Tapanuli Orangutan Behavior: Diet, Daily Activity, and Life in Batang Toru

Field studies at Camp Mayang found that feeding dominated recorded activity and fruit made up most recorded food items in one small sample. Separate studies in Sitandiang and Batang Toru provide additional context, but their different locations and methods mean no single result describes every Tapanuli orangutan.

Tapanuli orangutans (*Pongo tapanuliensis*) eat mainly fruit in one observed Camp Mayang sample, but feeding patterns vary by place and study. Research there also recorded feeding, movement, and use of forest layers; these findings describe small local samples, not every orangutan in Batang Toru.

Researchers study behavior through direct observation, while separate feeding surveys and population models answer different questions. Keeping their locations, dates, sample sizes, and methods clear helps explain what the evidence shows—and what it cannot show.

What do Tapanuli orangutans eat?

In a 2024 Camp Mayang feeding study, fruit made up 68.04% of the recorded food items. The researchers identified nine food-plant taxa: Agathis borneensis, Freycinetia excelsa, Koompassia excelsa, Lithocarpus rassa, Gironniera subaequalis, Cryptocarya crassinervia, Artocarpus maingayi, Spatholobus parviflorus, and Campnosperma squamatum. Picking was the most frequently recorded feeding method, at 68.02%.

Those percentages come from one local study, not a year-round or species-wide diet estimate. A separate 2025 study in Sitandiang, Bulu Mario, reported fruit, leaves, flowers, and bark among the food sources identified through field surveys, interviews, and documentation. Its methods and location differ from direct focal-animal observation at Camp Mayang, so the results should not be combined as though they came from one sample.

How do researchers study daily activity?

The 2024 Camp Mayang feeding study used focal animal sampling and followed four named individuals: Cemara, Beta, Bittang, and Dona. Feeding accounted for 63.21% of the recorded activity in that sample, according to Sitepu, Hutasuhut, and Manalu (2024). This is a finding from those observed individuals and that study, not a universal daily schedule.

A separate Camp Mayang activity study, published in 2025, observed three individuals from October 2023 to March 2024. Researchers used focal animal sampling and binoculars to record activities including feeding, moving, resting, and other behavior. They noted movements such as hanging, bipedal walking, and descending, as well as sitting, squatting, and standing on one or two legs.

In that activity study, forest stratum level 3 was used more often than level 4. These are categories used in the study; the finding does not establish a preferred layer for all Tapanuli orangutans or throughout the year. The available summary does not provide a full time budget for each activity category.

How the studies compare

Study Location and sample Method and finding Limit
Sitepu, Hutasuhut, and Manalu (2024), feeding behavior Camp Mayang; four individuals Focal animal sampling; feeding was 63.21% of recorded activity, fruit 68.04% of recorded food items, and picking 68.02% of feeding methods. A local sample; not a population-wide or year-round estimate.
Tazkiah, Hutasuhut, and Manalu (2025), activity and forest strata Camp Mayang; three individuals observed October 2023–March 2024 Focal sampling and binocular observation; level 3 was used more often than level 4. The available summary does not provide a complete time budget or support generalization across the landscape.
Sinaga and Setyawatiningsih (2025), feeding plants Sitandiang, Bulu Mario Field survey, interviews, and documentation identified fruit, leaves, flowers, and bark as food sources. Different location and methods from direct focal-animal observation.

Where do Tapanuli orangutans live?

Tapanuli orangutans are found in the Batang Toru ecosystem of North Sumatra. Studies at Camp Mayang and Sitandiang examine particular locations within this broader landscape. Their findings should be read in the context of each study’s site, dates, sample, and method rather than treated as interchangeable descriptions of the entire population.

How many Tapanuli orangutans are there?

A 2026 population assessment based on surveys conducted from 2021 to 2023 estimated 716 Tapanuli orangutans across three metapopulations, with a 95% confidence interval of 645–792, according to Global Ecology and Conservation (2026). This is a model-based estimate, not a count of every individual.

A different study by Kuswanda and colleagues, published in 2021, recorded 32 distinct individuals during four years of direct observation: 27 adults or subadults and five infants or juveniles. It reported an adult male-to-female sex ratio of 1:0.83 and a population growth rate estimate of 0.051 per year. These figures describe that study and its model; they should not be combined with the 2026 estimate as a population trend without a direct comparison of methods.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell us

The Camp Mayang behavior studies offer concrete observations, but each involved only a few individuals. The Sitandiang feeding study provides evidence from a second location using different methods. Population studies and estimates have still different coverage and designs. Together, they provide useful context, but they do not establish one universal diet, activity budget, or movement pattern for the species.

For field observation, binoculars were used in the Camp Mayang activity study. That makes them a potentially useful optional tool for wildlife watching, not a requirement for visitors or evidence in support of a particular brand or model.

FAQ

What is the main food of Tapanuli orangutans?

Fruit made up 68.04% of recorded food items in the 2024 Camp Mayang feeding study. A separate study in Sitandiang also identified leaves, flowers, and bark among food sources. The findings differ by study, location, and method, so fruit should not be treated as the only food or as a fixed proportion year-round.

How active are Tapanuli orangutans during the day?

Feeding accounted for 63.21% of recorded activity in the four-individual Camp Mayang feeding study published in 2024. A separate activity study observed three individuals and categorized feeding, movement, resting, and other behavior, but the available summary does not give a complete time budget. Neither result is a universal daily schedule.

Where do Tapanuli orangutans live?

They live in the Batang Toru ecosystem in North Sumatra. Individual studies cover particular sites there, such as Camp Mayang and Sitandiang, and should not automatically be generalized to the whole landscape.

How many Tapanuli orangutans are estimated to remain?

A 2026 assessment based on 2021–2023 surveys estimated 716 individuals across three metapopulations, with a 95% confidence interval of 645–792. It is a model-based estimate, not a direct count of every orangutan.

Do Tapanuli orangutans mainly use one forest layer?

In the 2025 Camp Mayang activity study, the observed individuals used forest stratum level 3 more often than level 4. The result applies to that sample and does not establish a species-wide preference.
