A Doxiepoo is a Dachshund–Poodle mix, also called a Doxiedoodle, Dachshundpoo, Dachshundoodle, or Doxiepoodle. It can be affectionate, bright, funny, and energetic, but it is not a standardized breed, so puppies can differ in size, coat, body shape, and temperament. Some dogs marketed as Doxiepoos may also have additional breeds in their ancestry, particularly when parentage is undocumented.

When assessing a Doxiepoo, focus on the individual dog’s structure and behavior, the sizes and health histories of both parents, and how consistently the dog is trained and socialized.

Doxiepoo at a glance

Characteristic What to expect
Parent breeds Dachshund and Poodle
Breed status Mixed breed; no universally accepted breed standard
Adult size Small to medium, depending on the parent varieties
Coat Smooth, long, wiry, wavy, curly, or somewhere between
Shedding Variable; a Poodle-like coat may shed less, but this is not guaranteed
Activity needs Regular moderate exercise plus mental stimulation
Training Often clever and responsive, but may also be independent or stubborn
Potential lifespan Published estimates commonly fall around 10–15 years; there is no established Doxiepoo lifespan standard

These are broad estimates rather than specifications. A Doxiepoo’s genetics can resemble either parent more strongly, and a designer-mix name does not predict the dog as precisely as documented parentage and observation can.

Size and appearance

Doxiepoos can vary considerably because Dachshunds come in miniature and standard sizes, while Poodles may be Toy, Miniature, or Standard. For context, the American Kennel Club describes Toy Poodles as under 10 inches tall, Miniature Poodles as 10–15 inches, and Standard Poodles as over 15 inches. Miniature Dachshunds weigh 11 pounds or less, while standard Dachshunds generally weigh 16–32 pounds.

That range among the parents makes a single “correct” Doxiepoo weight impossible to give. Adult size is influenced by both parents, the puppy’s sex, its generation, and individual genetics. Ask to see the puppy’s parents and obtain their actual adult measurements rather than relying on labels such as “toy” or “mini Doxiepoo.”

Possible features include:

  • A long or moderately elongated body
  • Short legs, although leg length can vary
  • Drop ears
  • A muzzle resembling the Dachshund, the Poodle, or a mixture of both
  • Solid, two-color, or multicolored fur

A long-backed, short-legged build deserves particular care because it may increase concern about spinal strain. Not every Doxiepoo has the classic Dachshund shape, so assess the dog’s actual proportions rather than assuming its structure from the name.

Coat, shedding, and grooming

A Doxiepoo may have a smooth or long Dachshund-like coat, a wiry texture, a wavy coat, or tight Poodle-like curls. Coat type is not reliably predictable in every puppy. Even puppies with similar-looking coats can develop different adult textures as they mature.

Grooming needs depend on the coat:

  • Smooth coats: Usually need less brushing, although nails, ears, teeth, and skin still require routine care.
  • Long, wavy, or curly coats: Need regular, thorough brushing to prevent mats. A dense coat can tangle close to the skin where mats are easy to miss.
  • Longer full coats: May need professional trimming roughly every four to eight weeks, depending on the desired length and the dog’s coat growth.

Introduce brushing, paw handling, ear checks, nail trimming, and clipper noise gradually while the dog is young. Grooming is not only cosmetic: neglected mats can pull on the skin, hide irritation, and make handling painful.

Is a Doxiepoo hypoallergenic?

No. No dog is reliably allergy-free. Dog allergens are found in substances including dander, saliva, and urine, and a home with a dog marketed as “hypoallergenic” does not consistently have lower allergen levels than a home with another dog. A Doxiepoo with a Poodle-like coat may shed less, but that does not make it a safe choice for someone with a dog allergy.

If allergies are a concern, spend time with the specific adult dog or puppy and discuss the risk with an allergy specialist before bringing the dog home. Coat labels are not a guarantee.

Temperament and behavior

The Dachshund contributes a history as an alert hunting dog; the Poodle contributes high intelligence, activity, and people-oriented behavior. A Doxiepoo may therefore be affectionate and playful while also being vocal, determined, distractible, or strongly interested in chasing moving animals.

