Actress Angie Harmon filed a civil lawsuit after her dog, Oliver, was fatally shot during an Instacart grocery delivery at her Charlotte, North Carolina, home. The complaint names both the delivery driver, Christopher Anthoney Reid, and Maplebear Inc., the company that does business as Instacart.

The lawsuit describes a disputed encounter. Reid told police that Oliver attacked him and that he fired one shot in self-defense. Harmon’s complaint alleges trespassing, negligence and other claims. No criminal charges were reported, and the civil allegations were not court findings.

What happened to Angie Harmon’s dog?

Harmon ordered groceries for her family’s Easter celebration. According to the complaint, the delivery took place on March 30, 2024, at her home in Charlotte.

Oliver was shot outside the home and later died at a veterinary office. Harmon’s complaint says another dog was also at the property. Police reports cited in contemporary coverage said that other dog did not attack the delivery driver.

Reid told Charlotte-Mecklenburg police that Oliver attacked him and that he fired a single shot in self-defense. Police said the shot mortally wounded Oliver. Reports at the time said investigators filed no criminal charges and were not seeking additional parties.

Those accounts leave the central facts disputed. The civil complaint presents Harmon’s allegations; Reid’s account to police presents his stated justification for firing. A court has not publicly determined which account is legally correct.

Who did Harmon sue?

Harmon filed the complaint electronically in Mecklenburg County Superior Court on May 10, 2024. She sued:

  • Christopher Anthoney Reid, identified in the complaint as the delivery driver who arrived at the home; and
  • Maplebear Inc., doing business as Instacart.

Harmon filed individually and on behalf of her daughters. One minor daughter is identified in the complaint as “Jane Doe.”

The Instacart shopper-identity issue

One part of the lawsuit concerns the shopper information shown in the Instacart app. Harmon alleged that the app displayed a shopper named “Merle” and a profile photograph of an older woman, while a younger man—identified in the complaint as Reid—arrived to deliver the order.

That allegation is part of the lawsuit and should not be described as a court-established finding that Reid used a fake identity. The complaint also uses the identity discrepancy to support claims against Instacart involving hiring, supervision, retention and alleged misrepresentation.

What claims are in the lawsuit?

Harmon’s complaint asserts several civil claims. In general terms, they include:

Claim What Harmon alleged
Trespassing That the driver entered or remained on the property without the legal right to do so.
Negligence and gross negligence That Reid’s conduct fell below the required standard of care, including allegations concerning the shooting.
Invasion of privacy That the events at the home invaded Harmon’s or her family’s privacy.
Conversion or wrongful taking of property That Oliver was wrongfully taken or treated as property in a manner that caused legal harm.
Intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress That the incident caused severe emotional harm, including distress to Harmon and her daughters.
Claims against Instacart That Maplebear/Instacart was negligent in hiring, supervising or retaining the driver, and made or allowed misrepresentations connected with the delivery.

These are allegations in a civil pleading. Filing a complaint does not establish that any defendant is liable.

How much money did Harmon seek?

The complaint requested monetary damages in an amount to be determined. Contemporary reports said Harmon was seeking more than $25,000, along with other relief available under the claims.

North Carolina law treats companion animals differently from human family members in damage claims, and the value of a lawsuit involving a pet can depend on the specific causes of action and evidence of economic and emotional harm. The complaint’s requested amount is not the same as a judgment or an indication of what a court will award.

What did Instacart say?

Instacart said the shopper’s account was immediately suspended after the incident and later said he was permanently deactivated or banned from the platform. The company also said it had no tolerance for violence and was cooperating with law enforcement.

Those platform actions are separate from the question of whether Instacart can be held legally responsible for the driver’s conduct. That issue would depend on the evidence, the applicable North Carolina law and the court’s rulings.

Has the Angie Harmon dog-shooting lawsuit been settled?

The latest status described in the supplied reporting is unresolved. In a May 20, 2025 report, attorneys for Instacart and Reid said the case had been settled in September 2024. Harmon’s attorney, however, said she was “not in agreement” with the settlement terms and that the parties were still negotiating language.

That report did not establish a completed settlement or final judgment. Accordingly, it is more accurate to say that the defendants’ attorneys claimed a settlement had been reached, while Harmon’s attorney disputed that the matter was complete. A later court filing would be needed to confirm the case’s final status.

Why the case matters to dog owners

The incident highlights practical safety questions for households that use grocery and package-delivery services:

  1. Keep pets separated during deliveries. Even friendly dogs can react unpredictably when a stranger enters a property or approaches a door.
  2. Check the shopper profile. If the person who arrives does not match the app’s name or photograph, pet owners can avoid opening the door and contact the platform through the order.
  3. Use delivery instructions. Requesting that groceries be left at a gate, porch or other location can reduce direct contact between a driver and a pet.
  4. Document an incident quickly. Save app records, delivery messages, security-camera footage, veterinary records and photographs. Those materials may matter in an insurance claim, police investigation or civil case.
  5. Report safety concerns to the platform. A platform’s account suspension or investigation is not a substitute for legal advice, but prompt reporting creates a record of what happened.

Pet owners should avoid assuming that a tragic outcome automatically establishes criminal wrongdoing or civil liability. The legal result depends on the evidence and the claims that can be proved.
