The Boston Terrier is a compact, people-focused companion with a short coat, lively personality, and distinctive tuxedo markings. Its small size makes it adaptable to apartments and houses, but it still needs daily exercise, training, companionship, and careful heat management.

Before choosing one, understand the breed’s short-muzzle risks, eye vulnerability, moderate shedding, and need for regular company. With appropriate care, a Boston Terrier can be an affectionate, entertaining family dog.

Boston Terrier at a glance

Characteristic Typical details
Height About 10–12 inches
Weight 12–25 pounds
Life expectancy Approximately 11–13 years
Coat Short, smooth, and relatively easy to maintain
Exercise needs Moderate; adjust for weather and breathing ability
Breed group AKC Non-Sporting Group
Common nickname “The American Gentleman”

The AKC divides Boston Terriers into three weight classes: under 15 pounds, 15 to under 20 pounds, and 20–25 pounds. A dog’s ideal weight depends on its build and body condition, not only the number on a scale.

Appearance and coat

Boston Terriers have a compact, square-looking body, erect ears, a short tail, large round eyes, and a broad, square head. Their smooth coat is commonly brindle, seal, or black with white markings. Seal may appear black indoors but show a reddish cast in bright light.

The familiar white muzzle band, facial blaze, and white chest create the breed’s formal “tuxedo” appearance. Blue, lilac, merle, solid red, and other colors outside the standard are not standard Boston Terrier colors. Unusual color is not evidence of superior health or temperament.

A breed standard describes an ideal show dog. Individual pet Boston Terriers may vary in body shape, markings, size, and personality.

Boston Terrier temperament

Most Boston Terriers are sociable, playful, intelligent, and strongly attached to their families. Many enjoy meeting people and playing with other dogs when they have been carefully socialized. They can be amusing and energetic indoors without requiring the constant activity of a working breed.

They are companion dogs that generally cope poorly with prolonged isolation. A Boston left alone for much of the day may become anxious, noisy, destructive, or restless. A predictable routine, interaction, and suitable enrichment are important.

Temperament is not guaranteed by breed alone. Genetics, early handling, socialization, training, and previous experiences all matter. Children should be taught to handle the dog gently, and interactions between dogs and young children should be supervised.

Training

Boston Terriers usually learn well with reward-based training. Food rewards, toys, praise, and short training sessions work better than intimidation or harsh physical corrections. Some are eager to please; others are sensitive, distractible, or stubborn when exercises become repetitive.

  1. Begin house-training and basic cues as soon as the puppy comes home.
  2. Practice in short sessions rather than expecting sustained concentration.
  3. Introduce people, calm dogs, surfaces, sounds, grooming, and handling gradually.
  4. Teach a reliable recall, loose-leash walking, “leave it,” and a settle cue.
  5. Use a harness if neck pressure worsens breathing or your veterinarian recommends one.

Puppy classes can help with manners and socialization, provided the class uses humane methods and appropriate vaccination precautions.

Exercise requirements

Exercise needs are usually moderate, but vary between individuals. For many healthy adults, one or two brisk walks with play, sniffing, or training are enough. Food puzzles, scent games, obedience practice, and indoor play can provide mental stimulation without long-distance running.

Do not assume that a small dog can safely exercise hard in hot or humid weather. Boston Terriers have short muzzles, and restricted airways can limit cooling and recovery. Walk during cooler parts of the day, provide water, and keep activity controlled in warm conditions.

Stop exercise and seek veterinary help urgently if your dog shows marked breathing difficulty, weakness, collapse, bluish gums or tongue, or inability to recover normally. Noisy breathing, gagging, regurgitation, difficulty swallowing, poor exercise tolerance, and heat intolerance should not automatically be dismissed as normal breed behavior.

Grooming and dental care

The short coat is easy to maintain but not shed-free. Brush about once a week with a soft-bristle brush or grooming mitt to remove loose hair and distribute skin oils. Bathe when needed or when your veterinarian recommends it.

  • Trim nails regularly so they do not become overgrown or interfere with walking.
  • Brush teeth routinely with dog-safe toothpaste and arrange professional dental care when advised.
  • Check ears and clean them only as needed, with an appropriate product or veterinary guidance.
  • Look at the eyes daily for redness, squinting, discharge, cloudiness, or irritation.

Boston Terriers shed some hair and are not hypoallergenic. Allergens include dander and saliva as well as hair.

Feeding and weight management

Feed a complete diet appropriate for the dog’s age and health. Adjust portions for activity, age, metabolism, body condition, and veterinary guidance. Treats, chews, and table scraps count toward daily calories, so excessive rewards can cause weight gain.

Keep fresh water available at all times. Ask your veterinarian to assess body condition rather than relying only on a target weight. Staying lean is especially important for a short-muzzled dog because excess weight can worsen breathing effort, heat intolerance, and orthopedic strain.

