs are familiar predators of grassland and savanna settings. They are one example of the predators that live among the herbivores of these open landscapes.

8. Leopard

Leopards are often named among well-known African wildlife. Their inclusion in a savanna list does not mean they are savanna specialists or that every leopard lives in the same habitat.

9. African buffalo

African buffalo are familiar large plant-eaters in popular African safari imagery. They are also part of the so-called Big Five, a traditional safari and hunting-derived grouping rather than a scientific or complete list of savanna inhabitants.

10. Rhinoceroses

Rhinoceroses are also included in the Big Five grouping. There are different rhino species, and their habitats differ, so a general reference to rhinoceroses should not be read as a claim that all species live in savanna.

11. Wildlife varies by region

There is no single eleventh species that represents every savanna. The animals present depend on the region and local habitat, so a useful list should distinguish well-known African examples from a universal checklist.

Why savanna animals can live together

Savanna vegetation supports a range of plant-eaters, including zebras, wildebeest, gazelles, and giraffes. Predators such as lions depend on prey and suitable cover, and may also use habitats beyond savanna. These relationships help explain why a savanna is an ecosystem, not simply a setting for a list of famous animals.

Is the Big Five a list of savanna animals?

The Big Five—lion, leopard, African elephant, rhinoceros, and African buffalo—is a familiar safari grouping, but it is not a complete or ecological inventory of savanna wildlife. National Geographic explains that the term originally referred to animals considered dangerous to hunt on foot. Many other animals, including zebras, wildebeest, gazelles, and giraffes, are important parts of African grassland communities.

FAQ

What animals live in the African savanna?

Representative examples include elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, gazelles, lions, and cheetahs. Which species occur depends on the specific region and habitat.

Are all savannas in Africa?

No. Savannas also occur in other regions, including northern Australia. Wildlife differs between regions, so African animals should not be presented as a list for every savanna.

Are lions found only in savannas?

No. Lions use savannas and plains with prey and cover, but they can occupy other habitat types too.

Is the Big Five a complete list of savanna animals?

No. It is a popular safari grouping, not a scientific inventory of the animals that live in savanna ecosystems.
