Trazodone is a prescription antidepressant that veterinarians often use extra-label in dogs to reduce anxiety, fear, agitation, or stress. It may help with thunderstorms, fireworks, travel, veterinary visits, grooming, hospitalization, or postoperative confinement. It is not a painkiller, and it does not replace behavior modification or treatment for an underlying medical problem.
Because trazodone can interact with other medications and may affect dogs differently, give it only according to a veterinarian’s instructions. Never convert a human prescription or an internet dosage chart into a dose for your dog.
What is trazodone?
Trazodone is a serotonin antagonist and reuptake inhibitor. It was developed as a human antidepressant, but veterinarians commonly prescribe it to dogs for behavioral and situational problems. Its use for dogs is extra-label, meaning it is not FDA-approved as a canine behavioral medication but may be prescribed legally by a veterinarian within a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship.
The goal is usually to reduce fear and anxiety rather than simply make a dog unconscious or immobile. A dog that appears quieter is not necessarily feeling comfortable, so medication is often combined with gradual behavior modification, environmental management, and treatment of any medical condition contributing to the behavior.

Why might a veterinarian prescribe trazodone for a dog?
Common veterinary uses include:
- Fear during veterinary examinations, grooming, travel, or hospitalization
- Noise phobias caused by fireworks, thunderstorms, or construction
- Separation-related anxiety
- Anxiety and agitation during postoperative confinement
- Fear aggression or compulsive behavior as part of a broader treatment plan
- Short-term calming before a procedure or stressful event
Some dogs receive trazodone only before predictable events. Others take it on a regular schedule for ongoing anxiety, sometimes alongside a longer-term behavioral medication. The choice depends on the dog’s diagnosis, temperament, health, and response.
How quickly does trazodone work?
For a one-time stressful event, effects commonly begin in about one to two hours. A randomized, double-blind clinical trial in dogs with veterinary-visit anxiety found that a dose given 90 minutes before transport reduced observable stress during the visit. That study’s dose should not be treated as a universal prescription.
Dogs taking trazodone for chronic anxiety may need several weeks before the full behavioral benefit becomes clear. Trazodone is relatively short-acting, but its effects may last longer in dogs with liver or kidney disease.

- Liver and kidney function
- Heart disease, seizure history, glaucoma, and bleeding risk
- Other prescriptions, supplements, and over-the-counter products
- How the dog responded to previous doses
The Merck Veterinary Manual lists a reference range of 2–7.5 mg/kg by mouth every 8–24 hours as needed for certain behavioral uses, with a listed maximum of 19.5 mg/kg in 24 hours. This is a professional reference range, not a dosing instruction for owners. Published studies have used different protocols, including a single pre-transport dose and individualized regimens for postoperative confinement.
Do not calculate a dose from your dog’s weight alone. Human tablets come in different strengths, and a dose appropriate for a veterinary visit may not be appropriate for daily treatment. Do not split, repeat, or increase a tablet unless the prescribing veterinarian specifically tells you to.
How to give trazodone
- Follow the prescription label. Give the exact amount at the stated interval.
- Plan ahead for stressful events. If prescribed for travel, fireworks, grooming, or a veterinary visit, the label may instruct you to give it about one to two hours beforehand.
- Consider a test dose. A veterinarian may recommend trying it on a quiet day before the important event. Some dogs become too sleepy; others become restless or more reactive.
- Give it with or without food. If your dog becomes nauseated or vomits after an empty-stomach dose, ask whether future doses should be given with food.
- Do not double a missed dose. Give it when remembered unless it is nearly time for the next dose. If it is close to the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and resume the normal schedule.
Ask the veterinarian before crushing tablets, changing the formulation, or substituting a compounded liquid. Keep the medication secured so your dog cannot chew through the bottle.
Common side effects
Possible side effects include:
- Sleepiness, sedation, or lethargy
- Staggering, weakness, or poor coordination
- Vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, or colitis
- Reduced appetite
- Panting or dilated pupils
- Restlessness, hyperactivity, or agitation
- Increased anxiety or behavioral disinhibition
- Worsening reactivity or aggression
Mild sleepiness or stomach upset may improve as the dog adjusts, but contact the prescribing veterinarian if the dog is difficult to wake, cannot stand normally, vomits repeatedly, or seems substantially more anxious or aggressive. Do not give another dose until you have received advice if the reaction is severe or unexpected.

Serious reactions and serotonin syndrome
Rare but serious problems reported with trazodone include seizures, abnormal heart rhythms, liver toxicity, priapism, and serotonin toxicity. The risk of serotonin syndrome rises when trazodone is combined with other medications that affect serotonin.
Tell the veterinarian about every medication and supplement your dog receives. Potentially important combinations include certain SSRIs, tricyclic antidepressants, MAO inhibitors, metoclopramide, some pain medications, and other drugs that cause sedation or affect the central nervous system. Gabapentin is sometimes prescribed with trazodone, but the combination can increase sedation and is not automatically safe for every dog.
Seek emergency veterinary care immediately for agitation with tremors, abnormal muscle movements, heavy drooling, vomiting or diarrhea, fever or overheating, dilated pupils, disorientation, seizures, trouble breathing, collapse, or coma. These can be signs of serotonin toxicity or another serious reaction.

An extra dose or access to a pill bottle is an urgent veterinary-toxicity question. Do not wait for symptoms, and do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian or animal poison-control professional specifically directs you to do so.

Questions to ask your veterinarian
- Is trazodone intended for a single event or regular use?
- When should I give the first dose, and should I test it on a quiet day?
- What signs mean the dose is too strong or causing an opposite reaction?
- Can my dog take it with current prescriptions, supplements, or flea and tick products?
- What should I do if my dog vomits or misses a dose?
- Should medication be combined with training or another behavior treatment?
FAQ
Can I give my dog human trazodone?
Only if a veterinarian has prescribed that product and dose for your dog. Trazodone is a human medication used extra-label in dogs, and the correct amount depends on much more than weight.
How long before a stressful event should trazodone be given?
Veterinarians often recommend giving it about one to two hours beforehand, but follow the timing on your dog’s prescription. A trial dose may be useful because some dogs become overly sedated while others become restless.
Can trazodone and gabapentin be given together?
Sometimes veterinarians prescribe both, but the combination can increase sedation and is not automatically safe. Use the combination only under veterinary direction.
What should I do if my dog accidentally eats trazodone?
Call an emergency veterinarian or animal poison-control service immediately rather than waiting for symptoms or inducing vomiting. Possible signs include extreme sedation, staggering, vomiting, tremors, overheating, seizures, breathing problems, and collapse.

Trazodone can be useful for short-term or ongoing anxiety in dogs, but it is not a one-size-fits-all sedative. Give it only as prescribed, test a first dose before an important event when your veterinarian recommends it, report unexpected behavior or severe sedation, and treat any accidental ingestion as urgent. For persistent anxiety, medication works best alongside veterinary assessment and a structured behavior plan.