Common possibilities include:

  • Quick learning and curiosity
  • Strong attachment to family members
  • Alert barking at people, sounds, or activity outside
  • Independence or stubbornness when a reward is not convincing
  • Prey drive toward small pets or outdoor wildlife
  • Difficulty settling if exercise, training, and companionship are inadequate

These are tendencies, not promises. Mixed-breed puppies do not automatically receive the “best” traits of both parents, and early experiences, inherited temperament, socialization, and training all matter.

A Doxiepoo may live well with children and other pets, but introductions should be managed individually. Supervise every interaction with young children. A child should not pick up, squeeze, ride, or wrestle with a small or long-backed dog. If the dog shows fear, guarding, or chasing behavior, use a qualified reward-based trainer or veterinary behaviorist rather than relying on punishment.

Exercise and mental stimulation

Short legs do not mean that a Doxiepoo needs no exercise. Most need regular walks, controlled play, and activities that engage their nose and brain. Useful options include:

  • Age-appropriate walks
  • Short reward-based training sessions
  • Scent games and scatter feeding
  • Food puzzles and snuffle mats
  • Gentle fetch or tug on a non-slip surface

Exercise should match the dog’s age, size, fitness, and body structure. Avoid making repeated high jumps part of the routine. If the dog has a long back, limit jumping from furniture, uncontrolled stair use, and rough activities that involve twisting or impact. A ramp or strategically placed steps may help reduce furniture jumping, but ask your veterinarian what is appropriate for your dog.

A yard is useful but does not replace walks, training, or interaction. A Doxiepoo that barks excessively, chews, paces, or cannot settle may need a better daily routine—not simply more unsupervised access to outdoor space.

Training a Doxiepoo

Doxiepoos can learn quickly, but intelligence is not the same as automatic obedience. A Dachshund-like independent streak may make a dog selective about responding, especially when it has found something more rewarding to do.

  1. Use rewards. Food, play, praise, and access to sniffing can reinforce the behavior you want.
  2. Keep sessions brief. Several sessions of a few minutes are usually more productive than one long lesson.
  3. Make rules consistent. Everyone in the household should use the same cues and boundaries.
  4. Start socialization early. Gradually introduce handling, grooming, visitors, safe dogs, household sounds, and different surfaces.
  5. Train practical skills. Prioritize recall, loose-leash walking, settling on a mat, leave it, cooperative grooming, and safe handling.

Do not punish barking, fear, or resistance harshly. Punishment can increase anxiety and may suppress warning signals without resolving the cause. If toilet training, separation-related behavior, or reactivity is proving difficult, get help early.

Health concerns

A Doxiepoo can inherit health risks associated with either parent. The following conditions are possible concerns, not diagnoses or guaranteed outcomes.

Intervertebral disc disease

Dachshunds and other chondrodystrophoid breeds are commonly affected by intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). The Merck Veterinary Manual reports an estimated lifetime prevalence of about 20% in miniature Dachshunds; that figure applies to miniature Dachshunds, not specifically to Doxiepoos.

A Doxiepoo with Dachshund-like proportions may warrant extra attention to spinal safety and body condition. Seek urgent veterinary care for sudden back or neck pain, reluctance to move, weakness, wobbliness, a dragging limb, inability to stand, or loss of bladder or bowel control.

Weight gain

Extra weight increases the load on a small dog’s joints and may add stress to a vulnerable back. Have your veterinarian assess body condition and feeding needs rather than targeting a generic scale weight. Measure food, account for treats, and reassess portions as activity and age change.

Other inherited risks

Depending on the parent varieties and the individual dog, a veterinarian may also monitor for patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, eye disorders, Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, von Willebrand disease, epilepsy, skin disease, and dental disease. These are risks associated with parent breeds or mixed-breed dogs; they are not confirmed Doxiepoo-specific prevalence figures.