Boston Terrier health concerns

Breed-associated risks do not mean every Boston Terrier will develop these conditions, but they should shape preventive care and questions for a breeder. Important concerns include:

  • Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS): restricted airways can cause noisy breathing, exercise intolerance, overheating, sleep problems, regurgitation, or difficulty swallowing.
  • Eye injuries: prominent eyes are vulnerable to scratches and corneal ulcers. Cataracts and glaucoma can also occur.
  • Patellar luxation: the kneecap can move out of its normal position, sometimes causing skipping or intermittent lameness.
  • Hearing loss: congenital deafness can occur and is identified with a BAER hearing test.
  • Hereditary juvenile cataracts: the HSF4 mutation is associated with early-onset cataracts.
  • Skin allergies: allergic dermatitis may cause itching, recurrent ear problems, or skin infections.
  • Heart and orthopedic disease: congenital or valvular heart disease, intervertebral disc disease, and degenerative joint disease are reported.
  • Cancer: mast cell tumors and other cancers can occur.

Promptly arrange veterinary care for a painful or cloudy eye, sudden squinting, repeated face rubbing, persistent breathing difficulty, fainting, or unexplained exercise intolerance. Eye problems can worsen quickly in this breed.

Choosing a responsible Boston Terrier breeder

The Boston Terrier Club of America recommends health screening breeding dogs for inherited or clinically important problems. Ask for verifiable records for the specific sire and dam rather than accepting a general claim that the litter is “health tested.” The recommended tests include:

Evaluation What it addresses Timing or guidance
Eye examination by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist Eye disease Annual; results can be registered through OFA
Patellar luxation examination Kneecap instability Repeated every two years; OFA registration begins at 12 months
BAER examination Congenital deafness Once after 35 days of age; many breeders test puppies at 6–8 weeks
HSF4 DNA test Hereditary juvenile cataracts Once at any age; results can be registered with OFA

For HSF4, a carrier should be bred only to a clear dog; carriers should not be bred to one another, and affected dogs should not be bred. Ask the breeder to explain the results and verify that they correspond to both parents.

Because airway disease is a significant concern, ask about the parents’ breathing, heat tolerance, exercise recovery, sleep, and any airway procedures. OFA’s Respiratory Function Grading Scheme (RFGS) evaluates breathing through a health questionnaire, physical examination, a brief brisk-walk exercise test, and a post-exercise examination. Grades range from 0 to 3: grades 0 and I are clinically unaffected, while grades II and III are clinically affected.

OFA added Boston Terriers to the breeds eligible for official RFGS examinations and certification in April 2026. Its page also retains older text listing only Pugs, Bulldogs, and French Bulldogs as eligible. Confirm current Boston Terrier eligibility and registration status directly with OFA before relying on a result. A grade cannot guarantee that a puppy will never develop airway disease.

A responsible breeder should let you meet the mother, show where puppies are raised, provide veterinary records and a contract, explain socialization, and accept the dog back or help rehome it if necessary. AKC registration by itself is not proof of health testing or responsible breeding. Boston Terriers can have difficult births, so planned breeding requires veterinary preparation and an emergency-delivery plan.

Is a Boston Terrier right for you?

A Boston Terrier may suit someone looking for a friendly, interactive companion that needs moderate daily exercise and relatively simple coat care. The breed can adapt well to smaller homes when its exercise, training, and social needs are met.

It may be a poor match if you need a dog for strenuous runs in hot weather, one that can remain alone for most of the day, or one whose respiratory and eye symptoms you cannot monitor carefully. Budget for routine veterinary care and the possibility of specialist treatment for airway, eye, orthopedic, or dental problems.

FAQ

Do Boston Terriers shed?

Yes. They shed some hair despite their short coat. Weekly brushing can reduce loose hair, but the breed is not non-shedding.

Are Boston Terriers hypoallergenic?

No. Boston Terriers are not hypoallergenic. People with dog allergies may react to dander, saliva, and other allergens, not just visible hair.

Can Boston Terriers exercise in hot weather?

They should exercise cautiously in heat and humidity because short muzzles can restrict cooling and breathing. Use short, gentle outings during cooler hours and seek urgent veterinary help for collapse, blue gums, severe breathing trouble, or abnormal recovery.

Are snoring and noisy breathing normal in Boston Terriers?

They are common but should not automatically be considered harmless. Noisy breathing, gagging, regurgitation, heat intolerance, or poor exercise recovery can indicate airway disease and should be discussed with a veterinarian.

The Bottom Line

Boston Terriers are affectionate, entertaining companions with manageable grooming and moderate exercise needs. Owners should provide companionship, maintain a healthy weight, protect the dog from heat, monitor its prominent eyes, and take breathing changes seriously. If buying a puppy, verify the parents’ eye, patella, hearing, and HSF4 testing, and ask detailed questions about airway health.
