A pet gate is only useful if it matches the opening, the animal, and the risk you are trying to manage. A 30-inch gate may contain a calm small dog but fail immediately with an athletic jumper. A pressure-mounted gate may work well between rooms but is not the right choice at the top of stairs.

mybest tested 10 popular dog gates for ease of passage, escape prevention, jump protection, and setup. The eight gates below scored from 4.50 to 4.13 out of 5. The rankings are a useful starting point, but the installation location and your pet’s behavior matter as much as the score.

Extra Tall Cat Gate 51"-87" Height Adjustable Pressure Mounted 4 Extensions
  • ✅VERSATILE FIT FOR ANY SPACE: Accommodate any home layout effortlessly! Our gate adjusts from 51" to 87" high (floor to doorframe). 27.56" to 37" wide included extension kit (2 short + 2 long) ensures a perfect, gap-free fit at doorways, stairs, and openings, now made even more secure with the new Stabilizing Brackets.
  • 👌PEACE OF MIND & TOTAL SAFETY: Keep your curious pets and little ones securely contained. Featuring ultra-safe 1.37" bar spacing, this design prevents escape artists from squeezing through or getting their heads trapped.
  • ⚡TOOL-FREE, DAMAGE-FREE INSTALLATION: Set up your gate in 10 minutes, no drill, no tools, no hassle! Pressure mount system installs instantly in hallways, stairways, living rooms, and more without damaging your walls.
  • 👌EASY ONE-HANDED ACCESS: Open from either side with a simple latch release—ideal for busy hands. Although the door opens in a single direction, the unified latch mechanism is accessible from both sides for seamless operation. Plus, rest easy knowing your cat stays safely away from fireplaces, kitchens, and pools.
  • 💪 HEAVY-DUTY STEELY DURABILITY: Get a gate built to last! Unlike flimsy alternatives, our upgraded, thick-walled steel tubing for superior stability and impact resistance. It‘s designed to withstand years of daily use, outperforming and outlasting standard pet gates.

This pressure-mounted, walk-through gate is approximately 39 inches tall and fits openings from 29.5 to 38 inches. Its door can be opened with one hand, held open when needed, or allowed to close automatically. That combination makes it practical for a frequently used doorway where you do not want to step over a low barrier.

Its height should deter many small and medium dogs, but it is not automatically secure against a large dog. A dog with enough space to build up speed may still clear it. Use the gate where its pressure mounting is appropriate, and do not rely on it as a top-of-stairs barrier.

2. North States MyPet Extra-Wide Windsor Arch 4944: best for wide openings

The North States MyPet Extra-Wide Windsor Arch Petgate 4944 scored 4.43 out of 5 and achieved the highest escape-prevention score in the test: 4.84. It is the most suitable pick here for a very wide doorway or room opening.

The current specification lists a 30-inch height, a 38.3–72-inch width range, a 25.5-inch walk-through door, metal construction, and hardware mounting. Pivoting side panels allow it to fit straight or angled walls. It has one-hand operation and a hold-open function.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not confuse hold-open with auto-close: North States says this gate must be closed manually. Its 30-inch height is also a limitation for athletic or determined dogs. If you need more width, the model 4938 extension adds 15 inches, and North States says up to six extensions can be used.

3. Cumbor Auto-Close Safety Gate S7V1: best auto-close pressure gate

The Cumbor S7V1 tied for third with a 4.42 out of 5. It opens in either direction, can be operated one-handed, and closes automatically when released. Those details are useful when your hands are full or when people frequently forget to latch gates behind them.

The tested version is 30.5 inches high and fits openings from 29.7 to 46 inches. It remained stable against small and medium dogs in testing, but its height is not ideal for a particularly athletic jumper. The lower step also creates a tripping risk.

Although this is a pressure-mounted gate, pressure mounting is not a substitute for hardware mounting at the top of stairs. Use the correct installation method for the location rather than choosing convenience over fall protection.

4. Evenflo Barn Door Walk-Thru Gate: best-looking option

The Evenflo Barn Door Walk-Thru Gate also scored 4.42 out of 5. Its wood-and-metal design is less utilitarian than many pet gates, making it a reasonable choice for a doorway in a visible living area.

Evenflo’s current specifications list a 30-inch height and a 29–43-inch fit range. It has a walk-through door, two-way swing, auto-close hinge, and a red/green lock indicator. One extension is included, and the gate can be pressure- or hardware-mounted.

Escape prevention was strong in testing, with a 4.67 score, but jump protection was weaker at 4.00. At 30 inches, it is not a good match for dogs that routinely jump standard gates. Evenflo lists the gate for indoor use and says to follow the installation instructions carefully, particularly when considering stair locations.