Routine preventive care should include veterinary examinations, vaccination and parasite-control planning, dental care, weight monitoring, and prompt investigation of changes in movement, appetite, vision, skin, or behavior.

Lifespan

There is no scientifically established Doxiepoo lifespan standard. Published estimates commonly fall around 10–15 years, but an individual dog’s lifespan depends on genetics, adult size, body condition, preventive care, accidents, and disease. Treat general mixed-breed estimates as guidance rather than a guarantee.

Choosing a Doxiepoo puppy

Because there is no single Doxiepoo health-testing protocol, evaluate both sides of the cross. A responsible breeder should be willing to show health records and explain the health history of the sire and dam.

  1. Ask for the registered names and actual adult sizes of both parents.
  2. Request documented health testing and certifications, not only a claim that the parents were “vet checked.”
  3. Ask which tests are appropriate for the Dachshund variety and Poodle variety used.
  4. For Poodles, look for relevant hip and eye evaluations and variety-appropriate DNA testing; recommendations vary by Toy, Miniature, and Standard Poodle.
  5. Observe the puppy’s movement, breathing, interaction, recovery from mild surprises, and willingness to be handled.
  6. Ask how the puppies have been exposed to grooming, household life, people, and safe environments.

Health testing lowers some inherited risks but cannot guarantee a disease-free dog. Be cautious if a seller promises a fixed adult size, a guaranteed non-shedding coat, perfect allergy safety, or superior health solely because the dog is a crossbreed.

Home life and daily care

A Doxiepoo can adapt to an apartment or a house when its exercise, toilet routine, training, and companionship needs are met. The practical questions are whether you can provide daily activity, tolerate possible barking, protect the dog from unsafe jumping and stairs, and arrange care if you are away for long periods.

Many dogs do best with a predictable routine: a morning toilet break and walk, brief training and enrichment during the day, and calm interaction in the evening. Do not assume that a small dog is content to be carried or left alone all day. Build alone time gradually and seek help if the dog panics, vocalizes continuously, or damages doors and furniture when separated.

Common Doxiepoo claims to question

Claim More accurate view
“Every Doxiepoo is tiny.” Adult size depends on the Dachshund and Poodle varieties and the individual’s genetics.
“Doxiepoos are hypoallergenic.” Some may shed less, but no dog is reliably allergy-free.
“Crossbreeding guarantees better health.” A Doxiepoo can still inherit disorders from either parent.
“The coat will definitely be curly.” Coats range from smooth to curly and may change as the puppy matures.
“They are easy to train.” They may be clever and also independent, vocal, prey-driven, or stubborn.
“Short legs mean little exercise.” They still need regular, controlled physical and mental activity.

FAQ

Is a Doxiepoo a good family dog?

It can be, provided the individual dog is well socialized and children are taught safe handling. Supervise young children, prevent rough play, and consider the dog’s possible prey drive and back vulnerability.

How big will a Doxiepoo get?

There is no dependable single range. Size depends on whether the parents were miniature, standard, Toy, Miniature, or Standard varieties, along with sex and individual genetics. Ask for the parents’ adult measurements.

Do Doxiepoos shed?

Shedding varies. A smooth Dachshund-like coat may shed differently from a dense, curly Poodle-like coat, and no puppy’s adult coat can be predicted perfectly. A lower-shedding coat is not the same as a hypoallergenic dog.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Doxiepoos prone to back problems?

A Doxiepoo with a long Dachshund-like body may have increased concern for spinal disease, including IVDD. Keep the dog lean, limit repeated jumping and uncontrolled stairs, and seek urgent veterinary care for pain, weakness, wobbling, or paralysis.

The Bottom Line

A Doxiepoo can be a lively, affectionate companion for an owner who is prepared for variable grooming, regular enrichment, possible barking, and consistent reward-based training. The main health consideration is the dog’s structure—especially a long back—along with maintaining a healthy body condition. Choose based on the individual dog, documented health information for both parents, and a realistic plan for daily care, not on promises about a guaranteed size, coat, temperament, or allergy safety.
