Its active ingredient, oclacitinib, can provide relief without being a corticosteroid, but it does not cure the allergy or replace an investigation into fleas, infections, parasites, food reactions, or other causes of itchy skin.
The correct dose depends on your dog’s weight and the product prescribed. Give Apoquel only under veterinary direction, especially if your dog is young, has recurrent infections, has a history of cancer, or takes other immune-suppressing medicines.
What is Apoquel?
Apoquel is the brand name for oclacitinib, an oral Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor and immunomodulator. It reduces signaling from cytokines involved in itch and allergic inflammation. It is not a steroid and is not an antihistamine, according to the Apoquel prescribing information.
In the United States, Apoquel is FDA-approved for dogs at least 12 months old to control itching associated with allergic dermatitis and to control atopic dermatitis. It is available as standard tablets and flavored Apoquel Chewable tablets, both in 3.6 mg, 5.4 mg, and 16 mg strengths.

Apoquel controls a symptom—itching—but does not remove the trigger. A dog that keeps scratching while taking it may have fleas, a bacterial or yeast infection, mites, a food allergy, or another skin condition that needs separate treatment.
How Apoquel is used
Veterinarians commonly prescribe Apoquel for allergic skin disease, including atopic dermatitis and other forms of allergic dermatitis. It may help reduce:
- Scratching, chewing, or licking
- Red, inflamed skin linked to allergy
- Paw licking and rubbing of the face or ears
- Self-trauma caused by persistent itching
It can work relatively quickly. In the controlled allergic-dermatitis study included in the prescribing information, 86.4% of Apoquel-treated dogs achieved the study’s predefined reduction in itch after one week, compared with 42.5% of placebo-treated dogs. Individual results vary, and a poor response does not necessarily mean the medicine has failed; an infection or incorrect underlying diagnosis may be maintaining the itch. Apoquel dosage for dogs
The FDA-labeled regimen for standard Apoquel and Apoquel Chewable is:
0.4–0.6 mg per kilogram by mouth twice daily for up to 14 days, followed by once daily for maintenance.

Do not continue the twice-daily schedule beyond 14 days unless your veterinarian specifically tells you to do so. Do not change to once-daily treatment, increase the dose, or restart an old prescription based only on your dog’s symptoms.
How to give Apoquel
Standard Apoquel tablets may be given with or without food. Give each dose as prescribed and try to keep doses evenly spaced. If your dog vomits shortly after a dose, or if you are unsure whether the tablet was swallowed, call the prescribing clinic before giving another dose.
The chewable form is flavored. That can make dosing easier, but it also means it may be attractive to dogs that find and eat medication. Keep it in its original packaging and in a locked or otherwise inaccessible place.

Less common or serious concerns
Because oclacitinib affects immune signaling, the prescribing information warns that it may increase susceptibility to infection, including demodicosis, and may worsen some neoplastic conditions. Post-approval reports have included:

- Demodicosis
- Seizures
- Vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or loss of appetite
- Benign, malignant, and unclassified tumors, including lymphoma
Post-approval reports do not show how frequently an event occurs or prove that Apoquel caused a particular dog’s illness. They are still important information for risk assessment. When Apoquel may not be appropriate
Apoquel should not be used in:
- Dogs younger than 12 months
- Dogs with serious infections
- Breeding dogs
- Pregnant dogs
- Lactating dogs
Your veterinarian should carefully weigh the risks and benefits if your dog has recurrent serious infections, recurrent demodicosis, or a history of cancer or another neoplastic condition. Make sure the clinic knows about all medicines and supplements your dog receives.
The safety of combining Apoquel with glucocorticoids, cyclosporine, or other systemic immunosuppressive drugs has not been evaluated in the product labeling. What if your dog eats too much Apoquel?
Call a veterinarian or emergency veterinary hospital immediately if your dog receives more than prescribed. Do not wait for symptoms, particularly after an entire bottle of flavored chewable tablets is missing. The FDA reported 259 overdose reports in dogs and 64 in cats as of April 2, 2026, since Apoquel Chewable was approved in June 2023. These reports do not predict what will happen to an individual pet. - Your dog’s current weight
- The tablet strength and product type
- The estimated number of tablets eaten
- When the ingestion occurred
- The medication packaging
Possible overdose signs include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, red eyes, and swelling around the eyes. Effects involving the heart, brain, kidneys, or liver have also been reported. Signs often appear within 24 hours, but a dog that looks normal still needs prompt professional advice.

Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional instructs you to. Store Apoquel away from dogs, cats, and children. If your dog scavenges medication, ask whether the unflavored tablet would be a safer option than the chewable form.
