Termites rarely announce themselves. Subterranean termites usually stay in soil, mud tubes, wall voids, or the inside of wood, so visible damage may be advanced before you see an insect. That matters in a pet-owning home: termite evidence can be easy to disturb, while some treatment products require strict precautions around dogs, cats, birds, and other animals.

Use the signs below as a screening guide, not a diagnosis. A single clue may have another explanation, but termites found indoors, mud tubes attached to the structure, or unexplained frass should justify a licensed pest inspection.

9 early warning signs of termites

1. Winged termites appearing indoors

Winged reproductive termites, called alates or swarmers, may emerge from wall voids, floors, ceilings, window frames, or other concealed spaces during a dispersal flight. Finding them inside is one of the strongest early warnings of termite activity connected to the building.

Do not confuse every winged insect with a termite. Termites have straight antennae, a thick waist, and two pairs of wings that are approximately equal in length. Ants have elbowed antennae, a narrow pinched waist, and unequal-length wings. Save one insect in a sealed container or photograph it rather than crushing every specimen before an inspection.

  • Installs IN minutes: place stakes in the ground 2 to 3 feet away from your home and no more than 10 feet apart
  • Pop-up indicator: check the stakes for termite activity when the pop-up indicator is seen

2. Small piles of discarded wings

After swarmers land, they shed their wings. Look on windowsills, floors, door frames, beneath light sources, and in spider webs. A few loose wings outdoors do not prove that the house is infested, but wings found inside—especially near trim, windows, or a ceiling—deserve investigation.

Keep curious pets away from the area while you document it. The wings themselves are not a diagnosis, and vacuuming them up before taking a photograph can remove useful evidence.

3. Mud tubes on the foundation or crawl-space supports

Subterranean termites build earthen shelter tubes to travel between soil and wood while maintaining a protected, moist route. Common locations include:

  • Foundation and basement walls
  • Crawl-space piers and support posts
  • Sill plates, joists, and floor framing
  • Door and window trim
  • Utility penetrations and cracks near the foundation

Tubes are often around pencil-width, although their size varies. An apparently empty tube does not prove the termites are gone. Termites may abandon one section and forage through another route.

Do not let a dog or cat chew at a tube or damaged wood. Photograph it in place and have the connection between the soil and structure evaluated.

Trelona ATBS Annual Bait Stations
  • Trelona ATBS Annual Bait Stations give ongoing structural protection through colony elimination; however, conditions such as competing insects, floods, the presence of alternative food sources, and cold weather may alter complete structural protection

4. Live termites in damaged wood

Opening a shelter tube or examining compromised wood may reveal creamy-white, wingless worker termites or darker-headed soldiers. Live termites actively foraging in wood are reliable evidence of current activity.

Avoid extensive probing, prying, or removing pieces of structural wood. If you can safely see insects in an exposed, nonstructural area, photograph them and note the exact location. Keep pets and children away from loose debris and arrange a professional inspection.

5. Pellet-like droppings or frass

Drywood termites expel small, hard fecal pellets called frass through tiny kick-out holes. Pellets may collect on floors, windowsills, furniture, or directly below infested wood. This type of evidence is more characteristic of drywood termites than subterranean termites, but the pellets and the wood opening need identification together.

Frass is not the same as ordinary sawdust from drilling, sanding, or carpentry. It can also be confused with debris from other insects. Photograph the pile with a coin or ruler for scale, and avoid allowing pets to investigate or ingest it.

6. Hollow-sounding, soft, or easily punctured wood

Termites often tunnel inside wood while leaving a thin outer surface intact. Affected wood may:

  • INSTALLS IN MINUTES: Place stakes in the ground 2 to 3 feet away from your home and no more than 10 feet apart.
  • POP-UP INDICATOR: Check the stakes for termite activity when the pop-up indicator is seen.
  • Sound hollow when tapped
  • Feel unusually soft
  • Break or crumble at the surface
  • Be easy to puncture
  • Contain soil or mud-like material in the galleries

Subterranean termite galleries commonly follow the grain. This clue is not conclusive: rot, carpenter ants, wood-boring beetles, and prolonged moisture can create similar damage. Do not hand a damaged splinter or piece of wood to a pet as a toy.

7. Bubbling, blistering, darkening, or peeling paint

Termite activity can be associated with darkened or blistered wood and paint that bubbles or peels, particularly where moisture is trapped beneath the surface. However, these changes are just as likely to involve a plumbing leak, high humidity, water intrusion, or failing paint.

Check for corroborating evidence nearby: mud tubes, kick-out holes, frass, soft wood, or a persistent moisture source. If the affected area is near a pet door, food station, crate, or sleeping area, move those items away while the cause is investigated.

8. Buckling floors or suddenly sticking doors and windows

Wood can swell, bend, buckle, or lose strength as a result of termite damage and associated moisture. Possible locations include flooring, paneling, molding, frames, and structural supports. A door or window that suddenly sticks can also result from seasonal humidity, a plumbing leak, foundation movement, or an installation problem.

Treat this as a reason to look for supporting signs rather than proof of termites. Restrict pets from sagging floors, loose trim, or areas where weakened wood could shed splinters until the structure is checked.

