A raccoon attacked an infant inside his family’s home in Cassia County, Idaho, on December 23, 2024, according to an account published by Idaho Fish and Game four days later. The child was in a carrier when his mother heard a loud noise, went to investigate, and found the animal attacking him.
The mother grabbed the raccoon and stopped the attack. The infant was taken to Cassia Regional Hospital in Burley and later transferred to a hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. Officials did not disclose the child’s exact injuries or later medical outcome.
What happened inside the Idaho home
Idaho Fish and Game said the mother had just returned home and was settling in when she heard a loud noise. She went to check on her infant and found a raccoon attacking the baby in his carrier. She physically grabbed the animal, ending the attack.
The father later returned to the home with a Cassia County sheriff’s deputy. They located and killed the raccoon inside the house. Fish and Game reported that no other raccoons were found and said it was confident the animal killed inside the home was the one involved in the attack.

Why the case prompted a wildlife response
Idaho Fish and Game activated its Wildlife Human Attack Response Team, or WHART. The team’s role was to help protect the public and responders, locate or control the animal, and document the incident.
The agency described raccoon attacks on people as extremely rare. It said raccoons generally avoid humans but may become aggressive when threatened.

The negative rabies test is an important detail: officials did not find that this raccoon was rabid. Idaho Fish and Game said that only one case of raccoon rabies had been documented in Idaho at the time of its report. That limited history does not make every bite or scratch harmless. Any direct contact with a wild mammal should be treated seriously.

How to reduce the chance of a raccoon entering a home
Idaho Fish and Game recommends removing food sources and securing potential entryways to help reduce raccoon visits and entry into homes.
| Risk | Practical prevention |
|---|---|
| Outdoor food | Keep garbage cans securely closed, never feed raccoons, and bring pet food indoors after feeding. |
| Bird feed | Remove bird feeders or secure them; clean up spilled seed. |
| Fruit and garden waste | Pick up fallen or rotten fruit. |
| Shelter and access | Close sheds and outbuildings and seal potential entryways around the home. |
| Pets | Feed pets indoors. |
Do not seal an opening if a raccoon may still be inside. Contact local animal control, a wildlife professional, or the relevant state wildlife agency for guidance on safe removal and exclusion.

What to do if a raccoon is inside
- Move people and pets away. Put distance between the animal and children, dogs, cats, and anyone who could be bitten or scratched.
- Do not corner or handle it. A raccoon that feels threatened may defend itself. Do not try to pick it up, chase it, or use a pet to drive it out.
- Create an exit only if it is safe. If the animal is in a room with a clear exterior door and no person or pet is at risk, leave the route open and move away. Keep interior doors closed so it cannot travel through the house.
- Call for help. Contact local animal control or wildlife authorities, especially if the raccoon is injured, behaving unusually, cannot leave, or has made contact with a person or pet.
- Report contact promptly. A bite, scratch, or possible exposure should be reported to a medical professional or public health authority. For a pet exposure, call a veterinarian promptly and follow local reporting requirements.
Unusual behavior can have several causes, including injury, being trapped, or illness. It is not possible to diagnose rabies from appearance alone, and a raccoon should not be approached to judge whether it is “acting rabid.”
What this incident does—and does not—show
This was a serious but unusual event, not evidence that raccoons commonly attack babies or enter occupied homes. The official account did not establish how the animal entered, did not disclose the infant’s exact injuries, and did not identify rabies as the cause. The useful takeaway for households is prevention: remove food sources, secure buildings, inspect for potential entryways, and keep children and pets away from wildlife.

The Bottom Line
The Idaho case involved a rare indoor raccoon attack, and the animal tested negative for rabies. Families can lower wildlife risks by securing food and trash, feeding pets indoors, closing outbuildings, sealing potential entryways, and calling professionals rather than confronting a raccoon themselves.