  • 55" Extra Tall Design: Standing at 55 inches tall, this tall dog gate is significantly taller than other similar products on the market, effectively preventing cats and dogs from jumping out. Ideal for space division, it effectively blocks access to areas such as kitchens, living rooms, entryways, and doorways.
  • 1.37" Ultra Narrow Spacing: With only 1.37 inches between bars, this ultra-narrow design prevents pets from slipping through or getting stuck, ensuring their safety. The gate also features two spacer rods to minimize side gaps, providing complete protection for your pets.
  • Auto-Close: The Extra-Tall Safety Gate features an auto-close function and a hold-open mechanism that keeps the gate open when positioned beyond 90°, ensuring easy passage. It also offers dual-direction access for added convenience.

5. Carlson 36-inch Extra Tall Walk-Thru Gate 0941: best for taller dogs and cats

The Carlson 0941 scored 4.39 out of 5 and had the best jump-protection score among the tested products: 4.50. Its 36-inch height gives it an advantage over the 30-inch models for dogs that can clear ordinary gates.

The current model fits 29.5–36.5-inch openings and includes a 16.5-inch human walk-through door plus a 7.5-by-7.75-inch small-pet door. The smaller opening can let a cat pass while containing a larger dog, but do not assume it is cat-only: a small or flexible dog may fit through it.

It can be pressure-mounted and includes hardware for wall mounting. Assembly is required, which made setup less convenient in testing. Measure carefully before buying: Carlson warns that the gate does not fit openings from 31 to 34 inches unless the extension configuration creates a valid fit. This is a product where the exact model number and installation configuration matter.

6. BalanceFrom Safety Gate BFSG-291338: best budget walk-through gate

The BalanceFrom BFSG-291338 scored 4.37 out of 5. It is a straightforward pressure-mounted option for openings approximately 29.1–33.8 inches wide.

The 30-inch gate opens from either side, has one-hand release, auto-close, and a double-lock function. It requires no assembly, and the included tool helps tighten the bolts. Those features give it useful everyday convenience without the price or installation work of a larger hardware-mounted gate.

The compromises are its height and bottom step. A 30-inch barrier is not a serious challenge for a dog that already jumps standard gates, and the step can cause trips. Place it where people will not regularly rush through or carry objects over it.

7. North States MyPet Extra Tall and Wide Wire Mesh Wood Petgate 4617A: best for jumpers without drilling

The North States 4617A scored 4.24 out of 5, including 4.50 for jump protection and 4.75 for setup. It stands 37 inches high and fits 29.5–48-inch openings with pressure mounting, so it offers extra height without requiring tools or wall hardware for a standard installation.

The frame is wood with rigid vinyl-coated wire mesh and rubber bumpers. Unlike the other walk-through choices, it has no human door. To pass, you release and slide the gate, which is less convenient in a busy doorway. mybest also found that the small wall-contact area may make it easier for a large dog to dislodge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Most importantly, North States explicitly says not to use this model at the top of stairs. Choose a hardware-mounted gate for that location. The 4617A is better suited to separating rooms on one level where its no-drill setup and extra height are useful.

8. Cumbor Retractable Safety Gate: best for a wide, unobstructed threshold

The Cumbor Retractable Safety Gate scored 4.13 out of 5, the lowest score among these eight but still a potentially useful design for the right doorway.

Rank #3
Snuowu 51"-87" Extra Tall Pet Gate for Cats, 29.5"-40.5" Wide Pressure Mounted No-Drilling Safety Dog Gate, Metal Walk-Thru Barrier for Doorways, Stairs, Kitchens, White
  • 【Adjustable Height 51"-87"】Stop high-jumping "escape artists" for good! Our extra tall cat gate adjusts from 51 to 87 inches high(floor to doorframe). Whether you need a standard barrier or a floor-to-ceiling jump-proof shield, this gate effortlessly secures doorways, stairs, and rooms.
  • 【Suitable for Any Space】Accommodates any layout effortlessly. This gate fits widths from 29.5" to 40.5" with 2 extension kits. Upgraded with new stabilizing brackets to ensure a gap-free, rock‑solid installation at doorways, stairs, and wide openings.
  • 【Ultra-Safe 1.57" Narrow Bar Spacing】Engineered for maximum peace of mind. The dense 1.57-inch spacing prevents curious kittens, puppies, and small pets from squeezing through or experiencing dangerous head entrapment. It’s the ultimate safety design for restricted areas.
  • 【Two Installation Methods】No drills, no tools, no hassle! Our pressure-mount system installs instantly in hallways, stairways, or bedrooms without damaging your walls or paint. Ideal for users who want a security barrier but don't want permanent holes. Prefer something permanent? We’ve included a Hardware Mount kit for maximum stability. Safety, simplified.
  • 【Simple to Operate】Designed for busy hands! Easily operated with one hand, the wide walk-through door allows adults to pass comfortably while providing a safe barrier for pets. This accessible design, paired with a reliable manual locking mechanism, ensures kitchens, fireplaces, and stairs remain off-limits to curious companions.