  • Does Not Include Spider Tool To Open It

9. Moisture and wood-to-soil contact around the house

These conditions do not prove termites are present, but they make the property more favorable to an infestation or provide concealed access:

  • Leaking gutters, downspouts, pipes, outdoor faucets, or air-conditioning lines
  • Poor grading that leaves soil wet against the foundation
  • Wood siding, steps, decks, fences, or landscape timbers touching soil or the structure
  • Mulch, firewood, cardboard, and other wood debris beside the house
  • Blocked foundation or crawl-space vents
  • Unsealed cracks and utility penetrations

Repair leaks, clear gutters, improve drainage, remove wood debris, keep vents clear, and separate exposed wood from soil where practical. These measures reduce favorable conditions; they do not eliminate an established colony.

What to do if you find termite evidence

  1. Photograph everything in place. Take wide shots showing the room or exterior location, then close-ups of insects, wings, tubes, frass, holes, and damaged wood. Add a ruler or coin for scale.
  2. Do not paint over, seal, or destroy the evidence. Do not automatically scrape off a mud tube. An inspector may need to determine whether it connects to soil or wood and whether activity is present elsewhere.
  3. Inspect accessible areas safely. Check the basement, crawl space, garage, foundation walls, plumbing penetrations, door and window trim, and areas with leaks or drainage problems. Do not enter an unsafe crawl space or dismantle structural components.
  4. Protect your pets during the inspection. Keep animals away from damaged wood, frass, loose debris, and any opened wall or floor area. If treatment is proposed, ask exactly which rooms, surfaces, and outdoor areas must be vacated and for how long.
  5. Arrange a licensed pest-management inspection. Indoor swarmers, discarded wings indoors, live termites, attached mud tubes, and unexplained frass all warrant professional evaluation. In the United States, check the relevant state authority for pest-control licensing requirements.
  6. Ask for a written plan. It should identify the suspected termite type, evidence of activity or damage, treatment method, areas covered, warranty terms, retreatment conditions, and any inspection fees.
  7. Follow pesticide directions exactly. A spray labeled to kill termites it contacts is not necessarily labeled to protect a structure or eliminate a colony. Never apply a product off-label, and never return a pet to a treated area until the product label and applicator provide the required clearance instructions.

Common mistakes and misleading assumptions

Claim What is more accurate
“A few wings prove the whole house is infested.” Outdoor swarmers may come from a nearby colony. Wings or swarmers indoors still warrant investigation.
“An empty mud tube means the termites are gone.” Termites can abandon one section while using another route.
“Termites are easy to spot.” Subterranean termites commonly remain concealed in soil, tubes, wall voids, or wood.
“Any sawdust-like pile is termite droppings.” Drywood frass consists of characteristic pellets and must be distinguished from sawdust and other debris.
“A contact spray solves the infestation.” A contact product may kill exposed insects without protecting the structure or eliminating the colony.
“Routine pesticide spraying is always the best prevention.” Moisture control, maintenance, inspection, and label-compliant treatment are more appropriate than automatic spraying.

How to choose a termite professional

Get the company’s license information and ask whether the inspection is free, what areas are included, and whether inaccessible spaces are excluded. Be cautious about pressure to sign immediately, claims that every home requires the same treatment, or vague promises that a product will “kill the colony.”

Compare written proposals rather than just prices. A lower quote may cover less of the structure or provide different warranty and retreatment terms. Tell the technician that pets live in the home and ask about application locations, ventilation, re-entry, food and water-bowl removal, aquarium protection, and disposal of contaminated materials. The product label and the licensed applicator’s instructions take priority over general advice.

FAQ

Can termites harm dogs or cats directly?

Termites do not normally attack healthy pets, but animals should not be allowed to eat termites, frass, treated wood, or pesticide residues. The greater household concern is weakened wood and unsafe exposure during treatment. Keep pets away from the evidence and follow the product label and applicator’s re-entry instructions.

Does finding one termite mean my house is infested?

Not necessarily. A single insect can be accidentally carried indoors, and outdoor swarmers may come from a nearby colony. However, live termites indoors, repeated sightings, discarded wings indoors, mud tubes attached to the structure, or frass should prompt a professional inspection.

Should I break open a mud tube to see if termites are inside?

Avoid unnecessary damage, especially on structural wood or in a crawl space. An empty tube does not prove inactivity, and breaking it can destroy useful evidence. Photograph the tube and let an inspector assess it.

What should I do with my pets if the house needs termite treatment?

Ask the licensed applicator for written instructions specific to the product and treatment area. Remove pets, food, water bowls, bedding, and toys when instructed; keep animals out for the full required period; and do not rely on smell or surface dryness as a safety test. Aquariums, birds, reptiles, and small mammals may require additional precautions.

The Bottom Line

Indoor swarmers, discarded wings, mud tubes, live termites, frass, and damaged wood are the most useful warning signs. Bubbling paint, sticking doors, and moisture problems are less specific, but they should not be ignored when other evidence is present. Photograph what you find, avoid disturbing it, correct leaks and drainage problems, keep pets away from affected areas, and have a licensed professional identify the pest before choosing a treatment.