It is 33 inches high, spans up to 55 inches, and retracts out of the way when open. Because it has no bottom step or floor bar, it preserves a clear threshold and reduces one common tripping problem. It is screw-mounted rather than pressure-mounted, and its one-hand operation made passage relatively easy in testing.

Installation was its weak point, with a setup score of 3.00. The mesh design also demands a realistic assessment of your pet. Do not use it for an animal that climbs, chews, pushes underneath barriers, or can defeat the latch. At 33 inches, it may also be too short for medium dogs and athletic small dogs.

How to choose the right pet gate

1. Measure the actual opening

  1. Measure the width at the exact points where the gate will contact the walls, not just at floor level.
  2. Account for baseboards, molding, banisters, and uneven surfaces.
  3. Compare the measurement with the model’s usable range and extension configuration.
  4. Check for excluded widths. For example, the Carlson 0941 has a current warning covering 31–34-inch openings in some configurations.

The North States 4617A accommodates molding up to 4 inches, but that does not mean every gate will fit around your trim.

2. Match the mounting type to the location

Location Usually appropriate Important caution
Between rooms on one level Pressure-mounted or hardware-mounted Check for wall damage and stability
Top of stairs Hardware-mounted gate designed for the location Do not use a pressure-mounted pet gate
Bottom of stairs Choose a stable gate and consider trip hazards Floor bars can catch feet
Wide, occasionally used opening Retractable or extra-wide hardware-mounted gate Evaluate mesh and latch resistance

Pressure-mounted gates are convenient, but they can shift under force and may leave marks or discoloration. Rubber bumpers can slide, while wall cups may remove paint when removed. Hardware mounting takes more work but is the better choice where a falling gate could cause a serious accident.

3. Consider the individual pet

Height is only one part of escape prevention. Watch how your pet approaches barriers. A dog that calmly stops at a 30-inch gate has different requirements from one that jumps, climbs the mesh, digs underneath, or repeatedly rams the frame.

  • Jumpers: prioritize the 36–39-inch Carlson, North States 4617A, or MidWest models, while still allowing for the dog’s jumping ability and available run-up space.
  • Small dogs: check the spacing and any gaps beneath the gate, not just the overall height.
  • Homes with cats: the Carlson’s small-pet door may be useful, but confirm that a small dog cannot use it.
  • Chewers and climbers: be cautious with retractable mesh and any gate with exposed fabric or flexible sections.
  • Older or mobility-limited people: avoid unnecessary floor bars and choose a door that opens easily without stepping over it.

What mybest’s testing measured

The ranking was not based only on build material or advertised features. mybest tested 10 popular dog gates for four practical criteria:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Ease of passage: how easily a person could get through.
  • Escape prevention: whether the gate shifted or failed under pressure and whether pets could get around it.
  • Jump protection: whether dogs could jump over or through it.
  • Ease of setup: how difficult installation was.

That explains why a lower-ranked retractable gate may still be the best choice for a wide threshold, while a taller pressure-mounted gate may be unsuitable beside stairs. The scores describe tested performance; they do not replace a site-specific safety assessment.

FAQ

What is the best pet gate overall?

The MidWest Steel Pet Gate ranked first in mybest’s testing with a score of 4.50 out of 5. It is about 39 inches high, pressure-mounted, fits 29.5–38-inch openings, and has a one-hand walk-through door with hold-open and auto-close functions.

Can I use a pressure-mounted pet gate at the top of stairs?

No. Use a hardware-mounted gate designed for stair use at the top of stairs. Pressure-mounted gates can shift or fall when pushed, and a bottom threshold can create an additional trip hazard.

Which pet gate is best for a dog that jumps?

The Carlson 36-inch Extra Tall Walk-Thru Gate 0941 had the highest jump-protection score in this test, at 4.50. The 37-inch North States 4617A and approximately 39-inch MidWest gate are also taller choices, but no gate is escape-proof for a determined jumper.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are retractable pet gates safe for dogs?

They can work for calm pets and wide openings when correctly screw-mounted, but they are a poor match for dogs that climb, chew, push under barriers, or defeat latches. The Cumbor Retractable Safety Gate is 33 inches high and spans up to 55 inches, but its setup score was the weakest of the eight.

The Bottom Line

The MidWest Steel Pet Gate is the strongest all-purpose choice in this test, while the North States Windsor Arch 4944 is better for very wide openings and the Carlson 0941 is the more suitable option for taller dogs or homes that need a small-pet door. Choose the North States 4617A only for appropriate one-level locations, not the top of stairs. Before buying, measure the opening at the installation points, confirm the exact model’s usable width, and select hardware mounting wherever a loose gate could cause a serious fall.
